초록

鐵鏡은 西漢 조기에 등장해 東漢代와 魏晉代에 정점을 보이고, 隋唐代를 거쳐 北宋代에 쇠퇴했다. 철경은 漢代와 魏晉代에는 河南省 洛陽을 중심으로 한 黃河 유역의 북부에서 유행하였고, 금은상감으로 화려한 문양을 시문해 위계성을 강조한 특수 공예경이 유행했다. 반면, 東晉대에는 江蘇省 南京을 중심으로한 長江 이남에서 철경이 많이 출토 된다. 이는 중원의 漢族이 사회적 혼란기에 長江 이남으로 이동해 귀족문화를 꽃피운 것과 연결되고, 북부의 기술력과 생활 풍습이 남부에 많은 영향을 미치게 된 결과이다.
철경은 長江 이남과 이북의 불균형한 발전에 따라 출토 현황에 있어서 차이를 보인다. 위진대까지 河南省 洛陽을 중심으로 유행했으나, 동진대는 江蘇省 南京을 중심으로 유행한다. 이후 북조와 수당대에는 다시 河南省 洛陽이 철경 중심지로 부활한다.
철경의 생산은 동경 주조 산업과 연계되어 있는데, 철은 가격이 저렴하고 구하기 쉬워 동경의 대체품으로 사용되었으나 완전히 철경으로 대체되지는 않았다. 철경은 녹슬기 쉽고, 보관이 어렵던 사용상의 단점에 더해 주조시에 다양한 문양 주조가 어렵기 때문이다.
동경의 보편적이고도 저렴한 대안이었던 철경은 전란과 사회 혼란의 시기에 가장 이상적인 대안으로 제작되었고, 철경이 가진 한계를 극복하기 위해 특수 공예경으로 제작 활용되었으나 재료 자체가 가진 단점과 동경 주조 산업의 부활로 인해 수당대 이후 점차 사용이 감소하며 자연스럽게 쇠퇴해 가게 된다.

영어초록

The emergence of iron mirrors is identified in the early Western Han period. They reached their peak during the Eastern Han, Wei, and Jin periods, declined through the Sui and Tang dynasties, and further diminished by the Northern Song dynasty. The excavation status of iron mirrors demonstrates differences corresponding to the unequal development between the northern and southern regions. Particularly during the Han and Jin periods, iron mirrors were prevalent in the northern regions, where elaborately decorated mirrors with inlaid gold and silver patterns emphasizing hierarchical status were popular.
In contrast, the societal upheaval caused by the Rebellion of the Eight Kings and the establishment of the Sixteen Kingdoms by the Five Barbarians, along with the southward migration of the Han Chinese from the central plains, significantly impacted the southern regions with northern technologies and lifestyles.
Consequently, the development during the Eastern Jin dynasty led to an increase in iron mirrors in the southern regions as well. It is observed that iron mirrors are relatively concentrated in regions with advanced political, economic, and cultural centers at the time, such as the northern areas centered around Luoyang, and the regions around Nanjing, and Jiangsu Province, where both bronze and iron mirrors were cast simultaneously.
After the Eastern Han period, iron was widely used due to its affordability and ease of acquisition, and it served as a substitute for bronze mirrors under certain conditions. However iron mirrors never completely replaced bronze mirrors. This was due to the inherent drawbacks of iron mirrors, such as their susceptibility to rust, difficulty in preservation, and the challenges associated with casting intricate patterns.
Iron mirrors, which were a universal and economical alternative to bronze mirrors, were considered the most ideal substitutes during times of war and societal unrest. Despite attempts to produce and utilize special craft mirrors to overcome the limitations of iron mirrors, their usage gradually declined post-Tang dynasty due to the material’s inherent shortcomings, leading to their eventual decline.
