초록

본고는 시암是菴 배길기裵吉基(1917～1999)의 서예미에 대하여 고찰함으로써 그의 서예 위상을 제고하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구를 위해 『시암 배길기 서집』에 수록된 작품 가운데 서체별로 대표작을 발췌하여 분석하고, 문장내용을 바탕으로 작가와 연관시켜 문학적인 해석을 겸하였다. 시암의 작품에 내재된 서예미는 갑골문甲骨文을 ‘상형미象形美’로, 전서篆書를 ‘내함미內含美’로, 예서隸書를 ‘담박미澹泊美’로, 해서楷書를 ‘정연미整然美’로, 행서行書를 ‘고결미高潔美’로, 초서草書를 ‘청아미淸雅美’로, 전각篆刻을 ‘포치미布置美’로 설정하여 품칙을 분류하였다.
시암의 갑골문은 중봉中鋒으로 운필하여 선질線質에 중량감을 주었고, 비백飛白을 살려 생동감을 발휘하였으며, 은은한 발묵潑墨을 통해 시각적으로 평온함을 유도하여 ‘상형미’를 발현시켰다. 전서는 주대周代의 「석고문石鼓文」을 비롯하여 진대秦代의 소전小篆과 한대漢代 허신許愼의 『설문해자說文解字』를 거쳐 청대淸代의 오창석吳昌碩에 이르기까지 다양하게 박섭하여 독창적인 예술세계를 구축하였다. 전서는 기세가 필획 가운데 응축된 ‘내함미’를 지닌 것을 특징이다. 예서는 「장천비張遷碑」․「조전비曹全碑」․「예기비禮記碑」 등 주로 분예分隸를 즐겨 썼는데 맑고 담담한 ‘담박미’를 지니고 있다. 해서는 북위해서北魏楷書와 당해서唐楷書를 두루 학습하였지만, 특히 당해서 가운데 구양순歐陽詢과 안진경顔眞卿의 해서에 비중을 두었으며, 단정한 ‘정연미’가 두드러진다. 행서는 주로 동진東晉의 왕희지王羲之를 근간으로 하면서, 안진경의 행서를 가미하였다. 그의 행서에서는 격조 높고 청결한 ‘고결미’가 유연하게 풍겨 나오고 있다. 초서는 왕희지의 「십칠첩十七帖」과 「척독집尺牘集」을 근골筋骨로 삼으면서, 당唐의 손과정孫過庭 이하 청대淸代에 이르기까지 제비첩諸碑帖을 혈육血肉으로 삼았다. 그의 초서에는 맑고 우아한 ‘청아미’가 분출되고 있다. 전각은 계백당흑計白當黑이 원만하게 배치되어 ‘포치미’가 농후한데, 이는 평생 동안 전서에 심혈을 기울인 결과물로 여겨진다.
이상과 같이 시암은 각 서체는 물론 전각에 이르기까지 평생을 절차탁마하여 우수한 예술세계를 형성하였다. 특히 그 가운데 전서 분야에서는 한국 서예사에서 탁월하고 개성적인 일가一家를 성취하였다.

영어초록

This study aims to enhance the stature of Siam Bae Gil-gi (1917～1999) as a calligrapher by examining calligraphic beauty of his works. For the research, this study extracts and analyzes representative works in different calligraphic styles among ones included in Siam Bae Gil-gi Collection and interprets them in a literary manner with interrelationship of the calligrapher based on contents of the works. Calligraphic beauty inherent in Siam’s works is classified as ‘hieroglyphic beauty’ in oracle bone inscriptions(甲骨文); ‘implicative beauty’ in Zhuanshu(篆書, the most complicated and cursive calligraphic style); ‘plain beauty’ in Lishu (隸書, a calligraphic style that Zhuanshu’s complexity is omitted); ‘orderly beauty’ in Kaishu(楷書, a square style); ‘noble beauty’ in Xingshu(行書, a semi-cursive style); ‘elegant beauty’ in Caoshu(草書, a cursive style) and; ‘configurational beauty’ in seal engraving(篆刻).
His oracle bone inscriptions were written with Jungbong(中鋒, a calligraphic technique to keep the tip of a brush at the center all the time) to give quality of lines a sense of weight, express liveliness with vivid Feibai(飛白, a wavering style) and demonstrate ‘hieroglyphic beauty’ with visual tranquility through subdued Pomo(潑墨, a technique to pour or spray ink). In terms of Zhuanshu, he established his unique world of art through extensive reading such as Shihuwen(石鼓文) in Zhou Dynasty, Xiaozhuan(小篆) in Qin Dynasty, Shuowenjiezi(說文解字) by Xushen in Han Dynasty and works of Wu Changshuo in Qing Dynasty. Zhuanshu is characterized by ‘implicative beauty’ in which the energy is condensed at the center of brush strokes. In Lishu, he frequently adopts Fenli(分隸, a calligraphic style inheriting that of Earlier Han) such as Zhangqianbei(張遷碑), Caoquanbei(曹全碑), Lijibei (禮記碑) and they are of clear and calm ‘plain beauty.’ As to Kaishu, he extensively studied Kaishu of Northern Wei Dynasty and that of Tang Dynasty and among Kaishu works of Tang Dynasty, he particularly put weight on Quyangxun(歐陽詢) and Yanzhenqing(顔眞卿) and the tidy ‘orderly beauty’ stands out in his works. In Xingshu, he added Xingshu works of Yanzhenqing on the basis of Wangxizhi(王羲之) in Dong Jin Dynasty. His Xingshu works are of profound and pure ‘noble beauty.’ Regarding Caoshu, Shiqitie(十七帖) and Chiduji(尺牘集) of Wangxizhi were his foundation and the entire rubbings(碑帖) by Sunguoting(孫過庭) in Tang Dynasty and descendants in Qing Dynasty served as exteriority. His Caoshu gives off clear ‘elegant beauty.’ On his seal engraving, Jibaidanghei(計白當黑, arranging brush strokes by figuring out empty space) is properly arranged and ‘configurational beauty’ is rich, which is considered as a fruit after he devoted himself to Zhuanshu for his entire life.
As shown above, Siam formed a superb world of art with constant study and improvement in seal engraving as well as in different calligraphic styles. Among them, he achieved eminent and characterful mastery in the area of Zhuanshu throughout history of Korean calligraphy.
