남성성에 따른 여성 욕망의 수용 양상과 의미 - <상사뱀> 설화를 중심으로 (The Acceptance Patterns and Meanings of Women's Desire according to Masculinity - With a focus on Sangsa Snake tales)

초록

본 연구는 우리나라에서 전해오는 이야기 가운데 <상사뱀> 설화에서 여성 욕망을 다루는 방식에 주목하였다. <상사뱀> 설화는 남녀의 사랑을 제재로 한다는 점에서 사랑의 욕망과 욕망 실현 양상이 젠더와 직접적 연관을 가진 이야기이기 때문이다. <상사뱀> 설화는 집착적 사랑, 거부된 사랑, 욕망으로 인한 변신, 죽음 혹은 승화의 결말 서사로 남녀의 성적 욕망을 가장 직접적으로 보여주는 이야기이며, 변신이라는 소재로 욕망의 극단적 상황을 보여주는 이야기이다.
한국구비문학대계에 전승 채록된 상사뱀 설화는 모두 22편이 있는데 그 가운데 여성을 사모하여 남성이 상사뱀이 된 남성형 상사가 5편, 남성을 사모하여 여성이 상사뱀이 된 여성형 상사가 17편이다. 상사뱀 설화에서 여성형 상사 유형이 남성형 상사 유형보다 두 배가 더 많은 것은 여성의 욕망이 금기시되었던 봉건제 사회에서 전승된 구비문학의 전복적 속성을 보여준다.
남성 상사뱀의 욕망 맺기는 일방적이며 욕망 풀기는 신체적으로 드러나는데 전면적 접촉과 신체 장악으로 대상 여성의 죽음으로 끝이 난다. 여성 상사뱀의 경우 여성 인물은 양반, 평민, 천민 모두 등장하며, 2편을 제외하고 대상 남성은 양반의 신분이다. 또 남성과의 동침, 남성의 약속으로 인해 비롯된 욕망 충동은 타자적이다. 그리고 여성의 부모나 남성 인물의 스승이 개입하여 여성의 욕망을 알리고 여성의 욕망을 저지하는 특징이 드러난다.
여성형 상사뱀 설화에서 여성 욕망이 변화하여 뱀의 신체로 드러났을 때 여성의 욕망을 인정하고 신체적 관계 맺기를 한 경우를 ‘인정과 수용형’, 신체적 관계를 맺으나 자신의 안위를 위해 욕망을 수용한 경우를 ‘경계와 수용형’, 여성 욕망에 대해 완강하게 거부한 경우를 ‘거부와 무시형’으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 이 분류가 남성의 여성 욕망 수용성에 따른 것이라면 다음 장에서는 여성 욕망을 젠더적 관점에서 남성성과 어떤 연관성을 지니는지 살펴보고자 한다.
R.W. 코넬(2010)은 『남성성/들』에서 남성성을 사회생물학적 개념에서 벗어나 ‘사회적 실천의 구조로서 젠더’로 바라보았으며, 남녀 사이의 신체적, 기질적 차이가 문화를 통해서 보편적 남성 지배로 증폭된다고 보았다. 즉, 남성 인물들의 남성성을 젠더의 관점에서 보면 당대 남성 인물을 바라보는 민중적 시각에 대한 새로운 해석을 얻을 수 있다.
남성성들 사이의 역학 관계에 따라 네 가지 유형으로 나누어 보고자 한다. 헤게모니적 남성성, 종속적 남성성, 공모적 남성성, 주변부적 남성성으로 드러나는데 <상사뱀> 설화를 구전하는 민중들의 태도를 보면 헤게모니적 남성에 대한 파괴적 응징, 즉 남성의 가문, 남성의 학문적 위계, 남성의 신체를 모두 장악하여 죽음으로 끝을 낸다. 종속적 남성은 존재의 흔적마저 지워버리는 것으로 경고를 하고 있으며. 주변부적 남성에 대해 파국을 남성이 조력하는 경우를 보이고 있다. 공모적 남성성은 가문의 번성과 후손의 출세까지 보장하고 있다.

영어초록

This study focused on the ways that women's desire was treated in the Sangsa Snake tales, some of Korea's stories transmitted through generations. The tales present a story in which love desire and the realization patterns of desire have direct connections with gender in that its premise is love between man and woman. Sangsa Snake tales have an ending narrative of obsessive love, refused love, transformation driven by desire, and death or sublimation, telling stories that exhibit the sexual desire of man and woman most directly and show extreme situations of desire through the material of transformation.
Complete Works of Korean Oral Literature includes total 22 Sangsa Snake tales that have been transmitted and recorded. They consist of five male-pattern Sangsa tales, in which men admire a woman and become a Sangsa snake, and 17 female-pattern Sangsa tales, in which women admire a man and become a Sangsa snake. The fact that female-pattern Sangsa tales are twice as many as male-pattern ones shows the subversive attribute of oral literature along with the transmission of the tales in the form of oral literature in a feudal society where women's desire was a taboo.
Male Sangsa snakes develop desire one-sidedly and unleash it physically. Their all-out contact and physical domination end in the death of women that they have desire for. In female Sangsa snake tales, female characters are from all classes of society including nobility, common people, and the lowest class. Men that they have desire for are all nobility except for two cases. Their impulse of craving driven by their sleeping or promise with men is other-like. Their parents or male teachers make an intervention to let their desire known and block their desire.
In female Sangsa snake tales, men's reactions to women's desire are categorized into three types: the type of "recognition and acceptance" involves men recognizing women's desire and making physical relations with them when women's desire is changed into a snake body; the type of "caution and acceptance" involves men making physical relations with women and accepting women's desire for their safety; and the type of "refusal and disregard" involves men persistently rejecting women's desire. This classification is based on the acceptance of desire. A look at the masculinity of male characters from the gender perspective can provide a new interpretation of a popular viewpoint of male characters those days.
In her Men and Masculinities(2010), R. W. Connell examined masculinity in the viewpoint of "gender as a structure of social practice" instead of the old sociobiological concept and argued that physical and temperamental differences between man and woman are amplified into universal male dominance through culture. Masculinity is classified into four types of hegemonic, subordinated, complicit and marginalized masculinity according to dynamic relations among masculinities. Based on the attitudes of people responsible for the oral transmission of Sangsa Snake tales, there is destructive punishment for hegemonic masculinity. That is, men's families, academic hierarchies, and bodies are all dominated, which leads to their death. Subordinated masculinity gets a warning that even the traces of men's existence will be erased. Marginalized masculinity presents cases in which men help in driving other men toward collapse. Complicit masculinity secures the prosperity of men's families and even the success of their posterity.
