『석보상절』 권 20 연구 ─서지(書誌)와 언어(言語)를 중심으로 (A Study for 20th Volume of 『Seokbosangjeol (釋譜詳節)』 ―Focusing on Bibliography and Language)

초록

이 논의는 1447년(세종 29년)에 간행된 책인 『석보상절』 권 20의문헌적 가치와 책의 성격, 저경(底經) 및 관련 불서들과의 대응 관계,어학적 특성 등에 대한 규명 및 고찰을 목적으로 한 것이다. 논의한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 이 책은 훈민정음 반포(頒布) 다음해에 간행된 최초의 산문자료이다. 특히 한문 불경을 우리 문자로 옮긴 최초의 한글 경전이라는점에서 중요하다. 책의 편집 및 편찬 체제는 물론, 활자 하나하나에 이르기까지 모두 새로운 창안에 의해 이루어졌다. 번역에서 경(經)의 본문은 본문 그대로 당시의 우리말로 옮겼고, 계환(戒環)의 요해(要解)부분은 협주로 옮겨서 가독성(可讀性)을 높이면서도 이해의 편의를도모하도록 한 점 등에 대해 살폈다. 이러한 점에 비중을 두어 형태서지 등 편찬과 관련된 문헌적 가치를 밝혔다.
둘째, 『석보상절』은 애초에 모두 24권으로 간행되었다. 이 중 현전하는 초간본은 8권이고, 중간본은 2권뿐이어서 모두를 합해도 10권에지나지 않는다. 각 책은 모두 유일본으로 전해져 문헌적 가치가 높다.
권 20은 납탑본(納塔本)으로 훼손이 심한 편이다. 훼손된 부분에 대한내용을 정리하고,『 월인석보』,『 법화경언해』,『 동국정운』 등을 참고하여 이의 복원을 시도했다.
셋째,『 석보상절』 권 20의 저경은『 법화경』 권 6의 제22 촉루품(囑累品), 제23 약왕보살본사품(藥王菩薩本事品), 권 7의 제24 묘음보살품(妙音菩薩品) 등이다. 이 내용은 나중에 간행된 책인 『월인석보』(1459년 간행) 권 18과 『법화경언해』(1463년 간행) 권 6 및 권 7에다시 번역되어 실려 있다. 같은 내용이 시기를 달리해서 세 차례나 연달아 번역된 것이다. 이러한 관계를 감안해서 세 책의 대응 부분을 정리·제시하여 비교 연구가 가능하도록 했다. 세 책은 간행 연도에 따라, 그리고 편찬 방법 빛 편찬자의 언어 습관에 따라 얼마간 차이가 날수밖에 없다. 이 토대 위에서 『석보상절』의 특성을 찾고자 했다. 불교학 연구 및 국어사 연구 자료로 활용 가치가 클 것이다.
넷째, 어학적 특성을 밝혔다.『 석보상절』은 다른 불경언해서들과는달리 원문이나 정음 구결문 없이 번역문만으로 된 책이다. 그만큼 원문으로부터 자유로울 수 있는 환경에서 찬술되었다는 것을 함의한다.
그런 때문인지 번역이 비교적 자유역(自由譯)에 가깝고, 어휘도 비록한자어 기원의 어휘라고 해도 정음으로 적힌 것이 많다. 권 20에는 다른 문헌에 쓰인 적이 없는 희귀어 및 고어사전 미수록 어휘가 몇몇 보인다. 대표적인 어휘로는 ‘기’, ‘데엋’ 등을 들 수 있다. 그리고 ‘눈부시다’는 의미를 가진 형용사 ‘·-[耀]’와 ‘너그럽게, 큼직하게’의 뜻을 가진 ‘:게-[雄]’의 파생부사 ‘:게여·’도 처음 나오는 어휘이다.
기원적으로는 한자어지만 이 책에서 정음으로 적힌 어휘에는 다음 의 말들이 있다. ‘·/樣子/樣姿, :/樣, ·녜/常例, 침노·-/侵勞/侵擄·-, 류·-/風流·-, 미혹·-/迷惑·-, :·뎍/行蹟, :위·-/爲·-, :쳔/錢糧’ 등이다. 그리고 이렇게 한자어 어휘를 정음으로 적게 된 이유에 대해서도 살펴보았다.
이상의 논의를 통해 책의 형태서지, 보존 상태 및 훼손된 부분에 대한 원문 복원, 수록된 내용, 같은 내용이 번역되어 있는『 월인석보』 및『법화경언해』와의 대응 관계, 그리고 표기 및 형태의 특징, 희귀어 및고어사전 미수록 어휘 등 어휘의 특성에 대해 구명했다

영어초록

This research aims at examination of the literary value and linguistic characteristics of the 20th volume of『 Seokbosangjeol (釋譜詳節)』 that was published in 1447 (Sejong’s 29th year). Through thorough investigation and comparative study with the Buddhist sutras like『 Worinseokbo (月印釋譜)』 and『 Beophwagyeongeonhae (法華經諺解)』, I have concluded as indicated below.
First of all, this book is the first prose issued one year after promulgation of Hunminjeongeum (訓民正音). Especially,『Seokbosangjeol 』 is important because it is the first translation case of the Chinese Buddhist sutra into Hangeul . Editorial form,compilation structure, and every single type of this book were brand new inventions. I have investigated that, in the process of translation, the main texts of sutra (經) were translated into Korean following the originals, and that Yohae (要解, interpretation) of Gyehwan (戒環) was moved into Hyeopju (夾註, annotation that is inserted into the main text) to improve readability and to ease understanding. Considering these features, I proved the literary value, such as bibliography, related to the compiling process.
Secondly,『 Seokbosangjeol 』 was originally published as 24volumes. Among them, however, only 10 volumes, 8 volumes of first edition and 2 volumes of second edition, exist at the present. The 20th volume was archived in a pagoda (納塔本) and is seriously damaged. I have arranged the damaged part and tried to restore the damaged part by referring to『 Worinseokbo』,『Beophwagyeongeonhae』, and『 Donggukjeongun (東國正韻)』.
T h i r d l y , t h e b a s i s s u t r a o f t h e 2 0 t h v o l u m e o f 『Seokbosangjeol 』 are the 22nd Chokrupum (囑累品) and the 23rd Yakwangbosalbonsapum (藥王菩薩本事品) of the 6th volume and the 24th Myoeumbosalpum (妙音菩薩品) of the 7th volume of『 Beophwagyeong』. These parts were translated again in the 18th volume of『 Worinseokbo 』(published in 1459) and in the 6th volume and the 7th volume of『 Beophwagyeongeonhae 』(published in 1463), which were published later than 『Seokbosangjeol 』. In other words, one source had been translated three times. Considering the relationship among the three translated books, I have arranged and presented corresponding parts of the books to allow comparative study. By the publication years, the compilation process, and compiler's linguistic habits,these three books have different features. On this basis, I have tried to discover characteristics of『 Seokbosangjeol』. My work would contribute to the Buddhism Studies and the history of Korean language as a research material.
Fourthly, the translation of『 Seokbosangjeol』 is near to freetranslation (自由譯), and many words in this book were written in Jeongeum (正音) although the words were based on Chinese characters. In the 20th volume, we can find a few words with rare usage in the other literatures, and several words of the volume are unfindable in the archaism dictionary. Also, some words like following words were written in Jeongeum , while they were based on Chinese characters. I have examined the reasons why those Chinese words were written in Jeongeum .
As I have discussed above, this paper examines bibliography,contents, preserved condition of the 20 th volume of 『Seokbosangjeol 』, restoration of damaged parts, corresponding relationships with『 Worinseokbo』 and『 Beophwagyeongeonhae』which are other translations of the identical original book,characteristics of format and notation, and lexical characteristics like vocabularies with rare usage in the other texts and vocabularies that are unfindable in the archaism dictionary.
