언캐니 숭고미와 연관된 건축물 디자인 특성에 관한 고찰 (A Study of Architectural Design Features Evoking the Uncanny Sublime Beauty)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 중세부터 근대에 이르기까지 서양 예술과 건축 분야에서는 비례, 조화, 균형을 중시하는 전통적인 미적 기준이 지켜져 왔다. 18세기에 이르러 에드먼드 버크의 숭고 체험에 관한 논문발표 이후 전통적인 우아미에 반하는 숭고미에 대한 미학적 논쟁이 활발하게 이루어졌다. 임마누엘 칸트가 숭고미를 미학적 관점에서 정립시켰고, 프로이트는 정신분석학적 관점에서 숭고와 유사한 작용을 일으키는 언캐니 개념을 제시하였다. 이와 더불어 서구 예술계에서는 15세기 로마유적에서 발굴된 기괴한 그림을 통해 그로테스크라는 개념이 유행하기 시작하였으며 1980년대에 이르러 피터 아이젠만에 의해 현대적 건축해석에 도입이 되었다. 숭고, 언캐니, 그로테스크 개념은 각각 독립적으로 발전하며 다양한 문화예술 분야에서 응용되었는데 그 정의가 확장되고 경계가 모호해지면서 건축해석에 이를 체계적으로 적용하는데 어려움이 있어 왔다. 전통적인 미적 기준에서 해방된 다양하고 도전적인 건축적 아이디어를 포용하기 위해서 언캐니 숭고미에 대한 새로운 이해가 필요한 시점이다. (연구방법) 다양한 문화 분야에서 생산된 숭고, 언캐니, 그로테스크 개념에 관련된 문헌들을 포괄적으로 검토하여 공통점을 파악하고 이를 바탕으로 좀 더 명확한 협의의 언캐니 숭고미의 정의를 제시하였다. 문헌연구를 통해 언캐니 숭고미를 촉발하는 5가지 건축물의 특징이 추출되었다: (1) 거대함, (2) 애니미즘적 상징성, (3) 비대칭과 몰형식성, (4) 그로테스크한 외형, (5) 죽음을 연상시키는 색채. 언캐니 숭고미를 불러일으키는 건축물 사례를 다섯 개 선정하고 다섯 가지 건축물의 특징을 적용하며 이들을 평가하였다. 해외 사례는 뉴욕의 오큘러스 역사, 오스트리아의 쿤스트하우스 박물관, 스페인 바르셀로나의 사그라다 파밀리아 성당이 선택되었고, 국내 사례로는 세종정부청사와 롯데월드타워가 포함되었다. (결과) 언캐니 숭고미를 불러일으키는 다섯 가지 특징을 각각 3단계로 점수를 부여하고 사례별로 총점을 합산하여 비교하였다. 오큘러스와 쿤스트하우스가 각각 9점과 8점으로 상대적으로 높은 점수를 받아서 다섯 가지의 언캐니 숭고미적 특징을 가장 다양하게 가지고 있는 건축물로 선정되었다. 반면 사그라다 파밀리아 성당과 롯데월드타워는 상대적으로 낮은 점수를 받았다. (결론) 숭고, 언캐니, 그로테스크의 개념은 학제적 융복합을 통해 경계가 확장되어왔으나 동시에 모호성이 증가하여 객관적인 평가에 활용되기 어려운 측면이 있었다. 본 연구는 언캐니 숭고미와 연관된 다섯 가지 건축적 특징을 제시함으로써 도전적인 건축가의 창의적인 시도를 사전에 객관적으로 평가할 수 있는 기본적인 틀을 제시하였다. 추가 연구를 통해 더 명확한 평가지표와 가중치를 개발할 수 있다면 창의적인 건축적 아이디어를 포용하고 사회적 갈등을 줄이는데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) From the medieval period to the modern era, Western art and architecture have adhered to traditional aesthetic standards of proportion, harmony, and balance. In the 18th century, aesthetic debates on the concept of the sublime, which opposes traditional elegance, became lively following Edmund Burke's publication on the sublime experience. Immanuel Kant established the concept of the sublime from an aesthetic perspective, while Freud introduced the concept of the uncanny, which produces effects similar to the sublime, from a psychoanalytic perspective. Additionally, in Western art, the concept of the grotesque emerged with the discovery of bizarre paintings in Roman ruins in the 15th century and was later introduced into architectural interpretation by Peter Eisenman in the 1980s. The concepts of the sublime, the uncanny, and the grotesque have independently developed and been applied in various cultural and artistic fields, but their definitions and boundaries have become blurred, posing challenges for their application in architectural interpretation. (Method) Through a comprehensive review of literature related to the concepts of the sublime, the uncanny, and the grotesque produced in various cultural fields, commonalities are identified, and based on this, a more precise definition of the uncanny sublime beauty is proposed. Five characteristics triggering the uncanny sublime beauty were extracted through the literature review: (1) grandeur, (2) animistic symbolism, (3) asymmetry and amorphousness, (4) grotesque appearance, and (5) colors evoking death. These five characteristics of uncanny sublime beauty were used as criteria to select and evaluate five architectural case studies. The international cases included the Oculus at the World Trade Center in New York, the Kunsthaus Graz in Austria, and the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona, Spain, while the domestic cases included the Sejong Government Complex and the Lotte World Tower. (Results) Each of the five characteristics triggering the uncanny sublime beauty was scored in three levels, and the total scores were summed up and compared for each case study. The Oculus and the Kunsthaus Graz received the highest scores of 9 and 8 points, respectively, making them the architectural structures with the most various uncanny sublime characteristics. (Conclusions) Until now, the concept of the sublime has been difficult to objectively evaluate due to its vague definition and evaluation criteria. Through this study, we provided a basic framework for objectively evaluating the creative attempts of challenging architects in advance by presenting five architectural criteria related to the uncanny sublime beauty. With further research, if clearer evaluation indicators and weights can be developed, it is expected to embrace more creative architectural ideas and contribute to reducing social conflicts.
