전라남도 동부지역 학도병의 참전 연구: 화개전투 참전 학도병의 구술 증언을 중심으로 (A Study on the Participation of Student Soldiers in Eastern Jeollanam-do Province: Focusing on the Oral Statements of Student Soldiers in Battle of Hwagae)

초록

이 연구는 전사(戰史) 중심적 기록물에서 벗어나, 전쟁을 경험한 학도병들의 구술 을 바탕으로 참전 과정을 분석하였다. 전쟁이라는 거시적 흐름에서 벗어나, 학도병이 라는 개인에 초점을 맞춰 전투과정을 서술하였다. 필자는 지역민들조차 학도병이 있 었는지 화개전투가 무엇인지 모르는 상황에서, 그들의 존재가 잊혀지지 않게 하고자 구술인터뷰를 시작하게 되었다. 증언자들의 구술 범위를 생존 학도병과 더불어 학도 병 중대장 및 학도병 유가족으로 확장하여 새로운 시각으로 구성하였다. 그리고 학도 병들이 전투를 경험하면서 느꼈던 감정들과 당시 상황에 대한 구술증언을 통해 화개 전투를 재구성하였다.
화개전투가 발발한 지 71년이 지났기에, 생존 학도병들은 구술을 진행하는 동안 기억의 왜곡이 일부 발생하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 여러 학도병들의 구술을 모으고, TV 다큐멘터리, 신문, 책, 학도병동지회 자료 등을 종합한 끝에 화개전투의 전 과정 을 재구성할 수 있었다.
그 내용은 다음과 같다. 학도병들은 여수·순천 10·19사건을 목격하면서 전쟁의 참혹함을 느꼈으며, 그날의 경험은 한국전쟁이 발발하면서 학생들의 자발적 입대를 촉진시킨 계기가 되었다. 9일 간의 훈련을 마친 학도병들은 화개전투에서 북한군 6사 단과 전투를 치뤘는데, 아비규환의 현장을 경험하게 된다. 이때 생존 학도병들은 부상 당한 학도병들을 구하지 못한 미안함과 죄책감을 느꼈다. 그 이후 진주전투에서는 전 과 다른 모습으로 전투에 임하였다. 학도병들이 절반 정도 희생되자, 학도병 중대장은 대부분의 학도병들을 제주도 하사관학교에 입교시켜 더 이상의 희생을 막았다. 일부 학도병들은 전선에 계속 남으며, 치열한 전투를 헤쳐나갔다. 생존 학도병들은 전역 이 후 먼저 떠난 이들을 그리워하였고, 매년 추모활동을 이어나갔다.
학도병 구술을 통해 그들이 전쟁을 겪으면서 느꼈을 감정을 생각하고, 전쟁의 참혹함과 아픔을 공감하고자 한다.

영어초록

Apart from the war historical-centered records, this study analyzes the participation process of war based on the oral statements of student soldiers. The battles were described by the experience of individual student soldiers, not the macroscopic view of war. Even the local people did not know what the Battle of Hwagae was. For that reason, an interview with student soldiers was conducted to make them be remembered. The interviewees were surviving student soldiers, the company commander, and bereaved families of student soldiers. The interview revealed various points of view about the war. Based on the interview, this paper reconstructs the Battle of Hwagae through their oral statements of feelings and situations in the battles.
It has been 71 years since the Battle of Hwagae broke out. Some memories of student soldiers were distorted. Nevertheless, it was possible to reconstruct the entire process of the Battle of Hwagae by gathering the oral statements of various student soldiers and combining TV documentaries, newspapers, books, and the documents of the student soldier comrade council.
The contents are as follows. The student soldiers felt the horrors of war when they witnessed the Yeosu-Suncheon 10·19 Incident, and the experience of that day encouraged the voluntary enlistment of students when the Korean War broke out. After nine days of training, the students fought with the 6th Division of the North Korean Army in the Battle of Hwagae, where they experienced the pandemonium. At this time, the surviving soldiers felt sorry and guilty for not saving the wounded fellow soldiers. In the Battle of Jinju, their skill had improved. Nevertheless, about half of the student soldiers were killed. The company commander of the student soldiers admitted most of them to the Jeju-do Military Academy to prevent further casualties. Some student soldiers remained in the front line and kept fighting. After being discharged from the army, the surviving soldiers missed their deceased fellows and continued their annual memorial ceremonies.
This paper attempts to shed light on the student soldiers’ feelings and experience of war, and empathize with the horrors and pain of war through their oral statements.
