이 글은 유튜브 채널 ‘피식대학’의 <05학번이즈백>을 중심으로 유튜브 시대 드라마 콘텐츠의 변화에 대해 논하고자 한다. 유튜브의 다른 코미디 채널들이 단편 영상을 기반으로 한 스케치 코미디에 집중했던 것과 달리 ‘피식대학’은 대본에 기반하여 특정 캐릭터를 형성함으로 허구적 세계관을 연결시키는 데 집중한다. 각각의 캐릭터들은 채널 안에서 여러 에피소드에 출연하며 중첩된 서사를 부여받는 것으로 극적 특성을 구현해낸다는 점에서 ‘피식대학’만의 고유한 콘텐츠를 형성해낸다. 그 중에서도 <05학번이즈백>은 기존 롱폼 콘텐츠에서 보기 어려운 장르 간의 융합과 재구성, 서사의 분절, 캐릭터의 공유 등을 지속적인 시리즈 형태의 숏폼 콘텐츠로 구현한다는 점에서 독특한 특성을 갖는다. 이 글은 유튜브 채널 ‘피식대학’의 <05학번이즈백>을 중심으로 생산자와 소비자가 ‘감정화’와 ‘놀이’를 통해 관계를 맺고 이를 통해 재현되는 특정한 ‘감성’을 확인함으로써 유튜브 시대 드라마의 생산과 소비에 대해 논의하고자 한다.
이와 관련하여 본고는 감정과 놀이라는 두 가지 키워드를 놓고 드라마 소비의 변화에 대해서 짚어보고자 했다. 1인미디어적 특성을 중심으로 제작되던 유튜브의 숏폼 콘텐츠는 유튜브의 수익모델 확보에 따라 기성 미디어의 관습을 적극적으로 받아들이는 한편 고유한 인터페이스를 확보해나가며 오리지널 콘텐츠의 서사와 형식을 구성해나갔다. 이 과정에서 유튜브의 이용자들은 데이터베이스를 통해 큐레이터와 아카이비스트로서의 역할을 수행하여 콘텐츠의 생산에 참여한다는 환상을 경험하게 된다. 따라서 잘 만들어진 서사에 대한 욕망보다는 데이터베이스 구축에 참여하여 분절된 서사를 개인화된 방식으로 전유하려는 욕망이 더 강조되는 것이다. 이에 따라 부캐와 패러디를 통한 놀이적 속성은 숏폼 콘텐츠의 주된 미학적 특징으로 부각하게 된다. 이를 증폭시키는 것은 2차 창작을 통해 고정된 알고리즘에 개입하려는 시청자들의 적극적인 참여다. 시청자들은 원 콘텐츠와 상관없이 세계관을 확장시키고 캐릭터의 생산과 소비에 능동적으로 개입하려는 욕망을 알고리즘에의 참여를 통해 구현하려 하는 것이다. 같은 맥락에서 <05학번이즈백>은 2000년대를 드라마타이즈화하여 즉각적인 공감을 통해 감성의 공동체를 형성한다. 감정의 과잉과 빈곤한 이미지를 통해 재현되는 2000년대는 레트로라는 특정한 감성의 재현과 연결되어 시청자들의 기억과 정서가 부재함에도 불구하고 막연한 그리움을 느끼게 만드는 극적 전략을 수행하고 있다고 볼 수 있다.
기성 미디어의 수용자 입장에서는 잘 짜여진 서사, 수준 높은 촬영기술, 스타시스템 등이 드라마를 즐기고 몰입하는 주요한 요소였다. 반면 유튜브에서는 느슨한 서사, 빈곤한 이미지, 과잉되고 조악한 캐릭터 등이 드라마를 구성하는 요소로 활용된다. 이는 자본과 기술의 차이에서 기인하는 것이기도 하지만 플랫폼에 최적화된 형태로 극을 전개시키기 위한 전략적 결과로도 볼 수 있다. 상호작용을 통해 알고리즘에 개입하고 스스로 재미를 찾으며 감성을 전유하고 재구성하려는 욕망이 드라마라는 양식을 통해 강화된다는 점은 분명 기억할 필요가 있다. 이는 유튜브 시대에 드라마라는 예술 양식의 수용에 대한 또 다른 국면을 제시하는 것일지도 모르기 때문이다.

This article discusses the evolution of drama content in the Youtube era, focusing on the channel "Psick University" and its series <05 is back>. Unlike other comedy channels on Youtube that emphasize sketch comedy through short, standalone videos, "Psick University" centers on building fictional worlds by developing characters based on detailed scripts. These characters appear across multiple episodes, creating interconnected narratives and establishing the channel's distinctive content style. Among its productions, <05 is back> possesses unique characteristics by incorporating genre fusion and reconfiguration, narrative fragmentation, and character sharing—elements rarely seen in traditional long-form content—into a continuous series of short-form videos.
This article aims to explore how the relationship between creators and consumers in the Youtube era forms through "emotionalization" and "play", focusing on the consumption of specific "sensibilities" recreated in this context. The study examines changes in drama consumption using two key concepts: emotion and play. While early short-form content on YouTube reflected the traits of individual-driven media, the platform has increasingly adopted the conventions of traditional media to establish sustainable revenue models. Simultaneously, it has developed original storytelling and formats tailored to its unique interface.
In this environment, Youtube users take on roles as curators and archivists, actively participating in content production, or at least experiencing the illusion of doing so. Consequently, the desire to engage in constructing a database often outweighs the desire for a polished, linear narrative. This shift highlights the playful attributes of short-form content, particularly through the use of alternate personas and parody. Viewer engagement in second-hand creations amplifies this dynamic, as audiences actively interact with fixed algorithms to expand the narrative world and participate in character creation and consumption.
<05 is back> exemplifies this phenomenon by dramatizing the early 2000s to create a communal sensibility based on instant relatability. The representation of this era—marked by an excess of emotion and sparse visuals—evokes a vague sense of nostalgia, even for viewers who lack direct memories of it. This is a dramatic strategy tied to the reproduction of retro sensibilities, connecting with viewers’ emotions and recollections.
From the perspective of traditional media consumers, tightly constructed narratives, high production values, and star-driven systems have traditionally been key to enjoying and immersing in dramas. Conversely, on YouTube, loose narratives, low-quality visuals, and exaggerated, sometimes crude characters form the backbone of drama creation. While these differences partially stem from disparities in capital and technology, they also represent strategic decisions to optimize storytelling for the platform. The desire to interact with algorithms, find enjoyment through personal effort, and appropriate and reconstruct sensibilities underscores a shift in the consumption of drama as an art form.
Ultimately, this suggests that the Youtube era introduces a new dimension to how dramas are received, reshaping their artistic framework and cultural relevance.
