초록

타인의 문화를 이해한다는 것은 그 문화를 바라보는 학자에 눈에 의해서 구성된 타인의 문화의 총체적 시스템이 아니라 타인을 이해하는 과정에 나타난 자기 이해이고 형성의 과정이다. 마찬가지로, 예배학자가 예배를 이해하는 것은 연구대상이 되는 공동체의 이해를 통해 자기 자신을 이해하고 형성하는 과정이라고 볼 수 있다. 종교 예전을 연구하는 학자는 주관적인 자신의 종교적 신념과 선이해 없이 또는 참여자들에 대한 이해와 통찰 없이 예전 자체만을 연구하기 어렵다. 따라서 예전을 연구한다는 것은 상당히 다층적인 분석과 묘사를 필요로 한다. 이글은 폴 리꾀르의“의심의 해석학”을 통해 한국개신교 예배의 퍼포먼스가 어떤 의미를 생산해내고 그 결과적인 효과가 어떠한지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이러한 분석은 예배가 어떤 역동성을 통해 회중에게 영향을 미치고 특정인의 관점이 재생산되고 확장되는지를 보여줄 것이다. 종교의 상징과 이미지는 예배의 참여자로 하여금 감정을 유발하고 영향을 주기에 종종 오용된다. 예배는 스스로 비판적 성찰의 기능을 상실하면 특정한 사회적 문화적 정치적 가치를 전파하는 수단이 될 수 있다. 예배 경험을 비판적으로 바라볼 때, 사회적 정치적 의미와 영향이 드러나고 예배 경험을 통해 진정 경험되어야 할 진리가 감추어지지 않게 될 것이다.

영어초록

Ethnographic writing is a process of “self-fashioning,” since the very act of writing about others is the construction of selves and others through specific discursive practice. In the same way that the insider and the ethnographer (outsider) should co-work discursively to observe the cultural dynamic, liturgical scholars should allow insiders (participants) to speak for themselves about what really happens in worship. It is critically important for liturgical scholars to observe how participants themselves understand and describe their experience. We can observe, very often, our interpretations of religious rituals are incorporated into socio-cultural interest through images and symbols of religious tradition. This is why we need critical and empirical investigations, whenever we deal with religious symbols and images which may invoke, affect, and even manipulate its participants in ritual performance. In his book. Hermeneutics and The Human Sciences, Paul Ricoeur observes religious experience with a “the hermeneutic of suspicion.” Ricoeur understands “interpretation” not as a restoration of meaning but as an “exercise of suspicion.” If we apply Ricoeur’s hermeneutic of suspicion to Christian worship, we might more clearly see how participants’ emotional intensity and interests are magnified by ritual performance. We need to be critical about how the liturgy itself operates as a medium of socialization: that is, critical reflection upon the liturgy itself. The liturgy could be conceived as a form of consciousness-raising, hence as an exercise in critical praxis. Liturgy allows biased social values to flourish when it loses its critical self-reflection, when the ecclesiastical system and discipline in liturgy continues to “socialize” its congregation in a construct which permits things to remain as they are. This is why we need examine unconscious motives, assumptions, prejudices and judgments, turning our attention to the vested interests, political implications, inherent contradictions, or dissonant values by bringing ethical, moral or aesthetic standards to bear upon them to render overt the way rites negotiate and utilize power. We need to approach the ritual experience critically and suspiciously in order that its social effects and implications may be exposed, and so that our own convictions do not mask the truth which is supposed to be conveyed in worship experience.
