재담과 만담, ‘비-의미’와 ‘진실’의 형식 - 박춘재와 신불출을 중심으로 - (Jaedam(才談) and Mandam(漫談), Art of ‘Non-meaning’ and ‘Truth oo Life’ - focused on Bak Chunjae(朴春載) & Shin Bulchul(申不出) -)

초록

박춘재는 일명 ‘조선가곡의 대표자’로서 대한제국 시절이었던 15세에 이미 가무별감(歌舞別監)이 되었으며, 1911년에 유성기음반을 취입하여 전국적으로 유명해졌다. 박춘재는 재담에도 능했는데, 그의 재담은 전통적인 가(歌)를 토대로 하여 비-의미적인 말장난 중심의 표현적인 공연 형식이었다.
한편 신불출은 18세부터 취성좌와 조선연극사, 신무대, 문외극단 등의 극단 생활을 하며 배우와 작가, 연출가로 활동했던 신파 연극인이었다. 그리고 척박한 조선 연극계 안에서 십 년 가까이 도전과 실패를 겪고 해결책을 모색하면서 만담이라는 새로운 길을 개척했다. 신불출의 만담은 재담과 달리 노래가 아닌 말에 집중되고 신파극과 달리 행동이 수반되지 않는 새로운 형식이었다. 이후 신불출은 1933년 시에론 레코드에서 취입했던 <읽살마진 대머리>로 일약 스타가 되었고 이후 유사한 넌센스․스케치 음반을 다수 취입했다. 그러나 신불출의 넌센스․스케치 음반자료들은, 그것이 신불출이 비판했던 ‘웃음 본위의 공허한 내용을 가진 것’이라는 점에서 종전에 그가 신파극단에서 해왔던 막간극 넌센스․스케치의 연속이었다.
기존의 논의에서 신불출 만담은 <읽살마진 대머리>를 대표작으로 하여 박춘재의 재담을 근대적으로 계승한 것이라는 평가를 받았다. 하지만 이 논문에서는 재담과 만담의 연속성보다는 그 차이성을 박춘재의 <병신재담>과 신불출의 <관대한 남편>을 통해 살펴보았다.

영어초록

Bak Chunjae was a so distinguished as to be a royal singer at 15-year-old during the Korean empire, and also had earned a national reputation with his recording albums. He was good at Jaedam. And Shin Bulchul was an inventor and a representative of Mandam in the 1930’s. He entered Shinpakuk(新派劇) company at 18-year-old, and so he knew the reality and difficulties in the theatrical circles of Chosun very well. Actually, Mandam was the result or the solution to the problems he experienced after ten years of continuous trials and failure in theatre.
Existing studies have emphasized the continuity between the two genres or their common traditional elements while acknowledging the modernity of Mandam. Many scholars insist that Mandam was close to the tradition of the storytelling called ‘Kangdam’(講談), or the traditional comedy called ‘Sohakzihee’(謔謔之戱)) in the Chosun Dynasty. They usually emphasized the fact that Jaedam and Mandam basically told a story and were composed of conversation(dialogue). In this paper, however, I would like to pay attention to the difference between the performativity of the two genres rather than the continuity between the two, departing from the previous studies which emphasize the development process from 'story tradition’ to 'modern performance' or from ‘traditional performance’ to ‘modern performance’.
I will examine the peculiarity of Jaedam, which was a very important quality in its actual performance but were given little attention in criticism at that time. Son Taedo(孫泰度) argues that Bak Chunjae’s Jaedam was based on traditional 'Chang'(唱) or ‘Ka’(歌) which means ‘song’. I will go further and make a more specific argument that Jaedam was a performance art expressively presenting ‘non-meaning’language. In order to do so, I will analyze that Bak Chunjae's <Byungshin Jaedam>(病身才談, The Jokes of the Disabled). However, Shin Bulchul criticized Jaedam that its ‘non-meaning’ elements were nonsensical. I will argue that Shin Bulchul’s Mandam ultimately aimed at 'meaning' and the 'truth of the modern life' by using the art of the spoken language, not song. And I will examine this in the example of <the generous husband)(관대한 남편)>. In the process, I will discuss what was lost and gained in the crucial time of the colonial modernity.
