초록

본 논문은 일본의 대표적 한센병소설 작가 호조 다미오의 삶과 문학을 그의 대표작 『생명의 초야』를 통해 고찰함으로써, 한센병문학의 의의와 현재성에 대해 논구한 연구이다. 일본의 한센병문학은 호조 다미오의 소설 『생명의 초야』를 통해서 세상 밖으로 나왔다. 오랜 동안 혹독한 혐오와 차별 그리고 공포의 대상이었던 한센병과 한센병자의 실상에 대한 정보가 당사자의 글을 통해 처음으로 사회로 발신된 것이다. 한센병자의 요양소 격리에 대한 최초의 문학적 자기표현, 소설『생명의 초야』에 대한 가장 적합한 정의라고 할 수 있다.
한센병자가 사회 밖에서 요양소 안으로 ‘수용’되는 과정은 실은 그가 사회 내부로부터 그 울타리 밖으로 ‘추방’되는 과정 외에 다름 아니다. ‘격리’를 본질로 하는 한센병 요양소의 ‘안과 밖’은 이렇게 대극의 의미로 맞물려 있다. 한센병 요양소는 한센병자 당사자에게 이계(異界)이자 미지의 세계다. 체념과 허무는 요양소 격리를 통해 불안과 공포로 증폭된다. 입소 후 직시한 중증 한센병자의 훼손된 신체는 그것이 피할 수 없는 자신의 미래를 의미하기에 전율과 자살 충동을 야기한다. 한센병은 한센병자에게도 결코 인정하고 싶지 않은 타자의 영역이다.
그러나 부정할 수 없는 것은, 한센병이야말로 고뇌의 근원인 동시에 존재를 규정하는 절대조건이라는 사실이다. 그 낯선 타자를 받아들이고 한센병자로서 살아가기까지의 과정을 소설 『생명의 초야』는 담담히, 생생히 그리고 있다. 그 과정은 과거의 삶에 집착해 한센병자를 타자로 바라보던 자신의 ‘인간’을 죽이고 한센병자로서의 ‘생명’을 새로이 받아들임을 통해 가능했다. ‘온 몸이 무너져도 좀처럼 죽지는 않는’ 한센병자의 비극적 숙명을 삶의 끈질긴 생명력으로 전화시킨 것이다.
그렇기에 한센병문학은 결코 한센병이라는 ‘특수한 세계’가 아니라 우리 삶의 보편성과 긴밀히 맞닿아 있다. 어떻게든 살아가겠다는 의지, 어떻게 살 것인가라는 고뇌야말로 ‘생명’을 지향하는 모든 이들에게 공통되는 보편적인 삶의 당면문제이기 때문이다. 한센병문학이라는 마이너리티문학의 의의가 결코 왜소할 수 없는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다. 소설 『생명의 초야』는 그간 은폐돼 있었던 한센병 요양소의 초야를 뜨겁게 지새움으로써 한센병문학이라는 새 생명의 새벽을 열었다.

영어초록

Attempts are made in the present paper to determine the significance and nowness of leprosy (Hansen's disease) literature by reviewing the life and literature of Hojo Tamio (北條民雄), who caught leprosy at the age of 20, through his masterpiece The First Night of Life. This work brought leprosy literature to light in Japan. In his novella, the writer sent Asia a message about the real states of leprosy and lepers who had long been maltreated and dealt with as objects of extreme fear, hatred and discrimination. A literary self-expression about lepers kept in isolation in a sanatorium might be the truest definition of the novella The First Night of Life.
The process in which lepers are hunted down to be confined in to sanatoria is no more than a sort of ostracism, from living within society to being forced to exist outside of it. The essential nature of sanatoria for lepers is isolation, signifying the fierce confrontation between insiders and outsiders. A sanatorium is a strange and unknown world for a leper in which his sense of resignation and futility develops into suspense and horror. Immediately after being admitted, he has to face the horrible sight of the impaired bodies of advanced stage lepers, which before would drive him to shuddering and now urged him to commit suicide since he knows it is the unavoidable course he will follow. Leprosy or Hansen's disease was a world that lepers themselves did want to accept under any circumstances.
It cannot be denied, however, that leprosy is a source of suffering, and at the same time a condition which absolutely defines the existence of a leper. The events from the moment a leper receives a strange other up to the moment he has lived his life with this stranger are described calmly but vividly in the novella The First Night of Life. Such events are only possible because the leper eventually accepts his life as a leper after killing the part of himself which had persistently stuck to his past life, looking upon lepers simply as others. The tragic fate of lepers whose disease does not kill its host until all parts of the body are totally destroyed is transformed into an insistent life force in the novel.
It may therefore be said that leprosy literature belongs not to a particular world at all but is closely connected with the universality of our lives. This is because our will to live in any way and struggle to find a way to live are common issues for all who endeavor to orient themselves toward life. This is why the significance of leprosy literature, though a minority branch, should not be underestimated. The novella The First Night of Life is said to open a new dawn of life for leprosy literature by heating up the first night of life in a sanatorium for lepers who have been set aside behind the curtain.
