연세대본 <별주부젼>의 이본적 특징과 작품세계 (Study on Different Version Characteristic of from the Collection of Yonsei University and Literary World)

초록

본고에서는 연세대본 <별주부젼>의 이본적 특징과 작품세계를 다루고자 하였다. 연세대본 <별주부젼>은 연세대학교 국학자료원에 소장되어 있는 작품을 말한다. 연세대본 <별주부젼>은 토끼전에서 이본으로 아직까지 크게 주목받지는 못한 작품이다. 그 이유는 이 작품이 토끼전의 이본으로서만 언급되었을 뿐, 작품의 소개와 성격에 대한 고찰이 이루어질 기회가 없었기 때문이다. 하지만 이 작품의 문면에서 읽혀지는 독특한 특징들은 충분히 검토의 여지를 드러내고 있으며, 검토의 필요성을 충분히 갖게 한다. 여기서는 연세대본 <별주부젼>을 본격적으로 소개하고 이 작품의 이본적 위상을 점검하고자 하였다.
본고에서 작품을 분석한 결과 연세대본 <별주부젼>에서 다음과 같은 특징을 도출할 수 있었다. 첫째, 연세대본 <별주부젼>은 필사기(筆寫記)나 사용되는 어휘로 볼 때 1916년에 필사된 작품으로, 전대(前代)의 소설본 토끼전의 화소(話素)와 판소리 가요사설의 영향을 확인할 수 있다. 둘째, 연세대본 <별주부젼>의 등장인물의 성격과 화소의 측면에서 서울대본 <토기젼>, 경북대본 <토기젼> 그리고 박순호본 <토별산수록>의 작품과 친연성이 확인된다. 특히 별주부를 통하여 용왕을 비판하는 장면이 독특하게 설정되어 있는데, 이는 토끼전의 이본 중에서 색다른 것이라 할 수 있어 주목된다. 셋째, 판소리 사설의 영향이 보이나, 현전 수궁가와는 전혀 다른 성격의 가요사설이 들어있음을 확인할 수 있다.
이러한 특징을 통하여 연세대본 <별주부젼>을 종합적으로 평가해보자면, 이 작품은 토끼전 중에서 비교적 후대의 등장한 국문필사본으로 판각본, 활자본 등 다양한 형태의 이본이 등장하였던 20세기 전반에 토끼전의 한 지향을 가늠할 수 있게 하는 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 특히 별주부를 충신(忠臣)으로 그리기보다는 용왕의 무능함을 폭로하고 조롱하는 인물로 그리고 있다는 점은 주목할만한 대목이다. 연세대본 <별주부젼>의 개작자는 봉건사회를 비판적으로 그리고, 미약하게나마 근대의식을 반영한 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 또한 토끼전에서 볼 수 없는 “짝타령” 등 중고제(中古制) 또는 서울지역의 음악문화가 반영된 가요사설이 들어 있다는 점도 눈여겨 볼 부분이다. 이는 이 작품의 등장 배경을 추정할 수 있는 단서가 된다. 이는 기왕의 소설본과 판소리, 가요사설 중에서 흥미요소가 될 만한 것을 조합하고 거기에다 작가의 개작의식이 더해지면서 나타난 현상으로 생각된다.
토끼전 이본의 계통은 기왕에 어느 정도 논의가 정리되었고 큰 흐름이 파악되었다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 연세대본 <별주부젼>과 같은 개별 작품에 대한 평가는 아직 미미한 형편이다. 이후 이러한 개별 작품의 검토와 분석이 이루어질 때, 판소리계 소설, 더 나아가 고소설에 대한 실질적인 평가가 진행될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

This study researched different version characteristic(異本的) of <Byeoljubujeon> from the collection of Yonsei University and its literary world. Yonsei University collection version <Byeoljubujeon> is a relatively long novel version of 50-page length among different versions(異本) of Tokkijeon, owned by Yonsei University Library National Literature Archive. Yonsei University version <Byeoljubujeon> has not largely received attention as a different version(異本) of Tokkijeon until now. Because this work had no opportunity to be introduced properly, and regular analysis of literary aspect of this work was not conducted. This research aimed at introducing <Byeoljubujeon> in the dimension of this critical mind and investigating literary world of this work and the characteristic of the different version.
As the analysis result, this research could draw the characteristics of Yonsei University version <Byeoljubujeon> as follows, first, Yonsei University version <Byeoljubujeon> was copied in around 1916, considering transcription record(筆寫記) or used vocabulary, where the influence of chat unit(話素) of novel Tokkijeon of previous generation(前代) and pansori song narration could be identified. Second, affinity with plate version <Tosaengjeon> series, Nason version <Tobyeolsansyurok>, and Park, sunho version <Tobyeolsansurok> was identified in Yonsei University version <Byeoljubujeon> characters and chat units(話素), etc. Particularly, a distinct intention to critically describe the Dragon King appeared through Byeoljubu, which showed very distinctive characteristic of this work. Third, this work showed the influence of pansori narration, however it was confirmed that it showed differentiated narration composition from presently transmitted Sugungga or completely different type song narration was included.
Based on this, when evaluating Yonsei University version <Byeoljubujeon> on the whole, this work enables us to imagine a direction of Tokkijeon in the early 20th century when various types of different versions appeared such as plate version, print version, etc. as the Korean manuscript(國文筆寫本) which appeared in relatively late posterity among Tokkijeon. Particularly, it described Byeoljubu as a character which exposed and laughed at incompetence of Dragon King(or central authority) rather than a loyalist(忠臣). This reflected the writer's adaptation consciousness, i.e. modern awareness, which looked at the Middle Age society, feudal society critically. Also, it is remarkable that it contains Junggoje(中古制) as “Jjaktaryeong”, etc. which couldn't be seen in Tokkijeon, or song narration which reflected music culture of SeoulㆍGyeonggiㆍChungcheong region. Because this becomes a clue to explain appearance background of this work.
Yonsei University version <Byeoljubujeon> shows various errors in the development of narration. This seems because it combined interest elements among the existing novel version, pansori, and song narration and added the writer's adaptation consciousness thereto. This work cannot be regarded only as a deviant work, nevertheless it is an independent work among Tokkijeon. Because this work reveals unique resistance awareness, satire, and spice of humor that 1910s'(early 20th century) Tokkijeon had when this work appeared.
Overall different version Tokkijeon system and series have been already developed with discourse in a certain degree and a large stream has been comprehended. However, evaluation of individual work as Yonsei University version <Byeoljubujeon> is still insufficient. The researcher expects that actual evaluation on pansori system novel, furthermore, classical novel can be conducted when review and analysis of this individual work is performed, henceforth.
