사이배슬론에서 포스트휴먼 장애의 특성 (Characteristics of Post-human Disability in the Cybathlon)

초록

‘장애’가 ‘할 수 없음’을 의미한다면, 이는 신체 손상에 의한 혐오와 차별을 가시화하는 사회적 표상이 될 것이다. 사회적 모델의 실천적 논의들은 의료 모델을 비판하고 그것이 초래한 부정적 상황을 극복하기 위해 노력해왔다. 다른 한편 제3의 입장은 신체 손상의 의미를 축소한 대신, 장애의 사회성을 구명한 사회 모델을 비판한다. 이러한 입장에서 사이배슬론은 신체 손상과 보충 기술의 중요성에 주목하게 한다. 국제대회인 사이배슬론은 척수 손상으로 신체 기능이 저하되거나 소멸된 사람의 자립을 위해 개입하는 감각 인터페이스, 인공지능, 로봇과학기술 등의 보충 기술들을 경쟁한다.
사이배슬론은 재활의학 담론을 배경으로 생명정치를 재현한다. 특히 그것은 생명의료윤리의 자율성을 손상된 신체의 기능적 자율성으로 대체한다. 이 경우 그것은 자연적 신체의 원본성을 회복하려는 의료 모델과 달리 신체 손상을 긍정하면서, 동시에 기술적 보충을 통해 손상을 극복하려 한다는 점에서 신체 손상에 대한 이중성을 지닌다. 또한 그것은 올림픽처럼 자연적 신체 능력의 고도화를 노리는 패럴림픽과 구별된다. 그것은 보충 기술들의 경쟁이며, 거기서 장애인의 자율성은 보충 기술의 제어 능력 문제이다.
그런데 사이배슬론에서의 자율성은 신체가 손상된 인간과 보충 기계 사이의 불가피한 의존 관계를 은폐한다. 반면 이러한 자율성은 변형된 신체, 상호의존성, 개체화, 관계 존재론의 입장을 통해 비판된다. 손상된 신체는 실체화된 존재가 아니라 타자와 행위하고 관계함으로써 가변성을 지닌 변형된 신체이다. 이러한 변형, 의존, 관계의 존재론적 지평은 손상된 신체와 접속한 보충 기계의 관계를 긍정하며 장애를 포스트휴먼의 관점에서 설명한다.

영어초록

If ‘disability’ means ‘cannot do’, it will be a social representation that visualizes disgust and discrimination caused by the impaired body(physical damage). Practical discussions of social models have criticized the medical model and worked hard to overcome the negative situations it has brought. On the other hand, the third model of disability criticizes the model that has explored the sociality of disability, instead of reducing the meaning of the impaired body. From this standpoint of view, Cybathlon draws attention to the importance of the body-impairment and prosthetic techniques. Cybathlon as an international competition, competes with recent advanced prosthetic technologies such as sensory interfaces, artificial intelligence, and robotics that intervene to help the independence of a person whose physical function has deteriorated or disappeared due to spinal cord injury.
Cybathlon reproduces the biopolitics with the background of the discourse on rehabilitation medicine. In particular, it replaces the autonomy of biomedical ethics with the functional autonomy of the impaired body. In this case, unlike the medical model to restore the originality of the natural body, Cybathlon has a duality of the impairment in that it affirms the impaired body and at the same time tries to overcome the impairment through technical prosthetics. It is also distinguished from the Paralympics, which aim to improve the natural physical abilities of the disabled players like the Olympics. It is a competition of prosthetic technologies, where the autonomy of the disabled is a matter of the ability to control them.
However, autonomy in Cybathlon veils the inevitable dependence between the impaired human and non-human, prosthetic machines. On the other hand, this autonomy is criticized through the position of a transformed body, interdependence, individualization, and the relational ontology. The impaired body is not an substantialized being, but a transformed body with variability by interacting and related to others. This ontological horizon of trans-corporeality, dependence, and relationship affirms the relationship between the impaired body and the connected prosthetic machines, and explain the disability from a post-human perspective.
