한국고전번역원 대중화 사업의 성과와 전망 (Performance and Prospects of institute for the translation of Korean Classics Popularization Project)

초록

한국고전번역원은 한국 고전의 번역과 대중화를 통해 전통과 미래를 잇는 역할을 수행하고 있다. 2023년 중장기 전략으로 홍보와 협력 강화, 콘텐츠 개발, 소통 확대를 추진하며, 뉴미디어 활용과 대외협력처 신설로 대중화 사업을 체계적으로 운영 중이다.
한국고전번역원의 대중화 사업은 번역원이 정리, 번역한 방대한 성과물 중 대중이 쉽게 읽을 수 있으며 교훈을 얻을 수 있는 자료를 선별하고 고전번역서, 대중서 출간, 기관보 발간, 메일링서비스, 대중강좌 개최, 공모전 개최, 한문고전자문서비스 등의 방식을 통해 고전 자료를 재가공하는 대중화 사업을 진행하고 있다.
2023년 말까지 번역원에서 간행된 2,251책의 도서 중 대중서는 특히 2012년 ∼2018년에 집중되어있다. 교육부의 지원을 받아 진행된 초중등 대상 고전읽기 자료 개발 보급 사업(이하 수탁사업)과 번역원 본사업을 통해 53종 65책의 대중서가 간행되었다. 번역원에서 정리 및 번역한 고전을 바탕으로 교과목과 연계한 고전 읽기 자료를 개발하여 고전에 대한 교육 현장 수요에 부응하고자 하였다.
기관보 고전사계는 연 4회 발간, 회당 4,500부를 배포하며 전자책으로 제작하여 열람서비스를 제공한다. 번역원 소식은 물론 학계의 연구 동향에 대한 기사를 통해 고전 문화에 대한 정확한 정보를 제공하고, 다양한 연령과 배경을 가진 대중들의 이해도에 맞춰 흥미로운 콘텐츠까지 총망라한다는 점에서 한문 고전 관련 연구자와 대중까지 아우르는 종합 소식지의 역할을 수행한다. 고전산책메일링서비스는 고전 명구, 한시, 산문을 현대적으로 재해석하여 약 4만 6천명의 구독자에게 발송하고 있다. 은평구청과 협업하여 진행하는 고전특강 고마움(고전으로 마음을 움직이는 시간)은 학계와 문화계를 대표하는 연구자들이 강연자로 나서고, 은평구민을 대상으로 진행하는 대중강연이다. 이 외에도 작년 하반기 대외협력처가 신설되며 은평구 가족센터, 서초구립 반포도서관 등 다양한 기관과 협업을 통한 강연 및 행사를 확대하고 있다.
2017년 이후 대중화 사업 전담부서가 존재하지 않고 파편화되어 체계적인 사업의 관리 및 확장이 어려웠다. 이에 번역원은 2023년 8월 대외협력처 신설을 통해 번역원이 축적해 온 기존의 대중화 성과를 계승하고 활용하는 동시에 새로운 시대 환경과 대중의 요구를 반영하여 고전 콘텐츠의 규모와 그 수요 대상을 확대하려 시도하고 있다. 번역원의 대중화 사업에서 향후 힘을 쏟아야 할 중점 과제는 1)수요자의 관심사를 반영한 대중화 사업 기획, 2)중장기 계획 수립과 번역원의 특성에 맞는 대중화 사업 수행이다. 대중과 번역원이 상호작용하여 대중들이 원하는 고전 콘텐츠를 파악하고, 이를 번역원만의 특성을 살려 체계적으로 대중화 사업을 수행해야한다.

영어초록

Institute for the translation of Korean Classics(ITKC) is playing a role in connecting tradition and the future through the translation and popularization of Korean classics. It promotes strengthening publicity and cooperation, content development, and communication expansion as a mid- to long-term strategy in 2023, and systematically operates the popularization project by using new media and establishing an external cooperation office. ITKC's popularization project selects materials that can be easily read and learned by the public among the vast achievements organized and translated by ITKC, and reprocesses classical materials by means of classical translation, publication of popular books, publication of institutional reports, mailing services, public lectures, competitions, and korean classics advisory services. Among the 2,251 books published by ITKC by the end of 2023, popular books are particularly concentrated from 2012 to 2018. 53 types of 65 popular books were published through the project to develop and distribute classical reading materials for elementary and secondary schools (hereinafter referred to as consignment projects) and the ITKC original project with the support of the Ministry of Education. Based on the classics organized and translated by ITKC, we tried to meet the demand for the educational field for classics by developing classical reading materials linked to the subject. The newsletter ≪Four Seasons of Classics≫ is published four times a year, distributes 4,500 copies per episode, and produces them as e-books to provide reading services. In that it provides accurate information on classical culture through articles on academic research trends as well as news and covers interesting contents according to the understanding of the public of various ages and backgrounds, ≪Four Seasons of Classics≫ plays the role of a comprehensive newsletter that encompasses researchers related to Chinese classics and the public. Walk with Classics Mailing Service sends a modern reinterpretation of classical masterpieces, Chinese poems and prose to about 46,000 subscribers. Classics of classics, which are conducted in collaboration with Eunpyeong-gu Office, is a public lecture conducted by researchers representing academia and culture for Eunpyeong-gu residents. The Ministry of External Cooperation was established in the second half of last year, and lectures and events are expanded through collaboration with various organizations such as the Eunpyeong-gu Family Center and the Seocho-gu Banpo Library. Since 2017, it has been difficult to systematically manage and expand the business as a department dedicated to popularization projects has not existed and has been fragmented. Accordingly, KOMAUM is attempting to expand the size and demand of classical content by reflecting the new era environment and the demands of the public while inheriting and utilizing the existing popularization achievements accumulated by ITKC through the establishment of the External Cooperation Agency in August 2023. The key tasks to be focused on in the future in ITKC's popularization project are 1) planning a popularization project that reflects the interests of consumers, 2) establishing a mid- to long-term plan, and carrying out a popularization project that fits the characteristics of ITKC. The public and ITKC should interact to identify the classical content that the public wants, and systematically carry out the popularization project by utilizing the characteristics of ITKC.
