초록

지난 40여 년간 국가의 재정 지원으로 번역된 한문고전은 난해하고 어렵다는 평가를 받아왔다. 특히 최근에 이루어진 고전번역평가에서는 소통성의 문제가 지적되었다. 평가자들은 한문 고전 번역이 한문투[축자역]의 번역과 생경한 한자어의 사용으로 인해 소통이 저해되었다고 언급하면서, 이런 따위의 문장을 비문이라고 표현하였다.
일반적인 의미의 비문은 비문법적인 문장을 말한다. 다시 말해서 의미나 맥락을 정확하게 전달하는데 문법적으로 일정한 장애를 가진 문장이다. 그러나 한문고전의 번역에 있어서 비문은 좀 더 넓은 의미로 쓰이고 있다. 즉 축자역으로 인한 비문법적인 문장은 물론, 생경한 한자어의 사용을 모두 비문에 포함시키고 있다.
번역이란 기본적으로 서로 다른 두 개의 언어 사이에 의미의 등가성을 확보하는 행위이다. 여기서 서로 다른 두 개의 언어란 어휘와 문법구조가 전혀 다른 것을 의미한다. 따라서 일반적으로 번역 행위 내에서 출발언어의 어휘나 문장 구조가 그대로 도착어휘로 옮겨지는 일은 별로 없다. 하지만 한문번역은 그런 행위가 빈번하며, 이것이 비문을 발생시키는 근본 요인이다. 이는 한문이 가지는 역사적 특수성에 기인한다.
한문은 전통시대 우리의 공식 문어였다. 갑오경장으로 한문은 공식 문어로서 지위를 잃었다. 뿐만 아니라, 미군정 이후 한문은 교육에서도 발을 붙이지 못하였다. 한문고전번역은 이런 배경 속에서 시작되었다. 당시 원로 학자들은 전통시대 공식 문어로 쓰여진 많은 한문고전적을 조속히 번역하여 한글화해야 한다는 역사적 책무의식을 가지게 되었다. 그러나 한문교육의 단절로 번역에 종사할 인력은 부족할 수밖에 없었다. 결과적으로 제도권 밖에서 한학을 수학한 한학세대가 고전번역에 중추적 역할을 담당하게 된 것이다.
한학세대는 제도권의 교육에서 유리된 채 자신의 노력에 의하여 한문을 수학하였다. 한학세대의 번역에 있어서 한문의 구문이나 어휘가 번역문내에서 용해되지 못하고 쓰여진 것은 어찌 보면 당연한 일이다. 왜냐하면 그들의 소통언어가 한문이기 때문이다. 그들은 번역을 주도하였고, 번역과정을 관리하였으며, 또 새로운 번역인력을 양성하는 임무도 수행하였다. 한문의 퇴장과 한문 교육의 퇴장으로 인한 결과였다. 따라서 한학세대가 아니었다면 한문고전의 번역은 지금과 같은 성과를 갖지 못했을 것이다. 비문의 발생은 바로 이런 역사적 상황 속에서 구조화되었다.
이점이 바로 비문의 발생을 단순히 역자 개개인의 역량이나 문제로 치부해서는 안되는 까닭이다. 그것은 우리의 한문고전번역의 발전과정 속에서 필연적으로 겪어야하며 극복되어야 할 과제라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 이런 역사적 과정 속에서 한문고전의 번역이 진보되지 못하고, 여전히 구조화된 비문 발생의 틀 속에 머물게 해서는 안 될 것이다. 이를 위해서는 역자들의 한문번역에 대한 과감한 인식 전환이 요구된다.

영어초록

Chinese classics has been translated by the government subsidy for forty years, but has been evaluated as being abstruse and difficult to read. In particular, recent review on the translation of classics indicated the problem of verbal communication. Every reviewer commented that the literal translation and unfamiliar chinese words led to the confusion of understanding and communication, that is to say, the problem of ungrammatical sentence.
Ungrammatical sentence means the sentence that would not express the exact meaning and context grammatically. But ungrammatical sentences in the translation of classics have a little more broad significance. In other words, ungrammatical sentences extend over expressional problem owing to unfamiliar chinese words, to say nothing of ungrammatical phrase owing to a literal translation.
The translation is an act which ensures an equal value of meaning between one language and another language. One language and another language means totally different semantics and syntax between languages. Accordingly, the words and grammatical structure of source language are not translated into target language as it is. But in translation of chinese classics, such a grammatical mistake is often and often again made, and leads to ungrammatical sentence. This situation is caused by the historical peculiarity of chinese classics in Korea.
Chinese writing system was formerly an official writing system in Korea. The Kap-o Reform of 1894 took away the official status of Chinese writing system. American military government in Korea exclude Chinese writing from education under the new system. The translation work of classics began in such circumstances. Senior scholars should obey the call of duty to translate a great deal of old classics and documentary records. But man power for translation work was wanting in ability and number, and scholars of Chinese classics took charge of major role.
The Chinese classics generation managed to learn Chinese writing and literature outside of degree education. They would not translate chinese classics into completely modern korean language, leaving traces of Chinese writing. Nevertheless they ought to take the initiative in translation of classics, and to train the new man power for translation. Without them, the translation of classics could not produce satisfactory results as of now. Ungrammatical sentence has been structuralized in such historical circumstances.
Therefore we should not ascribe the problem of ungrammatical sentence to individual defect. This problem is an inevitable task to carry out and to overcome in history of translation of classics. But we cannot disregard or keep up the structural error of ungrammatical sentence, and fail to innovate the translation system for classics. To this end, translators have to open one’s eyes and renew all knowledge and attitude on translation of classics.
