태평양전쟁기 북마리아나 지역 한인의 전쟁동원과 포로수용소 체험 (A Study on the War Mobilization and POW Camp Experience of Korean Residents in Northern Mariana Islands during the Pacific War)

초록

본고에서는 통계자료와 명부, 증언 등을 근거로 하여 태평양전쟁 시기 사이판, 티니안 등 북마리아나 지역으로 동원되었던 한인들의 강제동원현황, 전쟁피해 및 귀환 등을 규명하여 보고자 하였다.
1939년 이후 북마리아나 지역 한인의 인구는 지속적으로 증가하는데, 같은 시기 일본인 증가세를 넘어설 정도였다. 한인 노무자 동원은 태평양전쟁 발발을 전후한 시기에도 지속되었는데, 1941년 전라남도 지역에서 모집된 노무자들의 명부를 보면 그 대강을 엿볼 수 있다.
1944년 들어서며 북마리아나 지역의 긴장이 더욱 고조되자 일본군은군사시설 구축을 서두르기 시작하였다. 이에 따라 한인들도 현지 주둔군의 통제를 받아 농장노동 이외에 군 관련 노동에도 동원되기 시작하였다.
군속 동원도 본격화하여 해군군속의 경우 약 2,000명의 한인이 동원된 사실이 확인된다. 태평양전쟁 당시 남양군도 거주 한인들의 처지는 전황과 점령군에 따라 크게 엇갈렸다. 사이판과 티니안은 미군점령지로 민간인 포로수용소가 설치되었다. 수용소는 일본인과 분리되어 있었고 미군은 한인들을 구별하여 대우하였다. 수용소 내 생활은 자치제로 운영되었다. 군정부의 지시를 받아 한국계 미국인 통역관이 매일 출입하며 감독하였다. 수용소의 한인들은 비교적 자유로운 생활을 한 것으로 보인다.
북마리아나 지역의 한인들은 미주 동포들과 일정한 연계를 가졌던 것으로 확인된다. 미주 동포들은 북마리아나 지역의 한인들에게 독립정신을 불어넣는데 공을 들었던 것으로 보인다.
북마리아나 지역의 한인들은 1946년 1월 중순경부터 귀환하기 시작하였다. 미군이 제공한 수송선에 승선하여 국내로 들어온 것이었다. 미군은 기본적으로 북마리아나 지역에서 원주인 이외의 외국인을 전원 퇴거하도록 방침을 세웠다. 그러나 최종적으로는 미군점령 이전에 이미 현지인과 결혼하여 가정을 이루고 살고 있었던 사람들에 대해서는 잔류가 허용되었다.

Based on statistical data, rosters, and testimonies, this paper attempted to investigate the current status of forced mobilization, war damage, and return of Koreans who were mobilized to the Northern Mariana Islands such as Saipan and Tinian during the Pacific War.
Since 1939, the population of Koreans in the Northern Mariana Islands has continued to increase, more than the Japanese during the same period.
The mobilization of Korean workers continued even before and after the outbreak of the Pacific War, and such a situation can be seen through the list of workers recruited in Jeollanam-do in 1941.
In 1944, as tensions in the Northern Mariana Islands intensified, the Japanese military began to rush to build military facilities. Accordingly, Koreans also began to be mobilized for the construction of military facilities under the control of local troops. The mobilization of military personnel also began in earnest, and it was confirmed that about 2,000 Koreans were mobilized for naval military personnel.
During the Pacific War, the situation of Koreans living in the South Sea Islands differed greatly depending on the situation and occupation forces.
Saipan and Tinian were occupied by the U.S. military, and civilian prisoner of war camps were established. The camps were separated from the Japanese, and the U.S. military treated Koreans separately. Life in the camps was operated on a self-governing basis. Under the direction of the military government, Korean-American interpreters entered and supervised every day. It seems that Koreans in the camps lived relatively free lives.
It is confirmed that Koreans in the Northern Mariana Islands had a certain connection with their American compatriots. American compatriots seem to have worked hard to inspire the spirit of independence to Koreans in the Northern Mariana Islands.
Koreans in the Northern Mariana Islands began to return to Korea in mid-January 1946. They entered Korea aboard a transport ship provided by the US military. The US military originally planned to evict all foreigners other than natives from the Northern Mariana Islands. However, in the end, those who had already married locals and lived in a family before the US occupation were allowed to remain.
