해남 대흥사 북미륵암 마애불상 도상에 보이는 중기밀교적 특징 (Features of the Middle Esoteric Buddhism Shown in the Icon of the Rock-carved Buddha Statue at Bugmireugam Hermitage in Daeheungsa Temple of Haenam)

초록

海南 大興寺 北彌勒庵 마애불상은 전라남도 해남군 삼산면에 위치한 두륜산 정상에 조성된 마애불로 8세기 촉지인 불좌상에서 이어져 오는 전통적인 표현을 유지하면서도 본존불상 광배 밖의 넓은 공간에 좌우로 4구의 보살상이 배치되는 독특한 구도를 보인다. 이에 이러한 도상의 배경이나 의미에 대해 집중적으로 밝혀보고자 하였다.
해남 대흥사 북미륵암 마애불상의 전체적인 조형적 특징을 분석하여 살펴본 결과, 구도면에서는 새로운 중기밀교상의 요소를 반영하고 있었으나 그 위에 실제 본존상이나 보살상의 표현에서는 앞 시기의 전통적 특징들이 이어지는 것으로 파악되었다.
북미륵암 마애불상에서 가장 주목되는 것은 촉지인 본존상을 중심으로 광배 밖에 커다란 형태로 네 구의 공양보살상이 배치된 구도이다. 네 구의 공양보살상의 배치된 구도는 중기밀교상의 요소를 반영한 것으로 생각되는데 동인도 자이푸르 아촉불상과 중국 법문사 지궁에서 발견된 鎏金四十五尊造像盝頂銀函의 아촉불면과 비교된다. 이를 고찰을 통해 중기밀교상의 요소가 북미륵암상의 구도에 영향을 준 것으로 판단되었다. 또한 본존불상의 대좌에서도 일부 중기밀교상의 영향을 살펴볼 수 있었다.
그러나 본존불상 자체의 양식은 신라 하대의 불상들과 공통적인 특징을 보였는데 착의법, 수인, 광배의 표현에서 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 북미륵암 마애불상의 조성시기는 양식비교를 통해서도 통일신라기를 넘지 않은 것으로 판단되었다.
북미륵암 마애불상 조성의 직접적인 역사적 배경은 현재로서는 확인할 수 있는 자료가 없지만, 전반적으로 신라 하대 비로자나불상들에 보이는 밀교상의 영향 등과 비교하여 중기밀교상의 영향이 확대되는 과정 속에서 대흥사 북미륵암 마애불상도 조성된 것으로 보았다. 그러나 이시기 다른 촉지인 불좌상에서는 그러한 예를 찾아보기 힘들어서 대흥사 북미륵암 마애불상은 당시 매우 독특한 예라고 생각된다. 이상의 고찰을 통해서 볼때 중기밀교가 통일신라시대에 종파로서 성립되지는 않았지만 꾸준히 당시 불교조각의 조성에 많은 영향을 미치고 있음을 시사한다고 생각된다.

영어초록

The Rock-carved Buddha Statue at Bugmireugam Hermitage(北彌勒庵) in Daeheungsa Temple(大興寺) of Haenam(海南) is a rock-carved Buddha constructed on the top of the Duryunsan Mountain located in Samsan-myeon, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do Province. While maintaining the traditional expression continued from the seated Buddha statues with Bhumisparsha mudra of the 8th century, this statue shows a distinctive composition where four Bodhisattva images are arranged in the left and right sides of the large space outside the halo of the principal Buddha. Thus, this study aimed to intensively reveal the background or the meaning of this icon.
As a result of analyzing the overall figurative features of the Rock-carved Buddha Statue at Bugmireugam Hermitage in Daeheungsa Temple of Haenam, it reflected the factors of the new Middle Esoteric Buddhism in the composition aspect, but the expression of the actual principal image and the Bodhisattva images on top of that was found to be continuing the traditional features of the previous period.
What is most noticeable from the Rock-carved Buddha Statue at Bugmireugam Hermitage is the composition where four offering Bodhisattva images are displayed in a large form outside the halo centering on the principal Buddha with Bhumisparsha-mudra. The composition arranged with the four offering Bodhisattva images is deemed to have reflected the factors of the Middle Esoteric Buddhism's images and is comparable to the East India's Jaipur Akshobhya Statue and the Akshobhya-carved sides of “The Silver Chest Carved with 45 Sacred Images(鎏金四十五尊造像盝頂銀函)” that was discovered in the underground chamber of Famen Temple(法門寺), China. Through this contemplation, it was suggested that the factors of the Middle Esoteric Buddhism influenced the composition of the statue at Bugmireugam Hermitage. Moreover, the influence of Middle Esoteric Buddhism was also partly examinable on the pedestal of the principal Buddha statue.
However, the style of the principal Buddha statue itself showed common features of the Buddha statues from the late Silla Dynasty, and these could be confirmed in the expression of the dress mode, hand seal, and halo. Therefore, it was also suggested through the style comparison that the construction period of the Rock-carved Buddha Statue at Bugmireugam Hermitage does not go beyond the Unified Silla period.
Although there is no identifiable material on the direct background of the construction of the Rock-carved Buddha Statue at Bugmireugam Hermitage, the overall comparison with the influence of the Esoteric Buddhism portrayed in the Vairocana Buddha Statues(毘盧遮那佛像) of the late Silla Dynasty, etc. signifies that the Rock-carved Buddha Statue at Bugmireugam Hermitage in Daeheungsa Temple was constructed in the process of the expanding influence of the Middle Esoteric Buddhism as well. However, as such examples are difficult to find in other seated Buddha statues with Bhumisparsha-mudra of this period, the Rock-carved Buddha Statue at Bugmireugam Hermitage in Daeheungsa Temple is considered to be an extremely unique case of the time. The above contemplation implies that while the Middle Esoteric Buddhism was not established as a religious sect in the Unified Silla Dynasty, it had consistently yielded great influence on the construction of Buddhist statues of those days.
