초록

본고는 김기덕 감독의 영화 「봄 여름 가을 겨울 그리고 봄」을 중심으로 이 영화의 서사를 구축하는 불교적 상상력과 그 구현 방식으로서의 은유를 고찰한 논문이다. 본 연구는 은유의 다양한 특성을 전제로 영화 속에 산포한 은유의 의미를 파악하고 그것을 통해 감독의 의도가 어떻게 관객에게 수용되는가와 같은 질문에 대한 해답을 찾고자 한다. 이것은 일차적으로는 시와 영화의 상호텍스트성에 대한 한 해명을 제시할 수 있을 것이며, 나아가 영화와 시의 소통 방식에 대한 이해를 높일 수 있으리라 기대한다.
삶에 대한 근원적 통찰을 보여준 「봄 여름 가을 겨울 그리고 봄」은 대사에 의존하여 서사를 전개하기보다는 불교적 소재를 은유적으로 활용하는 서사전달 방식을 택하고 있다. 이것은 영화와 시의 친연성을 고려하게 하는 근거가 된다. 주지하는 바와 같이 시는 압축된 이미지를 제시하여 시적 의미와 긴장을 형성한다. 이 영화 또한 이미지의 조합을 통해 긴장을 조성하고 서사를 전개한다. 김기덕의 「봄 여름 가을 겨울 그리고 봄」을 분석하는 과정을 통해 이 영화가 수용한 은유의 의미를 몇 가지로 정리할 수 있다.
첫째, 계절의 변화와 맞물리는 인간의 성장이다. 인물의 성장을 직ㆍ간접적인 묘사를 통해 제시하는 문자텍스트와 달리 영화는 시각적 이미지를 동원한 보여주기를 통해 인물의 성장을 제시한다. 압축된 시간과 인물의 성장에 따른 사건의 전개과정에서 차용된 다양한 은유적 몽따주는 영화의 서사가 예측 가능하다는 한계에도 불구하고 미숙한 인간의 성장담과 고통을 통해 얻는 깨달음, 즉 진리에의 도달이라는 영화적 목적을 충실히 수행한다.
둘째, 공간과 소재가 지니는 은유적 의미이다. 개구리, 물고기, 뱀, 부유하는 절과 그 절을 둘러싼 물, 산문과 절 사이를 오가는 나룻배 등은 각각 중요한 시적 은유로 기능한다. 특히 물로 인하여 단절된 절은 속세와의 단절을 시각적으로 보여준다. 속세와 절을 오가는 나룻배는 이 이질적인 두 공간의 매개체가 된다. 영화가 전개되는 동안 나룻배는 절 안의 진리를 속세로 퍼 나르는 역할보다 속세의 근심과 우환을 절 안으로 끌고 들어오는 은유적 역할에 충실하다.
셋째, 은폐된 이름, 즉 무명(無名)이 지니는 은유적 의미이다. 은폐된 이름은 본질을 드러내지 못한다. 영화는 그 어느 곳에서도 호명을 통한 관계 규정의 욕망을 드러내지 않는다. 그것은 본질이 은폐된 현대인을 환유할 수도 있고 또는 본질을 드러내는 것에 대한 현대인의 병적 두려움이 반영되었기 때문일 수도 있다. 중요한 것은 구원에 이르고자 하는 모든 이의 이름이 소거되었다는 점이다. 따라서 영화의 인물은 특정인으로 한정되는 것이 아니라 영화를 바라보는 모든 관객으로 확장되며 이로써 영화적 메시지는 공감을 형성하게 된다.

영어초록

This is the paper to study the Buddhist imagination building the narration of the movie and the metaphor as the way of realizing it focused on the Kim Ki―duk’s movie, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring. In this study I try to comprehend the meanings of metaphors dispersed in the movie based on the various characteristics of metaphor and then find the answer to the question like how the director’s intention was accepted to the audience through it. This would give an explanation regarding the text mutuality between the poem and the movie initially. Furthermore, it is expected that the ways of communication between the movie and the poem would be better understood.
The movie Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring that showed the fundamental insight for life chooses the way of delivering the story using the Buddhist materials metaphorically rather than unfolding the story depending on the lines. This provides a basis for considering the close relationship between the movie and the poem. As we all know, the poem proposes a compressed image and forms its poetic meaning and tension. This movie also provokes the tension and unfolds the story through the combination of images. Through the process of analyzing the Kim’s movie, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring we could summarize a few meanings of metaphors this movie adopted as following.
The first metaphor is the human growth in line with the changes of seasons. Unlike the written text suggesting the character’s growth through direct and indirect description, the movie exposes the growth of the character through showing it using visual images. Despite the limitation that the narration of the movie is predictable, a variety of metaphoric montages, adapted in the development of events according to the compressed period and the character’s growth, faithfully carry out the objective of the movie, the growth story of an immature man and the enlightenment through sufferings, that is to say, reaching for the truth.
The second is the metaphoric meaning of the space and material. The frog, the fish, the snake, the floating temple, the water surrounding the temple, the ferry boat traveling to and from the temple and the temple gate, etc. function as poetic metaphors. In particular, the temple disconnected due to the water visually suggests the disconnection from the secular world. The ferry boat coming and going between the temple and the secular world becomes a medium of the two disparate spaces. Throughout the movie the ferry boat is faithful to the role that brings worry and troubles into the temple rather than taking out the truth in the temple to the mundane world.
The third is the metaphoric meaning of the concealed name, that is, Nameless. The concealed name cannot reveal the true nature. The movie does not reveal the desire of defining the relationships through calling the characters’ names at any moment. It could be the metonymy of the moderns whose true nature is concealed or the moderns’ morbid fear of the revealment the true nature could be reflected. What matters is that the names of all the people that tried to reach the redemption were eliminated. Therefore, the movie character is not limited to a specific person but expanded to all the audience watching the movie. The message of the movie hereby arouses the sympathy.
