조선시대 전통깃발의 특징에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of the Korean Traditional Flag in the Chosun Dynasty)

초록

우리의 전통깃발은 예로부터 전해오는 민족적인 신앙이나 미의식의 반영으로 우리 전통사회의 생활저변에 자리 잡고 있으며, 다양한 기능과 목적으로 사용되었다. 예를 들면 군대에서 사용했던 군기, 왕실의 노부 때 사용하였던 의장기, 무속이나 신앙으로서의 서낭기, 동제를 지내거나 두레 때 마을의 상징으로 사용한 농기, 어부들의 풍어 기원을 위한 풍어제에 쓰인서낭기와 봉기, 제례에 사용된 만장 등의 사용을 볼수 있다. 또한 깃발은 현대 미술에서 대규모 깃발의형태로 야외 깃발 전시를 제시하여 새로운 예술의 형태로 나타나고 있다.
본 연구는 우리의 전통깃발에 대한 이론적 고찰과조형적 특성에 대한 연구를 통하여 전통깃발이 가지고 있는 문화적, 예술적 가치를 고찰하여 전통의 재발견과 함께 새로운 예술적 가치를 가진 깃발 디자인으로 발전할 수 있는 자료를 제공하는데 그 연구 목적이 있다.
연구 방법은 조선시대이후의 우리의 전통깃발에 대한 문헌 및 국내외 단행본, 연구논문, 작품사진 등의연구 자료를 통하여 문헌 고찰하였고, 전통깃발에 대한 조형적 특징들을 분석하기 위하여 조선시대이후의전통깃발에 나타나는 작품사진과 국내 잡지, 인터넷자료 등과 함께 살펴보았다.
연구 결과는 우리의 전통깃발은 우리의 문화에 영향을 준 모든 사상들이 복합적으로 담겨있는 하나의상징이며 언어의 은유적 표현이다. 깃발에 나타나는색상은 주로 우리나라 전통색채 관념인 음양오행의영향을 받아 오방색을 사용하였으며, 문양에는 사신을비롯하여 영수, 십이지신 등의 동물문, 천상문, 신인문, 부적문 등 다양하게 나타난다. 이러한 깃발에 나타나는 문양들의 의미와 상징 그리고 그 사상적 배경은 매우 의미가 크며 다양하다고 볼 수 있다.
따라서 깃발은 고대인의 토속적 민간신앙이 바탕이되고, 그것이 시대에 따라 변천되면서 동양철학과 전통적 관념이 함께 어우러져 고유한 상징성을 부여한것으로 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The Korean traditional flag, reflecting its long-standing national religions or its sense of aesthetics, has been underlying in the traditional society and has been used for a variety of functions and purposes.
For example, there are military flags, ceremonial flags for royal procession, tutelary deity flags for shamanistic or religious use, farmers’ flags for community rituals or farmers’cooperative groups, local god flags or oriental phoenix flags for fishermen’s rituals for a big catch, funeral streamers in the memorial service. Flags also emerged as a new modern art form as witnessed in a display of a massive array of flags in the field.
Through the theoretical understanding and the research on the formative characteristics on the Korean traditional flags, this study will examine the cultural and artistic values, which, along the rediscovery of tradition, will help develop the culture of flags with the new artistic values.
The method of research is to examine literatures,books published in and out of the country, research paper, and photographs on the Korean traditional flags from the Chosun Dynasty in the Korean Peninsula.
To study the formative characteristics, pictures and photographs, domestic academic journals, and materials from the Internet on the traditional flags from the Chosun Dynasty in the Korean Peninsula (14C∼20C) were analyzed.
The result of this study is that the Korean traditional flag is a metaphorical expression of the language and a symbol in which the combination of all the thoughts that have influenced our culture resided.
Due to the influence of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements theory, which Korean traditional colors were relie upon, five directional colors (blue, red,and yellow, plus white and black) were used for the flags. Flag patterns include animal patterns such as the four-animal saints (gods), auspicious animals,the zodiac animals, astronomical patterns, Taoist hermit patterns related to Taoist thoughts, and amulet patterns. The meanings and symbols, and the ideological background that can be seen in a number of patterns of flags are diverse and of great significance.
Therefore, the flags were based on the ancient folk beliefs, and, as time went by, this had been harmonized with Eastern philosophies or the traditional notions, which gives a unique symbolism to the Korean traditional flags.
