‘결혼(부부) 서사’로 읽어보는 <숙영낭자전>의 의미 (Meaning of Read through ‘Marriage(Couple) Narration’)

초록

<숙영낭자전>은 대표적인 애정소설로 알려져 있다. 그러나 본 논문은 <숙영낭자전>을 ‘애정서사’라기 보다 ‘결혼(부부) 서사’로 보기를 제안한다. <숙영낭자전>이 두 남녀 주인공의 ‘애정 실현담’이라기보다 불완전한 남녀가 만나 불완전한 가정을 이루다 시련을 거친 후 비로서 완전한 가정을 이루는 이야기이기 때문이다. 실제로 이 서사는 ‘두 남녀의 만남 및 결연-불완전한 결혼 생활-완전한 부부관계 획득 및 승천’의 서사 구조를 가지며, 불완전한 인간으로서의 ‘불완전성’을 벗고 ‘완전한 부부’로 성숙하는 통과 제의적 성향을 강하게 지니고 있는 작품이다. 이에 본 논문은 <숙영낭자전>을 ‘결혼(부부) 서사’로 보고, 이렇게 보는 이유가 무엇인지, 또 결혼(부부) 서사로 보았을 때 이 작품이 주는 문학적, 사회적 의미는 어떻게 규명될 수 있을지 살펴보고자 하였다.
우선 서사의 첫 시작 단계라고 할 수 있는 ‘만남과 결연’의 단계에서 주요한 특징은 두 주인공들의 미성숙함, 즉 '불완전성'이 부각되고 있다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 <숙영낭자전>의 주인공이 기존의 전형적인 애정소설 주인공과는 질적으로 다름을 명확히 하는 단계이기도 하다. 두 번째 단계는 선군의 과거 시험 거부, 간통 음모, 숙영의 자살 등 ‘사건’ 중심의 서사들이 펼쳐진다. 그러나 이 일련의 사건은 그들의 불완전한 결혼생활을 보여주는 표상이자, 주인공들의 불완전성이 결혼 생활에서 얼마나 심각한 위기를 낳게 하는지 보여주는 대목이다. 이런 이유로 선군과 숙영은 ‘통과의례’ 과정을 거치게 된다. 선군의 ‘과거 시험’과 숙영의 ‘간통 음모’가 바로 그것이다. 이 과정을 통해 주인공들은 자신들의 불완전성을 벗어 낸다. 마지막 단계에서는 두 주인공의 변화를 통해 그들이 행복한 결혼생활로 안착했음을 확인시켜준다. 이는 두 주인공이 통과의례를 성공리에 끝냈음을 보여주는 것으로서, 두 사람의 변화를 통해 행복한 결혼생활을 위해 부부에게 필요한 것이 무엇인지, 그리고 이상적 결혼관은 어떤 것인지를 분명히 제시해 준다.

영어초록

This study presents <Sunyoungnangjajeon> as an example of ‘marriage(couple) narration.’ In analysing the entire frame of <Sukyoungnangjajeon>according to paragraphs, this story was composed of as follows: ‘encounter of two people and their marriage(①~④)-incomplete marriage life(⑤~⑧) and achievement of complete marital relations(⑨~⑭).’ It means that this story describes a couple who makes a complete family via fallibility. This study investigated main events in each step, what characteristics there are in each event and what meaning it has. In addition, why the story is considered as a narration of marriage rather than love story was speculated on. The results are summarized as follows: In the step of ‘encounter of man and woman and their marriage' as a beginning of narration, immaturity, an important characteristic of the heroes, is emphasized. It is different from heroes of existing love stories. They are typical wit and beauty who are mature in personality.
In the development of narration, this story gives a focus on the process of realization of love for which heroes risk their life to maintain their love while they are impatient to concentrate on love.
However, <Sukyoungnangjajeon> is different. It closes up the nature of heroes while it gives more focus on imperfection and immaturity of heroes rather than the process beautiful love is achieved. In this respect, this story is different from the beginning of existing love stories.
In the second step, important events are developed : Sungun's refusal of national examination, conspiracy of adultery and Sukyoung's suicide.
However, such events have meaning in that they show imperfect marriage life. It is the step to mention validity of initiation to overcome this imperfection.
Also, it is important that the love of the married couple is broken in this step.
In <Sukyoungnangjajeon>, the love of the heroes is broken by their internal state, imperfection rather than external force while in existing ‘love stories’ the love of man and woman who fall in love is broken by external force.
The final step mentions changes of the heroes and shows their marriage life is happy. It means that two heroes complete initiation successfully and the change in the heroes shows what the couple needs for happy marriage life. In this respect, <Sukyoungnangjajeon> is a story which describes the couple succeeds in initiation to overcome imperfect marriage life and is born again as a mature and complete couple. It also shows what attitude on ideal marriage are at that time, which is a true meaning of this story.
