미북장로회선교부 관할 미션스쿨에 대한 한국인의 경영 참여 (The Korean Participation in the Management of the Mission Schools under the Auspices of Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.)

초록

미북장로회선교부는 평양의 숭실학교와 숭의여학교, 서울의 경신학교와 정신여학교, 대구의 계성학교와 신명여학교, 선천의 신성학교와 보성여학교의 8개 중등학교를 경영하였다. 미북장로회선교부 관할 미션스쿨들의 건물, 토지 및 비품의 소유권은 선교부에 있었지만, 초창기부터 한국인들이 학교 이사진으로 있으면서 학교 운영에 직접적으로 참여하였다.
제1차 세계대전과 미국의 경제공황으로 미북장로회 해외선교부의 교육기금이 감소하였고, 지정학교 제도 도입 이후 기준에 부합하기 위해서는 학교 재정을 확충해야 했다. 이에 미북장로회선교부가 조선예수교장로회 총회에 각 미션스쿨에 대해 한국 교회에서 이사를 파견할 것과 경제적 보조를 해줄 것을 요청했다. 장로회 총회는 학교가 있는 지역 노회에서 선교지부와 협력하도록 했다. 이에 따라 각 지역 노회가 미션스쿨에 학교 이사로 참여하게 된 것이다. 평양 숭실학교와 숭의여학교에는 평양․안주․평서 노회에서, 서울 경신학교와 정신여학교는 경기노회에서, 대구 계성학교와 신명여학교는 경북․경안 노회에서, 선천 신성학교와 보성여학교는 평북․의산․용천 3노회에서 학교 이사진을 파견하게 되었다. 노회뿐만 아니라 동창회와 지역사회에서도 학교 이사진으로 참여하게 되었다.
북장로회선교부 관할 미션스쿨에 한국 노회와 동창회, 지역사회 등에서 이사진으로 참여함으로써, 이들이 선교부와 협력하여 학교 경영을 하게 된 것이다. 이는 뒤에 신사참배 문제로 선교부가 교육사업에서 철수하면서 학교 인계 문제가 대두되었을 때 한국인들이 이사회 정관을 들어 한국인의 학교 인계를 관철시키는 데까지 연결된다.

Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. ran eight secondary mission schools, which were Soongsil boys academy and Soongeui girls' academy in Pyengyang, Kyungsin boys academy and Chungsin girls' academy in Seoul, Kyesung boys academy and Sinmyung girls' academy in Taiku and Sinsung boys academy and Posung girls' academy in Syenchun. The ownership of building, land, and equipment of the secondary schools within its jurisdiction belonged to the Chosen Mission of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., but Koreans participated in school operation as directors from the early days.
Koreans' participation in the school status elevation movement led to their participation in school operation. The educational fund of Board of Foreign Mission of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. decreased due to the WWI and American economic panic. Schools were required to expand their finance in order to meet the criteria after the introduction of the designated school system. Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. asked the general meeting of Presbyterian Church of Joseon to dispatch a director to each mission school from a Korean church and provide economic assistance. The general meeting arranged things in a way that the local presbytery would work with a station in the area of the school. As a result, the local presbytery got to serve the school as a director. Pyeng Yang, An Joo, and Pyeong Suh Presbytery dispatched a group of directors to Soongsil boys academy and Soongeui girls' academy in Pyengyang, Kyung Ki Presbytery to Kyungsin boys academy and Chungsin girls' academy in Seoul, Kyung Buk and Kyung An Presbytery to Kyesung boys academy and Sinmyung girls' academy and Pyung Buk, Eui San, and Yong Chun Presbytery to Sinsung boys academy and Posung girls' academy in Syenchun. In addition to presbyteries, alumni associations and communities participated as directors.
The fact that the Korean presbyteries, alumni associations, and communities participated in the operation of mission schools run by the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. led to Koreans seeing through school operation based on the articles of association of board of directions when the issue of school succession emerged after the Chosen Mission of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. withdrew from education business.
