박종채의 『열하일기』 교정과 편집－연암산방본을 중심으로－ (The Proofreading and Editing of Park Jongchae朴宗采’s 『Yeolhailgi熱河日記』: Based on the Yeonamsanbangbon燕巖山房本)

초록

박종채(1780~1835)는 연암의 친필 초고본인 『행계잡록』에 수록된 <망양록>을 교정하여 『연암집』(가제)에 수록하였고, 3년 상이 끝난 직후인 1807년에 이를 다시 교정하여 『고정망양록』을 편찬하였다. 이 두 책은 모두 ‘연암산방’이라는 판심이 박혀 있는 원고용지에 쓰여 있다. 박종채는 『고정망양록』을 편집하면서 ‘초고본 계열’이나 충남대본의 35개 단락보다 6단락이 추가되어 총 41개의 단락으로 만들었고, 내용 또한 원문의 일부 글자를 고치거나 연암의 문장을 큰 폭으로 첨삭하는 등 여러 곳을 수정하였다. ‘외집 계열’과 ‘별집 계열’ 『열하일기』에는 이와 같은 『고정망양록』의 내용이 그대로 수록되어 있다.
단국대 연민문고와 고려대 육당문고에는 각각 『연암집(15)』(영본1책)과 『열하일기』(영본6책) 등이 소장되어 있다. 이 두 책은 모두 『고정망양록』과 같이 ‘연암산방’이라는 판심이 박혀 있는 원고용지에 쓰여 있는 것으로 보아, 박종채가 편집한 『연암집』 외집 『열하일기』의 초고로 생각된다. 연민문고본에는 아직 편차가 부여되지 않았으나, 육당문고본에는 편차가 부여되어 제20편에 수록되어 있던 <환연도중록>이 제7편으로 옮겨져 있다. 또한 연민문고본과 편차가 동일한 이본으로 서울대고도서관본이 있고, 육당문고본과 편차가 동일한 이본으로 전남대본이 있다. 이 두 이본에는 모두 26편이 수록되어 있다.
박종채가 『연암집』 별집 『열하일기』를 편집한 시기는 전남대본과 성호본의 <구외이문>에 쓰여 있는 두주의 내용으로 보아 1816년 이후로 생각된다. 이 두 이본은 모두 ‘연암산방’이라는 판심이 박혀 있는 외집을 전사한 것이다. 또한 전남대본에는 제19편에 수록된 <희본명목>의 제목 아래에 <산장잡기> 편입시키라는 주석이 달려 있고, 성호본에는 이것이 <희본명목기>라는 편명으로 제13편에 수록되어 있다. 연암 집안의 가장본(家藏本) 57권 24책을 보충해 필사한 승계문고본에는 <희본명목기>를 <산장잡기>에 편입시키고, 외집 제22편에 수록되어 있던 <금료소초>를 제외시켜 총 24편이 수록되어 있다.
박종채는 당시 사람들이 『열하일기』를 전기(傳奇)나 해소(諧笑)의 작품으로 인식하거나, 이를 잘 읽었다고 말하는 사람들도 그 대의를 깊이 탐구하지 못한 것으로 생각하였다. 따라서 그는 『열하일기』의 문체가 순정하지 못하다는 세간의 의혹을 불식시키기 위하여, 『연암집』 외집과 별집에 수록할 『열하일기』를 편집하면서 원문을 대폭으로 수정하였다. 본 연구는 ‘연암산방’이라는 판심이 표기되어 있는 연암산방본을 중심으로 박종채가 외집과 별집을 교정하고 편집한 양상과 그 의미를 밝혔다는 점에서, ‘외집 계열’ 및 ‘별집 계열’ 이본들의 개작 양상을 규명하거나 『열하일기』의 정본을 완성하는데 도움이 될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

Park Jongchae(朴宗采, 1780~1835) proofread <Mangyangnok亡羊錄>, which had been included in 『Haenggaejabnok杏溪雜錄』, the Yeonam燕巖’s handwriting draft, and corporated it in 『Yeonamjib燕巖集』(the working title, 假題). After three years of mourning for Yeonam, he edited it again and published 『Gojeongmangyangnok考定亡羊錄』 in 1807. These two books were written on the manuscript paper which had the Pansim(the center of the book plate, 版心) written as Yeonamsanbang燕巖山房. When Park Jongchae published 『Gojeongmangyangnok』, he composed it as 41 paragraphs, adding six paragraphs more to the 35 paragraphs of the original edition series or the Chungnamdaebon(the copy in Chungnam National University). He also revised several parts of the contents by modifying some letters and sentences drastically from Yeonam’s original edition. Both the Woijib外集 and Beoljib別集 series of 『Yeolhailgi 』contained the contents of 『Gojeongmanyangnok』 as it was.
Yeonmin淵民 Library of Dankook University and Yukdang六堂 Library of Korea University have 『Yeonamjib(15)』(with one wanting voulme) and 『Yeolhailgi』(with 6 wanting volumes). As these two books were written on the manuscript paper with the Yeonamsanbang pansimlike 『Gojeongman- yangnok』, it seemed that they are the drafts for the 『Yeonamjib』 Woijib of 『Yeolhailgi』 edited by Park Jongchae. Although the Yeonmin Library book doesn’t have the table of contents, the Yukdang library book has it and <Whanyeondojungnok還燕途中錄> was moved to Chapter 7 instead of chapter 20. Another copy of 『Yeolhailgi』 which has the same sequence with the copy of the Yeonmin Library is kept in the library for old books in Seoul National University and one more copy is stored in Chonnam National University which has the same sequence with the Yukdang Library copy. 26 pieces of Yeonam’s works are in these two different books, the Seouldaebon(the copy in Seoul National University) and the Chonnamdaebon.
It seems that the period Park Jongchae edited the 『Yeonamjib』 Beoljib of 『Yeolhailgi』 was after the year of 1816, considering the headnote contents written in <Guwiyimun口外異聞> in the Chonnamdaebon and the Seonghobon(the copy in Seongho Memorial Hall). These two different copies are the books that transcribed the original text of the Woijib with the Yeonamsanbang pansim in an empty notebook. Furthermore, the 19th chapter of <Heebonmyungmok戱本名目> in the Chonnamdaebon had an annotation just below the title to request to incorporate it into <Sanjang- jabgi山莊雜記>. In the Seonghobon, this was put in the 13th chapter with the title name of <Heebonmyungmokgi戱本名目記>. The Sunggae勝溪 Library copy was made after replenishing and transcribing 57 volumes and 24 books of Gajangbon家藏本, the copy kept in the household of Yeonam, and was comprised of total 24 works because Heebonmyungmokgi was incorporated into Sanjangjabgi and <Gumryosocho金蓼小抄> was excluded, which was kept in the 22nd chapter in the Woijib.
Park Jongchae thought that the contemporary people regarded 『Yeolhailgi』 as a biography or a comedy and were not able to understand the profound meaning although they even said they had read it impressively. Therefore, with wishes to eliminate all suspicions that the 『Yeolhailgi』’s writing style isn’t pure, Park Jongchae corrected the original text very drastically while proofreading 『Yeolhailgi』 to compile the Woijib and the Beoljib. This study clarified the aspect and meaning of Park Jondchae’s proofreading of the Woijib and the Beoljib mainly with the Yeonamsanbangbon written on the manuscript papers with the Yeonamsanbang Pansim. In this respect, it is considered that this study could be a help for clarifying the adaption aspect of the different copies for the Woijib and Beoljib series and completing the top copy of 『Yeolhailgi』.
