이 연구는 서울공예박물관 소장 <백자청화파초국화문항아리>(서울시 유형문화재)에 표기된 명문을 분석하여 명문의 표기 시점인 제작 하한 시기를 파악하는 것에 목적을 두고 있다. 서울공예박물관 소장 <백자청화파초국화문항아리>는 저부에 ‘을ᄉᆞ ᄌᆞ궁이’이라는 명문이 점각(點刻)으로 표기되어 있다. 명문은 간지, 그릇이 속한 장소, 수량의 조합으로 <백자청화파초국화문항아리>가 을사년 이후 자궁에 속한 2쌍의 항아리 가운데 하나임을 명기하고 있다. 명문 가운데 ‘을사’라는 간지는 그릇이 해당 소속처의 재산이 된 해를 나타내는 것이므로 명문이 새겨진 그릇의 제작 하한 시기이기도 하다. 그러나 간지 명문은 매 60년마다 반복되는 특성 때문에 시기를 특정하는데 종종 이견과 논란의 여지를 남긴다. 간지와 함께 <백자청화파초국화문항아리>에 표기된 ‘자궁’은 그릇의 소속처로써 을사년을 특정할 수 있는 근거가 된다. 조선 후기 왕실의 상황을 감안할 때 명문의 자궁은 정조(正祖)의 생모(生母) 혜경궁(惠慶宮)을 지칭하는 것으로 이해할 수 있으며, 을사년은 1785년(정조 9)으로 파악하는 것이 적절하다.
명문 내용 해석을 통해 해당 유물이 속했던 장소와 명문 표기 및 제작 하한 시기를 확보한 <백자청화파초국화문항아리>는 상대적으로 편년 자료가 부족한 18세기 후반 분원리 시기 관요 백자의 면모를 파악할 수 있는 중요한 유물이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the inscriptions marked in the blue and white porcelain jar with banana and chrysanthemum pattern of the Seoul Museum of Craft Art(SeMoCa), which was recently designated as a tangible cultural heritage in Seoul city, to determine the timing of the inscription and the lower limit of production time.
The Blue and white porcelain jar with banana and chrysanthemum pattern, one of main collection of the Seoul Museum of Craft Art, has the inscription ‘을ᄉᆞ ᄌᆞ궁이’ etched on the bottom as dots. The inscription consists of the sexagenary cycle(干支), the place where the porcelain belongs and quantity. In addition the contents of the inscription can be interpreted as one of the two pairs of jars belonging to the Jagung palace in Eulsa year.
The sexagenary cycle included in the inscription represents the year when the porcelain became the property of the place where the porcelain belongs. Therefore, the sexagenary cycle is an important basis for determining when a porcelain with inscription was actually used. Among the inscription, sexagenary cycle represents the year in which the jar became the property of the place, so it is also the lower limit of the production time of the jar with the inscription on it.
On the other hand, the sexagenary cycle inscription is always divided and controversial in specifying the timing due to the characteristics of the sexagenary cycle, which is repeated every 60 years.
The ‘Jagung(ᄌᆞ궁)’, which is the place of use marked with the sexagenary cycle of ‘Eulsa(을ᄉᆞ)’ in the Blue and white porcelain jar with banana and chrysanthemum pattern of SeMoCa, can be the basis for specifying the Eulsa Year.
Considering the situation of the royal family in the late Joseon Dynasty, it can be understood that the inscription ‘Jagung(ᄌᆞ궁)’ refers to King Jeongjo’s biological mother, Hyegyeonggung and her Palace itself. If so, Eulsa(을ᄉᆞ) year can be identified as 1785(9th year of King Jeongjo).
The Blue and white porcelain jar with banana and chrysanthemum pattern, which can be recognized as a porcelain located in Jagyeongjeon Hall(慈慶殿), the residence of Hyegyeonggung, is a measure of the status and level of blue and white porcelain placed around the king's mother in the fourth quarter of the 18th century.
