초록

이 글은 [고전번역+비교문화학연구단]의 의제(Agenda)가 인문학의 길을 묻는 이 자리에서 어떤 의미 있는 하나 갈래 길을 열어 보일 수 있을지, 공동/개인의 ‘연구의 실천적 지평’에서 반성하고 또 전망해 보고자 한 것이다. “고전번역학과 비교문화학은 기본적으로 문화와 문화 간(in-between)의 횡단적 학문이라는 공통점을 갖는다. 고전번역학이 시간적 거리를 오간다면, 비교문화학은 공간적 거리를 넘나든다. 이렇게 시공간을 교직하는 존재로서 우리의 탐구의 핵심을 이루는 것은 바로 고전이다. 중심부는, 역사적으로, 고전을 통해 그 자신의 이데올로기를 온축하고 수호하는 도구로서 활용해왔다. 또 주변부는 중심/주변의 논리를 가로지르고 그 경계를 해체하려 하면서도, 한편으로 그 기저에서 중심부의 논리를 모방, 반복하며 자신만의 독자성을 주장하기 위한 도구로 고전을 활용하기도 하였다. 이런 역사의 단면들은 고전이 다분히 수직적이고 방향적인 문화 소통의 중심에 있었음을 말해준다. 그리고 이에 대해 비판적으로 성찰하게 될 때, 고전은 우리가 무엇에 종속되어 있는가를 검증하는 타자가 될 수 있다. 그런 성찰과 비판이 우리의 몫이며, ‘고전이 고전에 저항하는 텍스트’일 수 있도록 할 수 있는 것이다.
이런 문제의식에서 우리는 ‘서양’, ‘성리학’, 그리고 ‘불교’라는 한국의 문명적 전환을 추동한 세 개념에 관심을 갖고 있다. 문명의 전환은 그 자체로 ‘번역’적인 국면이다. 안과 밖, 과거와 현재, 나와 너의 경계 속에서 시간과 공간의 교류가 일어나기 때문이다. 이 문명 전환기의 ‘번역’은 언어 대 언어의 변환 문제를 넘어서 문화 대 문화 간의 소통과 충돌의 문제로서의 ‘번역’의 문제를 사유하는 핵심이 된다. 저항성을 담지한 피식민의 경험과 유교․불교를 비롯한 전통 사유와 지식의 전통, 몇 년 단위로 급변하며 달라지던 20세기 초반의 사회적 요구 속에서 ‘서구/근대’는 일방적이고 균질적인 목표가 될 수 없었을 것이다. 여기에서 우리는 식민지라는 ‘회색 지대’에에서 한국 고전번역학의 한 가능성을 탐색해 볼 여지를 발견할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper intends to reflect upon and view the agenda for [HK Research Team for Translation studies of classics + Comparative cultural studies] in the occasion asking for the future path for the humanities, and whether it can open a significant divergent road, ‘the realistic horizon for the researches’ for the groups/individuals.
“Translation studies of classics and Comparative cultural studies have something in common in that it is the cross-over field of academics in-between the culture and another culture. If the Translation studies of classics translated the cultures and the cultural contents across time, the Comparative cultural studies would compare the cultures and the cultural contents across spatial distances.”As such, the existence weaving the space and time and constitutes the core for our examination is the study of classics.
The core part has been utilized as the tool for applying and upholding its own ideology through classics throughout history. The periphery crosses the logic of the core/periphery and attempts to dissolve the boundary and yet, used the classics as the tool for imitating the logic for the core part and for claiming the authenticity at its basis. This indicates how the study of classics has had its place in the center of rather vertical and directional cultural communications. Upon critically examining this, the contemporary significance of the classics could be the other subject proving on which we depend. Such introspection and criticism is our responsibility and ‘the study of classics must be the text resistant to the study of classics. ‘ The values in the study of classic includes its ‘universal values’ it contains but also, awakens the new values obtained the existing values and can be read in such a novel way across the passing time and various spaces. From this awareness of the problem, the three ideologies which are driving forces for the transition for Korea’s civilization have been explored, ‘the West’, ‘Sung Confucianism’ and ‘Buddhism’. The transition of the civilization itself is the aspct from ‘translation’ perspective because the exchange of time and space within the border of inside and out, past and the present and “me” and “you” occurs. In such transitional time for civilizations, ‘translation’ surpasses the issue of conversion from language to language and Korean origin linking the issue of ‘translation’ as the problem of communication and disputes between cultures. Moreover, this transition has been used as the positive and negative goals for understanding and exploring Korean history after the period and the pre-modern Korean history across time, and thus the practice of the past as well as the present. ‘Western/modern’ cannot be one-sided and homogenous goal in the social demands of the early 20th century which rapidly change by every couple of years, including the experience of colonization along with the traditional thinking such as Confucianism and Buddhism and the tradition of knowledge. From this we can awaken our awareness to explore the state of ‘hybrid’ which seems like the ‘strange patchwork’ to the ‘grey area’ of our colonization and the contemporary era transplanted from it. By doing so, our ‘contemporary’, will not remain in the suspended time in the past as the whole of transplantation and distortion but opens the path to communicate with us in the present.
