와타나베 도오루(渡邊暢) 판사의 신앙과 민족운동 지원에 관한 연구 (A Study on Christian Life of the Judge Watanabe Toru and his Assistance)

초록

본 논문에서는 신앙인이며 법조인으로 식민지 조선에서 일본인으로살아온 와타나베 도오루(渡邊暢)라는 인물을 다루고자 한다. 와타나베는언더우드와 에비슨의 요청으로 연희전문과 세브란스의전의 설립이사로참가하여 법인기부행위(정관)를 작성하여 총독부에 학교등록을 하도록하였고, 재판장으로 독립운동가들의 재판과 변호인으로 대만독립운동가들의 재판에 참여하였다. 한국에 부임하기 전에 이미 일본에서 YMCA 운동과 평화운동에 깊게 참여하였고, 그의 신앙과 평화사상은 그 후의 식민지 조선에서의 삶에 큰 영향을 주고 있을 것으로 추정된다.
본 논문에서는 와타나베의 생애와 신앙을 살펴보고, 연희전문의 법인기부행위 작성과 105인 사건과 독립운동에 관련된 활동, 그리고 대만 독립운동가를 위한 변호활동을 조사하여 한 일본인 기독교신자가 지배와저항의 틈바구니에서 어떻게 자신의 신앙과 양심을 실천해 왔는지 탐구하고자 한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to examine christian faith and life of the Judge Watanabe Toru who had lived in Korea during Japan’s colony era as a Japanese christian. He had not only drafted the Charter of the Incorporation of the Chosun Christian College (Yonhui Junmoon School) and the Severance Medical College (Severance Jumoon School) which is now called Yonsei University as a board member in order to request from H.G.Underwood and O.R.Avison, but also had participated in the trial of independent activists in Korea as the presiding judge and in Taiwan as an attorney. This article studied the first materials on his christian faith and life on how he realized his faith in life as a Japanese christian in-between of domination and resistance in Korea. According to this research, we recognized that the Judge Watanabe as a cordial christian tried to overcome the limitation of his times by keeping his consciousness and christian pacifism. He might keep his conscious decision and lifestyle without imperialistic prejudice in spite of his highest position in Japan’s colony as the judge of the supreme court due to his faith and life based in the Biblical teaching. We could find the several contents by this article as follows.
First, Watanabe had participated deeply in the YMCA movement to involve in christian intelligent community led by Rev. Masahisa Uemura who baptized him. Even though he was possible of taking unfair treatment from Japanese political leaders, he might keep his conviction on christian doctrine and always express his faith cited the Scripture. Second, Watanabe might try to teach his christian pacifism derived from the Bible even though most intelligent leaders thought of peace keeping under the international order by his participation in the Japan Peace Society.
Third, Watanabe worked for drafting of the Charter of the Chosun Christian College and the Severance Medical College to make the educational institute of shielding the christian identity forever to use a Japanese traditional norm applied to the Charter of Doshisa and Meiji Gakuin colleges. Fourth, Watanabe judged Korean rebellion crime suspects against Japanese Imperialism not guilty and supported independent activists of Taiwan for petition of autonomy congress as a lawmaker as well as an attorney against Japanese imperialism. His decision might lean to his faith and christian consciousness.
Even though he was in a very difficult situation as a judge and a lawmaker of Japanese imperial government, his decision to support Korean and Taiwanese christians might derive from his faith and his christian consciousness. We need to analyze his writings and activities to enhance this research by collecting first materials.
