『개벽』과 『별건곤』을 통해본 한국인의 한국자랑 (The Korean People's Sources of Pride Shown in Kaepyuk (開闢) and Beolgeongon (別乾坤) Magazines)

초록

본고는 1920년대 문화 계몽 운동을 주도한 개벽사 잡지 『開闢』과 『別乾坤』을 통해 한국문화의 자부심을 살펴보았다. 첫째, 『開闢』의 「팔도대표의 팔도자랑」을 통해 지역 특성과 자부심을 느낄 수 있었으며 조선 문화의 원천은 바로 지역의 자랑거리에 있음을 알 수 있었다. 특산물이나 공예는 팔도 자랑의 범주를 벗어나 한국의 특산물로 인식되어 호평을 받고 있는 대목들이다. 그런데 1925년『開闢』의「팔도대표의 팔도자랑」에 거론되었던 대목들이 1928년에 간행된『別乾坤』의「내가 자랑하고 싶은 조선 것」에는 지역 자랑에서 한발 더 나아가 조선자랑으로 나라의 전체 자랑 중의 하나로 인식되어 가는 양상을 볼 수 있다.
둘째, 1928년에 간행된 『別乾坤』「내가 자랑하고 싶은 조선 것」의 수많은 목록 중에서도 한글과 의식주 문화에 대한 자랑이 뚜렷하다. 이들은 한류 문화의 원천이며 이러한 한(韓)브랜드의 자랑은 1920년대부터 시작되었다고 볼 수 있다. 한옥, 한복, 한식이 주목을 받는 시기가 한국 민속에 대한 논의가 활발해지는 시기라는 점을 감안하면 정체성을 대변하는 이러한 주제는 민속학의 학문적 대두와 활성화 등 일련의 흐름과 함께 해왔다고 볼 수 있다.
셋째, 『開闢』과 『別乾坤』의 자랑 대목 중에서 한(韓)브랜드 자랑 못지않게 도덕적인 민족성에 자부심이 제기되고 있다.『開闢』과『別乾坤』을 통해본 한국문화의 자부심은 풍부한 지역문화와 한글·한옥·한식·한복을 비롯한 한(韓)브랜드, 그리고 국민성으로 요약할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper intends to review what the Korean people had been proud of between 20th and 21st centuries. To this end, the paper examined what the contemporary Korean's sources of pride were, which are shown in the modern magazines of Kaepyuk (開闢) and Beolgeongon (別乾坤) that had been published in the 1920s.
First, the article of「Pride of Leading Figures (Representatives) from the Eight Provinces of Korea about Local Specialties」in Kaepyuk demonstrates distinct local characteristics and Korean people's pride in their villages, districts, and provinces.
It also shows that the strength and richness of Joseon culture stems from the sources of local people's pride (people's pride in local specialties). Similarly, residents of towns, villages, and cities reproduce the birthplaces and provide storytelling places of figures & celebrities they take pride in and, therefore, serving as "bearers of history." Notably, local specialties and artifacts are being recognized as Korean specialties, going beyond the category of province specialties.
Furthermore, we can see that what are mentioned in「Pride of Leading Figures (Representatives) from the Eight Provinces of Korea about Local Specialties」in Kaepyuk in 1925 are also hailed as Joseon's (national) sources of pride, not just as a local pride, in the article of「What I am Proud of about Joseon」in Beolgeongon written in 1928.
Secondly, out of numerous sources of pride mentioned in「What I am Proud of about Joseon」in Beolgeongon, Korean people's pride in Hangeul (the Korean alphabet) and Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing), Hansik (Korean food), Hanok (Korean traditional clothing)is described more distinctly. All of these constitute the Korean wave culture and therefore, the Korean people's pride in the "Han- brands" can be considered to have begun in the 1920s.
Given that there are currently heated discussions on Korean folklore right at the time when Hanok, Hanbok and Hansik are at the center of attention for people around the globe, such themes representing Korean people's identity have been in line with a series of trends, including the emergence of folklore as a field of study.
Thirdly, out of sources of pride shown in Kaepyuk and Beolgeongon, there are an increasing number of discussions on ethnicity of the Koreans as much as on "Han- brands." The national characteristics the modern Korean people were proud to have were 1) a sense of morality, love of peace, immense potential, 2) smartness, excellent language abilities, good health.
