The purpose of this study is to collect and analyze all the regulations on military uniforms in the Daehan Empire, characterize the forms of military uniforms in each stage, and describe the process of variation in the uniforms. The results are as follows: First, the regulations on military uniforms defined four forms of military uniforms-full dress (jeongjang), military dress (Gunjang), formal dress (Yejang), and everyday dress (Sangjang)-in 1895 and were supplemented with a mourning ribbon as well as with the missing parts in the 1897 revision. Then, the overall revision of the regulations in 1906 divided the military uniforms into five forms: full dress (Daeryejang), military dress, formal dress, semiformal dress (Banyejang), and everyday dress.
Second, the separate regulations regarding the forms of military uniforms in the Daehan Empire began to be established in 1897. According to the times of overall revision of the regulations and the characteristic changes, the forms of military uniforms in the Daehan Empire can be divided into four stages: the first stage was from April 1895 to May 1897, the second one was from May 1897 to July 1900, the third one was from July 1900 to October 1907, and the fourth one was from October 1907 to 1910.
Third, based on the regulations, the stages for the forms of military uniforms in the Daehan Empire can be characterized as follows: The first stage is characterized by the helmet of round shape for the crown of the head as well as by the single-breasted center front of upper dress. The second stage is characterized by the center front of upper dress decorated with Hungarian knot for both formal and everyday dress. The third stage is characterized by the double-breasted center front of upper dress for formal dress and by the single-breasted center front of upper dress for everyday dress. The fourth stage is characterized by the same form of formal dress as before and by a dark brown hat, upper dress, and trousers for everyday dress.
The regulations on modern uniforms were carefully made of the rules regarding the types of dress, wearing occasion, and wearing components, the general regulations regarding the forms, and the drawing-based regulations. These regulations were applicable to the uniforms of police officers and civil servants as well as to the military uniforms. It is believed that they helped make and wear heterogeneous costumes of the new system in a consistent way.
This study is significant in the following ways: It summarized the regulations regarding the modern military uniforms so neatly that the changes of the uniforms could be seen at one view. The maximum amount of information that had been neglected by previous research was also summarized. The Chinese characters, which were difficult to comprehend though they were used to describe the forms of wearing components, were transcribed into modern language with the objective of making the regulations more comprehensible and helping further research. On the basis of the analysis of the regulations regarding military uniforms, they were divided into several stages according to the characteristics of forms, and some of the typical visual materials, including photographs and remains, were presented. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic data in conducting research on the modern history of military uniforms.
