야스쿠니신사(靖国神社)와 천황제 이데올로기 - 야스쿠니의 천황중심 사상과 반사회세력과의 연관성을 중심으로 - (The Yasukuni Shrine and Japanese Emperor System Ideology)

초록

본고는 야스쿠니신사와 천황제 이데올로기의 관련성을 천황과 일본 민중들과의 관계를 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 야스쿠니신사는 천황과 신사와 군을 연결한 특이한 종교시설로 단순한 추도․위령의 시설이 아니라 천황을 위해서 싸워 전사를 한 국민을 칭찬하는 현창의 장이다. 따라서 천황을 위해 목숨을 바친 일본국민이라면 신분, 직업, 성별 등에 관계없이 제사지낸다는 의미에서 야스쿠니신사는 일본인들의 입장에서 보면 민주적이고 평등한 종교시설이라고 할 수 있다.
현재의 8월 15일 종전기념일의 야스쿠니신사의 풍경을 보면, 삐라를 나눠주고 확성기로 현 정권과 사회에 대한 불만을 토로하는 사람들이 야스쿠니신사 주변을 둘러싸고 있는 등, 야스쿠니를 지탱하고 있는 에너지는 유족을 중심으로 한 단순한 참배객만이 아니라, 현재의 일본정부의 정책에 불만이 있거나 사회에 대해 불안을 느끼고 있는 세력이 집결하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.
이와 같은 종전기념일의 야스쿠니의 반체제적이고 반사회적인 불온한 공기는 이전부터 이어져온 천황과 민중의 특수한 관계에 바탕을 두고 있다고 할 수 있다. 야스쿠니신사는 근대일본에서 건립되었지만, 역사적으로는 권력쟁취를 위하여 일본사회의 하층부의 에너지를 이용한 천황과 사회의 중심부에서 탈락하여 주변부로 전락한 반체제적인 사상을 지닌 민중들이 천황이라는 대의명분을 통하여 결집하는 일본만의 독특한 권력구조의 논리가 야스쿠니신사를 지탱하는 근본사상이라 할 수 있다. 막말(幕末)에 막부를 타도하고 천황을 옹립하는 운동을 전개한 존왕양이의 지사들이 내전에서 전사한 사람들을 제사지낸 초혼제가 야스쿠니신사의 기원이 되었다는 점은 야스쿠니신사가 천황의 이데올로기적 종교적 권위와 밀접한 관련을 가진 시설이라는 점을 말해 주고 있다.

영어초록

This article looks into the connections between the Yasukuni shrine and Japanese Emperor system ideology, focusing mainly on the relationship between the Japanese Emperor and Japanese people. The Yasukuni shrine is a peculiar religious facility that connects the Japanese Emperor with the shrine and the military and is not a simple memorial where people come to honor and pray for the repose of the dead. Instead it was built to praise those who fought and died for the Japanese Emperor. In the sense that memorial services at the shrine are held for all the Japanese who sacrificed their lives for the Japanese Emperor, regardless of their status, occupation and gender, the Yasukuni shrine is a democratic religious facility where all are equal in the eyes of the Japanese.
If we viewed the surroundings of the Yasukuni shrine on the just passed August 15th, the anniversary of the end of World War II, we would see some people at the Yasukuni shrine expressing their complaints about the present administration and society with megaphones while others distributed flyers. This demonstrates that the energy which supports Yasukuni is not provided only by the families of the deceased honored there but also by those wishing to voice their dissatisfaction with Japanese current affairs.
Such a rebellious and anti-government atmosphere at Yasukuni on the anniversary of the end of World War II can be said to have its foundation in the special relationship between the Japanese Emperor and the public. The Yasukuni shrine was constructed in modern Japan and is supported by the logic of the peculiar power structure of Japan that unites those with rebellious ideologies and those who have dropped out of society or are on its peripheries with the Japanese Emperor and his leadership. The origins of the shrine lay in the memorial service for the civil war dead which was carried out by patriots who respected the Emperor, aimed to repel foreign intruders and developed the movement to overthrow the bakufu, thus helping the Japanese Emperor take the throne. It is such a history that invests the Yasukuni shrine with the symbolic meanings and power to connect the Japanese Emperor’s ideological religious authority with the people.
