초록

이 논문은 이청준 문학의 현대성을 중편 「소문의 벽」을 중심으로 시선과 광기의 정치학이라는 맥락에서 분석하고자 했다. ‘시선’과 ‘광기’라는 주제는 현대적 주체의 형성과 관련된 중요한 테마이다. ‘광기’는 주체성의 논리가 타자화 했던 대상이고, 광기에 대한 시선은 이성의 자기정당화의 요구와 연관되어 있다. 중편 「소문의 벽」은 광기를 타자화 하는 이성의 시선과 그것이 바탕하고 있는 권력과 언어의 문제를 예리하게 보여주는 텍스트이다. 광기를 둘러싼 시선의 권력이라는 측면에서 이청준의 문학이 더욱 정교한 소설적 질문법을 만들어내는 것은, 그 사이에서 언어와 글쓰기의 문제를 사유하기 때문이다.
이 소설에서 전짓불 앞의 공포로 상징되는 상황은 진술을 불가능하게 하는 권력의 억압이라는 도식을 넘어서서, 소설쓰기 자체에 내재하는 근원적인 억압을 사유하는 만든다. 작가는 진술의 공포와 소설쓰기의 불가능성을 동시에 사유하고 소설쓰기의 가능성을 메타적인 방식으로 보여준다. 이 소설의 또 다른 비판적 성찰의 대상은 진술의 공포와 광기의 문제를 둘러싼 현대적 의료 권력의 시선이다. 정신병원의 김박사는 광인을 대하는 현대적 의료 권력의 시선을 선명하게 보여준다. 여기서 시선과 광기의 정치학이 성립된다. 전짓불의 공포란 진술주체가 마주하게 되는 시선의 공포이다. 소설에서 박준의 광기는 그 시선의 폭력 앞에서 어떻게 자신을 보존할 수 있는가 하는 점에서 중요성을 갖는다. 현대적인 의료권력이 광기를 관리하는 방식은 배제와 억압이 아니라, 시선에 의한 관리 방식이다. 정신분석으로 대표되는 현대적인 의료권력이 광기에 대한 전지전능한 이성의 시선을 보여준다면, 소설의 언어는 그와는 다른 지점에서 광기에 대한 문학적 대화를 시도한다. 서사의 내부에서 박준의 광기는 소설쓰기를 불가능하게 하는 것이지만, 그 광기를 이야기함으로써 이 소설은 광기를 둘러싼 세계를 탄핵하는 소설쓰기를 가능한 것으로 만든다.
중편 「소문의 벽」에서 보여주는 것은, 이성의 타자로서의 광기를 배제함으로써 근대적 주체성의 원리를 확립하는 것이 아니라, 권력과 광기의 상호성을 사유함으로써 광기와 대화하는 새로운 문학 언어의 가능성을 탐문하는 것이다. 그것은 계몽적 이성의 확립을 통해 현대성을 성취하는 방식이 아니라, 이성과 비이성의 긴장관계 속에서 광기를 생산하고 관리하는 현대성을 비판적으로 성찰하는 것을 의미한다. 근대적 주체성의 원리에 대한 문학적 해석이자 동시에 문학적 비판인 이런 지점은 미적 현대성의 일부라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper tried to analyze the modernity of Lee Chung-Joon's literature centering his novelette, 「The Wall of Rumors」in the context of politics of attention and lunacy. The themes of 'attention' and 'lunacy'are important themes related to the formation of modern object. The 'lunacy' is the object making the logic of objectivity into others, and the attention on th lunacy is connected to the need for self justification of rationality. His novelette,「The Wall of Rumors」is the text sharply showing the rationality's attention making the lunacy into others and the matters of power and language based on that. The reason why Lee Chung-Joon's literature made more elaborate fictitious question method in terms of the power of attention surrounding the lunacy is because he thought the matters of language and writing between them(the attention and the lunacy).
In this novelette, the situation symbolizing the fear before the electric light makes the reader the essential suppression embedded in writing a novel, beyond the scheme of suppression of power making the statement impossible. The author thinks the fear of statement and the impossibility of writing novels at the same time, and shows the possibility of writing novels in the metaphoric way. Another object of critical insight is the attention of modern medical attention surrounding the both matters of fear of statement and lunacy. Dr. Kim, a psychiatrist in a mental hospital clearly shows the modern medical power's attention treating madmen.
Here forms the politics of attention and lunacy. The fear of electric light is the fear of attention which the stating object faces. In the novelette, Park Joon's lunacy has the importance in that how it can preserve itself before the violence of attention. Modern medical power's method managing the lunacy is the management by the attention, not by the exclusion and suppression. While modern medical power represented by the psychoanalysis shows the omniscient rationality's attention on the lunacy, the language of novelette tries the literary dialogue about the lunacy from a different position. Park Joon's lunacy makes writing a novel impossible in the story, but by talking about the lunacy, this novel makes writing a novel impeaching the world around the lunacy.
What the novelette, 「The Wall of Rumors」shows is not the establishment of principles of modern objectivity by excluding the lunacy as making the rationality into others, but the investigation about the possibility of new literature language talking the lunacy by thinking the interactivity between power and lunacy. That means to critically reflect on the modernity producing and managing the lunacy through the rationality and its tense relationship, not the way achieving the modernity through the establishment of educative rationality. This point of literacy interpretation and criticism about the principles of modern objectivity can be said as a part of esthetic modernity.
