강원도 북중부 산나물 민간지식의 전승과 재구성 －상품화와 그 영향을 중심으로－ (The Transmission and Reconstruction of Foraged Plant Knowledge in North-Central Gangwon －Commercialization and Its Impact－)

초록

이 연구는 강원도 평창군 진부면 소재 2개 자연마을의 산나물 관련 민간지식의 구체적인 내용과 전승양상을 검토하고, 민간지식이 소비문화, 상품화의 영향 속에서 어떻게 재구성되는지 살펴본다. 조사지에서 산나물과 관련한 민간지식은 크게 산나물을 채취하는 지역주민들의 지식과 이들로부터 산나물을 구입해 판매하는 상인들의 지식으로 구성되어 있다. 각각의 지식은 서로 다른 경로를 통해 습득되었는데, 전자의 경우 실제 채취현장에 동행하는 방식으로 전승되었다면, 후자는 서적 등을 통해 스스로 학습하는 방식을 거쳤다. 민간지식 연구에서 전승을 통한 학습이 강조되면서, 역사성, 공동체성이 민간지식의 주요한 속성으로 규정되어 온 것이 사실이나, 조사지의 산나물 채취사례는 민간지식의 습득이 개별자의 상이한 체험을 토대로 이루어지는 만큼 개별성이 발현되는 측면에 주목한다.
계속해서 이 연구는 도시 소비문화와 상품화가 기존의 산나물 채취 및 가공과 관련한 민간지식에 미친 영향을 탐색한다. 조사지에서 산나물 지식의 구체적 내용은 산나물의 생장시기와 채취적기, 서식지와 관련한 생물학적 지식과 그에 적합한 채취방법 내지 기술을 적용하는 방법으로 구성되어 있다. 1970년대 중후반 조사지의 사회경제적 맥락에 일어난 변화는 산나물을 상품으로 재규정하는 계기가 되었다. 이로써 산나물 채취와 가공방식에 관한 기존의 지식이 외부의 소비수요에 맞추어 분화되었을 뿐 아니라, 지역민들이 산나물을 경제적 가치를 기준으로 우열을 평가해 위계적으로 재구성하는 등 민간지식에서도 변화가 나타났다.
이 연구는 민간지식이 지역이나 마을의 경계를 넘어, 지역민들의 일상을 규정해 온 상품경제와 같은 거시적 구조와의 관계 속에서 새로운 범주를 만들어 내기도 하고, 기존의 지식들을 조정하기도 하면서 변화하는 양상을 조명한다. 이를 통해 지역민들이 민간지식을 실천하는 주체로서 기존 지식을 전승하고 재구성해 나가는 과정을 포착하고자 한다. 또한, 민간지식의 공동체성이나 토착성뿐만 아니라 개별성, 그리고 사회경제적 맥락에 따른 유동성에 대해서도 논의가 이루어질 필요가 있음을 제안한다.

영어초록

This study examines the specific content and transmission patterns of traditional knowledge related to wild edible plants in natural villages in the northern central region of Gangwon Province, and explores how this knowledge is reconstructed within the influences of consumer culture and commodification. The traditional knowledge related to wild edible plants in the research area is largely composed of the knowledge of local residents who gather these plants and the knowledge of merchants who purchase and sell them. Each type of knowledge is acquired through different pathways; in the former case, it is transmitted by accompanying gatherers in the field, while in the latter, it is learned independently through books and other resources. While the emphasis on learning through transmission in traditional knowledge research has led to the characterization of historical and communal aspects as key attributes of such knowledge, the case of wild edible plant gathering in the research area highlights the individuality that emerges from the diverse experiences of individuals in acquiring this knowledge.
Furthermore, this study explores the impact of urban consumer culture and commodification on existing traditional knowledge related to the gathering and processing of wild edible plants. The specific content of knowledge about wild edible plants in the research area includes biological knowledge related to the growth periods and optimal gathering times, habitats, and the appropriate methods or techniques for gathering them. Changes in the socio-economic context of the research area in the mid to late 1970s provided an opportunity to redefine wild edible plants as commodities. As a result, existing knowledge about gathering and processing these plants was not only differentiated to meet external consumer demands but also underwent changes as local residents began to evaluate and hierarchically reconstruct wild edible plants based on their economic value.
This study sheds light on how traditional knowledge transcends the boundaries of regions or villages, creating new categories in relation to macro structures such as the commodity economy that has defined the daily lives of local residents, while also adjusting existing knowledge. Through this, it aims to capture the process by which local residents, as practitioners of traditional knowledge, transmit and reconstruct existing knowledge. Additionally, it suggests that there is a need for discussion regarding not only the communal and indigenous aspects of traditional knowledge but also its individuality and fluidity in relation to socio-economic contexts.
