屛溪 尹鳳九 心論의 특징과 그 의미 (The Characteristic and Significance of Byeong-Gye Yun Bong-Gu's the Theory of Mind)

초록

윤봉구를 비롯한 호론 학자들은 人物性異論, 未發有氣質論, 聖凡心異論 등을 통해 氣의 영역을 중시하고 강조함으로써 개체 간의 차이와 구별을 부각시켰다. 이와 같은 호론의 입장에는 君子․小人, 華․夷의 엄격한 구분을 통해 명분에 합당한 도덕성의 提高와 대외의식의 확립을 기하고자 하는 현실적 지향이 담겨있었다. 이 글에서는 윤봉구의 심론을 검토함으로써 차이와 구별을 강조하는 그의 의식이 심론을 통해 선명히 나타나고 있음을 확인하였다. 그는 심에서 기의 영역에 주목하여 ‘心是氣’를 강조하였다. 기에는 淸濁이 존재하므로 서로 다른 기를 품부한 성인과 범인의 심은 차이가 날 수밖에 없다. 윤봉구는 기질과 연관된 차원에서 인간의 본심을 논의하였기 때문에 기의 精爽에도 分數가 있고 심의 고유한 능력인 虛靈함에도 분수가 있다고 보았다. 존재 간의 차이가 근원에서부터 예비되어 있음을 강조하였던 것이다. 다만 미발일 때의 기질은 성범을 막론하고 동일하다고 파악한다. 물론 범인에게 이런 상태가 이루어지는 것은 대단히 어려운 일이지만 이론적으로는 가능한 일이다. 미발은 기가 전혀 움직이지 않은 상태이다. 이때에도 심이 관여하기에 당연히 기질은 존재하지만 거기에 악의 가능성은 없다. 이 점은 미발시의 기질에는 선악의 가능성이 모두 존재한다고 말한 한원진과 다른 의견이다.
특히 윤봉구는 심의 활화성(活化性)을 빈번하게 언급하고 강조함으로써 심의 자정능력을 드러내었다. 심의 자정능력인 활화성은 성범의 구분이 없이 누구나 보편적으로 갖고 있는 능력이다. 그러니 누구라도 기질변화의 욕구를 지니기만 한다면 그것이 현실화될 수 있는 것이다. 따라서 그가 심의 자정능력을 강조했던 이면에는 자신이 처한 사회가 요구하는 도덕성 제고의 문제와 적극적으로 대응하여 개인의 도덕성 각성을 촉구하는 기대와 그 가능 근거를 동시에 마련하고자 하는 의식이 반영되어 있다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The scholars of the school of Ho, Yun Bong-Gu included, brought out the difference and distinction among individuals into relief by attaching great importance to and giving emphasis to the material force through emphasizing the difference between humans and things in the nature, existence of the physical nature in the unaroused mind, and distinction of the mind of sages and ordinary people. This standpoint of the school of Ho contained the real intention improving the morality suitable for the moral justification and establishing the international awareness by making a sharp distinction between the superior man and mean man, and between the center and the periphery. In this paper, I certified that Yun Bong-Gu stressed the difference and distinction through his theory of mind. He emphasized 'the mind is alike material force' by paying attention to the part of the latter on the former. Because there are the purity and impurity in the material force, there is the necessary difference between the mind of sages and ordinary people consisting of the different material force. Yun Bong-Gu thought that there are many differences on the spirit of material force and on the perception which is ability of the mind because he regarded the human mind as having relation to the physical nature. In other words, he stressed the difference among individuals which exists essentially. He thought of, however, physical nature in the unaroused mind as the sameness regardless of sages or ordinary people. Although it is impossible for ordinary people to maintain the same situation to sages, it is possible theoretically. There is no an activity of the material force in the unaroused mind. Though there is the physical nature necessarily in the unaroused mind because of the participation of the mind, there is no chance for an evil to exist. It is different from Han Won-Jins ideas that it is possible for virtue and vice both to exist in the physical nature when the mind has not arisen.
Yun Bong-Gu showed the vitality of the mind. Anyone regardless of a sage or ordinary person has it generally. As long as anyone wants to change his physical nature, he is able to do it. Consequently, more important reasons for him to emphasize 'the vitality of the mind' is both to stimulate most people to be conscious of their morality required in their society and to set up the basis for it.
