초록

본고는 道宣의 『續高僧傳』 感通篇을 중심으로, 『集神州三寶感通録』 서문과 『律相感通傳』에 나타나는 감통에 대한 기술을 분석하고, 개별 사료의 경계를 넘어 통합적인 관점에서 도선의 감통관을 고찰하였다. 『속고승전』에서 도선은 ‘감통’이라는 편목을 두면서도 그 내용에는 ‘神異僧’을 이야기의 주체로 하는 傳記를 포함한다. 이는 감통하는 대상에 ‘神僧’을 추가한 것과 관련하며, 도선 자신이 ‘神僧’과의 해후를 중시하였던 것에서 비롯된 것이라 파악된다. 『집신주삼보감통록』의 경우 下卷의 瑞經錄 序에는 승려가 경전을 수지독송하고 그 설한 바대로 수행하면 通感하는 것이 있다고 한다. 또한 卷下의 神僧感通錄에서는 승려의 冥力에 의해 正法이 없어지지 않았던 것이라 하며, 神異ㆍ神通에 따른 교화와 그에 있어 승려들의 佛道修行를 중시하는 도선의 관점이 나타난다. 『율상감통전』에는 불가사의한 현상이 일어나는 요인에 대해 수행과 지계를 갖춘 승려의 공력이 포함된 내용이 나타나며, 이로써 승려는 항상 지계수행에 힘써야 한다는 점이 강조된 면이 돋보인다. 아울러 佛寺에 관한 이야기의 경우 이들 불사의 由緣을 가섭불 시대로 기술하는 부분들이 나타나는데, 이때 그가 天人의 입을 빌려 前劫의 가섭불을 거론하는 것은 불교의 三世 관념에 관한 중국적 이식과 ‘佛先道後’의 뜻을 견지하는 입장이 투영된 것이라 볼 수 있다. 이들 기술에서 ‘감통’이란 神通ㆍ神異의 相에 나타나는 것이자, 승려가 지계하고 감통하여 속인을 교화하는 일련의 흐름 속에 파악되는 양상을 보인다. 이때 人知를 초월한 불가사의한 현상에 관한 도선의 기술들은 찬술자의 입장에서 그가 이해한 ‘감통’에 관한 관점을 보여주며, 이는 동시에 당시 도선이 불교도로서 입장하는 바를 함의한다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on the section of Gantong in Daoxuan's Xù gāosēng zhuàn 續高僧傳, and analyzes the descriptions of Gantong found in the preface of Ji shenzhou sanbao gantong lu 集神州三寶感通錄 and Lüxiang Gantong Zhuan 律相感通傳. Going beyond individual sources, this study examines Daoxuan's concept of Gantong 感通 (lit. penetration into stimuli) from an integrated perspective. In Xù gāosēng zhuàn, Daoxuan includes a section titled 'Gantong' while the content also encompasses biographies centered around ‘shenyiseong 神異僧(extraordinary monks)' as the subjects of the narratives. This pertains to the addition of ‘extraordinary monks' as subjects of empathetic communication, indicating a priority placed by Daoxuan himself on interactions with ‘extraordinary monks'. In the case of Ji shenzhou sanbao gantong lu, the preface of the lower volume's Ruìjīng lù 瑞經錄 [Record of Auspicious Scriptures] states that if a monk diligently recites and practices the scriptures as instructed, they will attain a state of empathetic communication. Furthermore, in the Shénsēng Gǎntōng Lù 神僧感通錄 [Record of Miraculous Communication with Eminent Monks] in the lower volume, it is mentioned that the Dharma was not eradicated due to the spiritual power of the monks. This reflects Daoxuan's perspective emphasizing conversion based on shenyi 神異 (thaumaturgy) and shentong 神通 (supernormal powers), and the monks' dedication to Buddhist practice within that context. In Lüxiang Gantong Zhuan, the content includes the efforts of a monk equipped with diligent practice and moral precepts as factors contributing to extraordinary phenomena. This emphasizes the point that a monk must always exert effort in maintaining moral precepts. Furthermore, in narratives related to Buddhist temples, there are passages describing the origins of these miraculous events as extending back to the time of Kasyapa Buddha. When he speaks through the mouths of heavenly beings, mentioning Kasyapa Buddha from the previous Kalpa, this can be seen as a reflection of the Chinese assimilation of the Buddhist concept of the Three Ages, embodying the meaning of 'Buddha precedes Dao. In these accounts, ‘Gantong' appears as an aspect of shentong and shenyi, and manifests in the interactions of the monk, who maintains moral precepts, empathetically communicates, and converts deceivers. This illustrates a discernible pattern within a series of events. Daoxuan's descriptions of extraordinary phenomena that surpass human comprehension in this context demonstrate his perspective on ‘Gantong' as understood from the standpoint of a practitioner deeply immersed in meditation practices. Simultaneously, this implies Daoxuan's position at that time as a devoted Buddhist practitioner.
