This study explores the influence of friendship in attaining the position of bureaucrat by investigating the friendship of the ruling class, focusing particularly on Lee Gyu-Bo(李奎報) who lived under Military Rule during the Goryeo dynasty. This will thereby help explain an important aspect of Goryeo society.
At the start of his career, Lee Gyu-Bo took and passed the state examination(科擧) for becoming bureaucrat. However, he had difficulty becoming a bureaucrat in the situation that fixed number of bureaucrat was insufficient, so he looked for bureaucrat by using his friendship. He mostly relied on various relationships which he formed. As a result of this activity, he was recommended by some people several times；however, he failed to become a bureaucrat. This indicates that his relationships did not have a decisive effect on becoming a bureaucrat.
Lee Gyu-Bo, who at that point was not able to become a bureaucrat despite being recommended, could become a bureaucrat through his relationship with leaders of the Choi clan regime. Furthermore, these relationships exercised absolute influence on his advancement and degradation. This situation was not by no means limited to just him. Therefore, it could be argued that the ruling class of Goryeo society regarded the relationship with leaders of the Choi clan regime as a guarantee to a successful career. This was because the leaders of the Choi clan regime arbitrarily had used authority over human resources.
While Lee Gyu-Bo was in government service to the relation of leaders of the Choi clan regime, he entered into matrimonial relationship with clans located in a similar social position. Considering they did not originate from a highborn clan(門閥家門), it proves that the clan of Lee Gyu-Bo had married with non-highborn clan(非門閥家門) for several generations. Although his clan had produced bureaucrats since grandfather’s generation, his clan was not able to enter into marriage spheres of highborn clan centered around Choi clan of Ubong because his clan did not produce many Jaechu(宰樞) and men of national merit, so descendants of Lee Gyu-Bo could not use his marriage relationship to become bureaucrats. Accordingly, since he was concerned that his clan would not be able to produce bureaucrats, he passed on his connections to his descendants in order to help them enter the bureaucratic organization.
