인명의 종류 고찰 - 역사와 유형별 종류, 논란을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Kinds of Person's Names - Focusing on History, Types, and Controversy -)

초록

본고는 우리의 인명을 근본 유형의 본명과 자, 호 유형의 호와 별명, 당호, 택호, 시호, 필명, 예명, 그리고 근본·호 이외 유형의 태명과 아명, 아이디, 닉네임, 교명, 보명 등으로 나누어서, 역사적 전개과정과 유형별로 구분하여 모든 종류를 검토하면서 관련 논란 내용까지 살폈다.
1909년 민적법 시행 이후 모든 국민이 두 글자 한자 본명 등 모든 인명을 가질 수 있지만, 그 때까지도 하층과 대부분의 여성은 아명 밖에 없었다. 본명의 경명사상으로 부명인 자가 생겼고, 본명과 자의 별칭으로 생긴 호에서 당호와 택호, 필명, 예명 등이 분화되었다. 해당 생애주기에 따라서 태명과 아명을 지었고, 특정 용도에 사용하기 위한 별명과 교명, 보명도 생성되었다. 본명과 호, 별명과 같이 오랜 기간 사용 중인 인명도 있지만, 전통적인 자와 시호는 이미 사라졌고, 아명과 당호, 택호는 멀지 않아 사라질 수도 있다.
논란 내용 중 본고에서 확인된 사항은 첫째, 冠名(관명)이란 성인 이전을 제외한 이후만의 본명을 지칭하므로 본명의 동의어가 아니다. 둘째, 항렬자 사용이 일반화된 기간은 근년이면서 오랜 기간도 아니고 오래전일수록 일부만 항렬자를 사용하였기에, 본명의 전통적인 작명을 항렬자 사용 여부로만 구분하는 것은 재고해야 된다. 셋째, 당호는 두 번째로 많은 호의 작명 유형이고, 필명은 생성 요인과 작명 유형이 호와 거의 동일하므로 지나친 호의 유형 분류는 옳지 않다. 넷째, 본명에서 별명이 분화되어 다명사회가 된 후, 인명은 소멸보다 더욱 다양하게 생성 분화되었으므로 일명사회로 돌아갈 수는 없다. 다섯째, 아명은 어린 아이의 애칭일 뿐 공부상 인명이 아니므로 본명을 성인 이전의 아명과 이후의 冠名으로 구분할 수 없다.

영어초록

This study examined the names of all kinds of people by dividing them into historical development processes and types, and also investigated the contents of the controversy. The fundamental types of person's names(人名) includes bonmyeong(本名) and ja(字). The ho types includes ho(號), byeolmyeong(別名), dangho(堂號), taekho(宅號), siho(諡號), pen-name(筆名), and yemyeong(藝名). The other types includes taemyeong(胎名), ahmyeong(兒名), ID, nick-name, gyomyeong(敎名), and bomyeong(譜名).
Since the enforcement of the Minjeogbeob(民籍法) in 1909, we have been able to have all person’s names including the bonmyeong that uses two-letters Chinese characters. Until then, however, the lower class and most women had only ahmyeong. The ja was created by gyeongmyeongsasang (敬名思想) in the bonmyeong, and the ho was made as a nickname for the bonmyeong and ja. Dangho, taekho, pen-name, and yemyeong were differentiated from ho. Based on the life cycle, ahmyeong and taemyeong were given, and byeolmyeong, gyomyeong, and bomyeong were also made for a specific purpose. Bonmyeong, ho, and byeolmyeong  have been in use for a long time, but traditional ja and siho has already disappeared, and ahmyeong, dangho, and taekho may soon disappear.
Among the contents of the controversy, the following were found in this study. First, since it means only the bonmyeong after becoming an adult, gwanmyeong(冠名) is not a synonym of the bonmyeong. Second, the generalization period of the use of hanglyeolja(行列字) is relatively recent and not long. Also, in the past, only some of them used it. Therefore it should be reconsidered to classify the traditional naming of the bonmyeong only by the use of the hanglyeolja. Third, dangho is the second most common types of naming among ho, and pen-name has almost the same generative element and naming types as the ho, so excessive classification of ho is not appropriate. Fourth, after the byeolmyeong is differentiated from the bonmyeong and becomes a multi-names society, person's names is created and differentiated more diversely than extinction, so it cannot return to the one-name society. Fifth, since the ahmyeong is only a pet name for a young child and is not a registered name, the bonmyeong cannot be divided into the ahmyeong before the adult and the gwanmyeong after the adult.
