초록

재난투어는 전쟁이나 대학살처럼 비극적인 참사의 현장이나 대규모 재난 재해가 일어났던 장소를 돌아보며 교훈을 얻는 여행이다. 근대화의 결과가 글로벌 위험사회로의 귀결이라는 역설적인 상황이 되면서 위험이 상품화되고 재난의 장소가 새로운 관광목적지로 부상한다.
본고는 위험사회 혹은 액체근대에 일상화된 재난이 발생한 장소를 여행하는 작품에 나타난 재난의 양상과 인물이 그 장소와의 교감을 통해 발생하는 정동을 살피고, 나아가 텍스트가 제기하는 재난의 윤리를 밝히고자 한다.
『밤의 여행자들』에서 해고의 위기에 처한 요나는 재난여행 상품을 점검하기 위해 무이로 향한다. 무이는 폴로 상징되는 글로벌 자본주의에 의해 철저하게 재난 관광지로 구성된 장소이다. 요나는 현지인 럭과의 만남을 통해 무이의 진정한 장소성을 경험한다. ‘맹그로브숲’으로 대표되는 원주민이 거주하는 이 생태적인 장소는 글로벌 위험사회의 위험과 기후위기의 공포에 대한 대안공간으로서 기능한다. 하지만 작품 말미에 요나의 죽음마저 폴이 기획한 인공 재난상품의 한 요소가 되면서 「밤의 여행자들」은 글로벌 자본의 폭력성을 다시 한번 입증한다.
「므레모사」에서 유안은 유독성 화학물질 유출사고로 한때 봉쇄되었던 므레모사를 관광한다. 므레모사의 회복과 재건을 기대하는 관광객들의 시선은 장애를 극복하고 재기에 성공한 유안을 통해 감동을 얻고자 하는 주변의 기대와 일치한다. 이는 온갖 위험과 공포가 개인화되면서 더욱 강요받는 액체근대의 자기계발 문화를 반영한다. 하지만 유안은 환지통과 의족에 의한 통증이 없는 세계, 정상성에 대한 집착도 없는 세계를 꿈꾼다. 따라서 도약과 정지의 위계가 전도된, 므레모사의 진정한 장소성을 발견하자 그곳에 남기로 한다. 므레모사를 유토피아로 전유하는 유안의 모습은 개인에게 부과된 위험의 개인화가 역설적으로 개인을 얼마나 불안하고 고통스러운 주체로 만드는가를 보여준다.
「재해지역 투어버스」에서 ‘나’는 카트리나가 발생한 뉴올리언스를 여행하면서 한국의 재난을 떠올리는데, 이는 기후위기와 산업재해 그리고 도시 재개발로 인한 참사 등이 파편화된 이미지로 제시된다. 그 중에서 광우병 촛불시위 광장에서 방언처럼 들렸던 대중의 함성으로부터 촉발된 정동은 뉴올리언즈 재난지역의 장소성과 연결되어 카트리나의 피해를 가장 크게 입은 흑인들의 분노와 고통에 공감하는 정동으로 확장된다. 이러한 재난의 정동은 불안과 불확실성의 위험사회에 균열을 내고 위험을 통제하는 지배적인 정동을 탈영토화하는 생성적인 힘이 될 수 있다.
이상으로 살펴봤듯이 재난 투어서사는 재난이 발생한 장소와의 교감을 통해 글로벌 위험과 파국에 대한 성찰을 도모한다. 파국으로 인한 고통을 목격하고 나아가 타자와 연대하고 공감하는 정동을 생성하는데, 여기서 재난의 정치적 가능성을 발견할 수 있다. 이는 바로 타자에 대한 공감과 책임이 글로벌 위험사회의 위험을 극복할 수 있는 재난의 윤리라는 것을 증언한다.

영어초록

Disaster tourism offers a chance to travel to a scene where a tragic disaster happened such as a war and massacre or a large-scale catastrophic disaster took place and get a lesson from the travel. In a paradoxical situation where the outcome of modernization results in a global risk society, danger is commercialized with disaster places emerging as new tourist destinations.
This study aims to examine disaster patterns in works where characters take a trip to places where routinized disasters happened in a risky society or liquid modernity along with the affect between characters and their communion with such places, further shedding light on the ethics of disasters raised by the texts.
In The Disaster Tourist, Yona at risk of being dismissed from her work heads for Mui to check a disaster tour package. Mui has been thoroughly created as a disaster tourist destination by global capitalism represented by Paul. She experiences true placeness through her encounter with a local named Luck. This ecological place resided by natives and represented by the “mangrove forest” functions as an alternative space against the danger of the global risk society and the horror of the climate crisis. At the end of the work, however, even Yona’s death becomes an element of the manmade disaster tour package planned by Paul. The Disaster Tourist once again testifies to the violence of global capital.
In Mremosa, Yuan goes sightseeing to Mremosa which was once under blockade after the leakage of a toxic chemical. The viewpoint of tourists expecting the restoration and reconstruction of Mremosa matches the expectation of people around her who wish to be moved by her case of overcoming her disability and succeeding in a comeback. This reflects the self-development culture of liquid modernity in which people are further forced by the personalization of all kinds of risk and terror. Yuan, however, dreams of a world free of phantom limb pain, the pain caused by a prosthetic leg, and obsession with normalcy. She thus decides to remain in Mremosa after discovering its true placeness in which the hierarchy of leap and suspension is overturned. The way that she appropriates Mremosa as a utopia shows how the personalization of risk imposed on individuals paradoxically turn individuals into anxious and painful subjects.
In The Tour Bus to a Disaster Area, “I” travel to New Orleans hit by Hurricane Katrina and think of disasters that affected South Korea. The novel presents the climate crisis, industrial disasters, and disasters due to urban redevelopment in fragmented images. The affect triggered by the roar of the public heard like a dialect at the square where they held a candlelight vigil against meat infected with the mad cow disease expands into the affect of empathize with the anger and pain of black people who suffered the heaviest damage from Hurricane Katrina, being connected to the placeness of disaster areas in New Orleans. Such affect of disaster can be the generative force to deterritorialize the dominant affect that causes a crack in the risk society of anxiety and uncertainty and control danger.
As these stories show, A disaster tour narrative promotes a self-examination of global risks and catastrophes through communion with places where disasters struck. People witness suffering due to a catastrophe and further create the affect of banding together and sympathizing with others. Here, one can discover the political possibilities of a disaster. This testifies that sympathy and responsibility for others is the ethics of disasters to overcome risks in the global risk society.
