벽초 홍명희와 漢詩 아비투스 (Byeokcho Hong Myeong‐hee and habitus of Sino‐Korean poetry)

초록

洪命憙(1888～1968)의 생애와 문학에 대해서는 그동안 상당한 연구 성과가 축적되었다. 강영주 교수의 『벽초 홍명희 연구』와 『벽초 홍명희 평전』을 통해 그에 대한 종합적이고 심층적인 분석이 이루어졌다. 최근 1920년대의 작품 수편이 새로 발굴되기도 하였다. 한문을 제1의 文語로 하며 성장한 벽초가 한시를 남긴 것은 특별한 일이 아니다. 다만, 한문글쓰기를 스스로 억제하려 한 그의 태도에도 불구하고, 당시의 현실은 여전히 축수시·만시 등 한시의 아비투스를 필요로 하였고, 벽초는 베설·박은식·신규식·여규형 등 사회적 민족적 차원의 기대에 응하여 한시로 만시를 지었다. 또한 정인보·방응모·현상윤 등과 교유하며 한시를 수창하였고, 또 아우 홍성희 등 가족을 그리워하는 정회를 한시에 담아 신문에 발표하였다. 즉 벽초에게 자신의 정회를 표현하는 서정 장르는 곧 한시였다. 해방 이전까지 그는 시조·자유시를 짓지 않은 반면 주로 한시를 지었다. 그런 점에서 벽초의 문필 활동은 漢學의 아비투스 또는 漢文脈의 지속이라는 측면에서 고찰될 필요가 있다.
벽초의 한시 가운데 1930년 서대문형무소에서 지은 5언 100구의 「述懷」는 중요성에 비해 그동안 충분한 분석이 시도되지 못했다. 정인보의 면회를 받고 그 회답의 형식으로 지은 이 시에서 그는 식민지지식인이 걸어야 했던 지난한 역정을 돌이켜보고 비록 몸은 갇혀있지만 독립에 대한 의지는 더 강고해졌음을 표현하였다. 이 시는 긴 편폭에 자신의 생을 성찰하고 속마음을 술회했다는 점에서 벽초의 글 가운데 매우 특별한 서정성을 지니고 있다. 벽초는 해방 1주년을 맞이하여 지은 자유시 「8·15 기념」이 주목된다. 이 시는 필자에 의해 발굴된 것으로, 5연 62구의 긴 편폭에 신탁통치 문제 등 혼란한 해방정국을 시로서 성찰하였다. 벽초는 이 시에서 당시의 한반도를 오랜 병마에서 벗어난 환자에 비유하여, 좌우의 부축을 받지 않고 혼자 걸어가고 싶지만 현실은 남의 힘에 의존하려는 무기력과 광대들 만이 만연해 있다고 가슴 아파하였다. 신탁통치, 단독정부 수립 등 첨예한 사안으로 여론이 분열되던 1946년 8월의 시점에서, 한반도의 진로에 대해 고심하는 민족적 자아의 숨결이 이 시에 담담하게 토로되었다. 그런데 이 「8·15 기념」은 해방을 맞아 지은 「눈문 섞인 노래」와 마찬가지로 자유시로서의 성취는 두드러지지 않는 반면 對句的 표현 등 한시의 전통과 일정하게 맥이 닿아있다. 요컨대 벽초의 한시와 자유시의 저류에는 한학의 아비투스가 일정하게 작동하고 있었다. 또한 벽초는 현실 상황에 따라 한시 양식을 능독적으로 제어하는 면모를 지녔다.

영어초록

The life and literature of Hong Myeong‐hee (1888～1968) have been much studied and considerable materials are accumulated. Professor Kang Young‐ju made comprehensive and in‐depth studies in her “Study on Byeokcho Hong Myeong‐hee”(1999) and “Critical Biography of Byeokcho Hong Myeong‐hee”(2004).
While recently attentions were paid to sino‐Korean literatures in modern transition times, many sino‐Korean poems of Hong Myeong‐hee were found. Many of his sino‐Korean poems written in 1920s were newly found. It is not unusual that Byeokcho who grew up using sino‐Korean as his first written language left sino‐Korean poetry. Regardless of his attitude to coerce sino‐Korean writing, the contemporary reality needed sino‐Korean poetry habitus such as celebration poetry (poems congratulating the 60th birthday), and condolatory poetry, and Byeokcho wrote condolatory poetry in sino‐Korean to respond to the social and ethnic expectations of Beseol, Park Eun‐sik, Shin Kyu‐shik and Yeo Kyu‐hyeong. Besides, he made friends with Jeong In‐bo, Bang Eung‐mo and Hyun Sang‐yun and recited sino‐Korean poetry. He also published sino‐Korean poetry expressing his feelings missing his family including his brother Hong Seong‐hee on newspapers. In other words, the lyric genre of Hong Myeong‐hee to express his feelings was sino‐Korean poetry. Before independence, he mainly wrote sino‐Korean poetry while he did not write Sijo (traditional three verse Korean poem) and free verse. In this point, writing activities of Byeokcho need to be reviewed in the aspect of sino‐Korean habitus or continuation of sinogaphic context.
Among his sino‐Korean poetries, 「Effusion of thoughts and feelings」 of 5언 100구 composed in Seodaemun Prison in 1930 has not been analyzed sufficiently comparing to its importance. In this poem written to answer Jeong In‐bo’s visit, he expressed that his will to independence became stronger even though his body was confined in the prison recalling the troubled journey of intelligence in the colony. This poem has special lyrical value among writings of Byeokcho in that he recalled his life and described his mind in this long verse. Additionally, the ego of this poem has the characteristic of ethnic ego in that it was written to show effusion of thoughts and feelings of a patriot who was imprisoned because of Shinganhoi People’s Meeting Incident.
The free verse “Commemoration of August 15” by Byeokcho at the first anniversary of independence attracted attention. This poem was found by the writer, which described chaotic situations righter after independence such as introduction of trusteeship to Korea in long verse of 5 yeon(연) 62 gu(구). Byeokcho compared the Korean peninsula to a patient recovering from long ailments. He lamented deeply that the helpless and clowns who wanted to depend on others were prevalent in reality, although he wanted to walk alone without holding somebody else’s arms. At the point of split of opinions in August in 1946 because of hot issues such as trusteeship and establishment of government in South Korea, he expressed his ethnic ego contemplating and agonizing over the future of Korea. This “Commemoration of August 15” showed the tradition of sino‐Korean poetry such as comparative expressions, while it did not show achievements as free verse just like “Song mixed with tears” written in the days of independence. In other words, it can be said that habitus of sino‐Korean literature underlay in the base of sino‐Korean poetry and free verse of Byeokcho Hong Myeong‐hee
