초록

AI의 광풍이 몰아치고 있는 오늘날 교육자로서 인간에 대한 고민이 크다. AI를 발전시키고 경제화 하는 데 모든 관심이 쏠리고 있는 이때, 인간의 본질과 의미를 묻고 성찰하는 것이 교양교육의 과제일 것이다. 우리와 유사한 문제의식을 가지고 사유한 선각자가 있으니 바로 프리드리히 실러다. 그는 문명의 발전으로 황폐해진 인간성과 분열된 사회를 비판하고 그 치유책으로 미적 교육을 주창한바, 이것을 오늘날의 관점에서 재음미해 보는 것이 본고의 목적이다. 실러는 계몽주의가 감각과 이성, 물질과 정신, 경향과 의무, 진과 선 등을 끝없이 갈라놓았다고 진단하고 이 분열을 조화와 통일로 바꾸기 위해 眞이나 善이 아니라 美가 절실하다고 봤다. 그의 미학과 미적 교육은 여기서 출발한다. 실러는 순수한 자기 규정성으로서의 자유를 미의 본질로 파악하고 그 원리를 인간뿐만 아니라 자연과 사물에까지 적용한다. 이 미적 자유가 인간에게는 유희정신으로 구현되어 전인성과 총체성을 구현한다고 본다. 미적 교육은 여기에 기반한다. 실러의 미적 사유는 오늘날 맹목적인 과학기술의 발전과 자본주의적 폭압 아래 피폐해진 인간성을 회복하고 아름다운 사회를 구축하는 데 의미 있는 참조가 되리라 생각한다. 즉, 본고는 실러의 인간학적 미학을 자세히 고찰하고 그것이 주는 교육적 함의를 추적한다. 다만 실러 자신이 미의 원리와 본질에 천착하고 구체적인 교육론을 서술하지 않았듯이 본고에서도 원리적인 교육론을 살피고 실천적인 의미의 미적 교육 방안은 독립적인 연구과제로 남겨둔다.

Today, as the AI ​​craze rages, discussion about the nature of humans is more urgent than ever. At a time when all attention is focused on ways to upgrade AI and utilize it economically, it would be humanities and liberal arts education to ask and reflect on its meaning from a distance. At times like this, when we look back at history, we encounter a pioneer who had insight into problems similar to ours and thought about alternatives. Friedrich Schiller of the late 18th century witnessed a society devastated by humanity and divided by the Enlightenment and the rapid development of civilization, and proposed aesthetic education as a remedy.
The purpose of this paper is to reexamine this from today's perspective. Schiller reflects on the problem of the Enlightenment, and believes that the fundamental problem is the splits between sense and reason, matter and spirit, tendency and duty, change and constancy, truth and good, etc. Therefore, education is urgently needed to overcome the splits and achieve harmony and integration, but education based on the concepts of truth or goodness is not desirable. Beauty, whose essence is freedom as self-determination, should become the central concept of education.
Schiller defines beauty as ‘freedom in phenomena’ and sees it as the most autonomous and subjective value, free from all external factors or coercion. In other words, it is believed that freedom and autonomy can be cultivated through aesthetic opportunities, whether nature or art. Next, beauty takes the form of harmony and unity, which appears through the interaction of difference and diversity, and the part and the whole. The active way to achieve this harmony and unity is play and the impulse to play. In other words, the human impulse to play combines the human sensory and rational impulses in the most beautiful and healthy way. Therefore, as long as humans play, they become whole people and recover their original human wholeness. Schiller's logic and argument is that people who have recovered their wholeness in this way can be happy themselves and make society and the country beautiful. In this way, the core concepts of Schiller's aesthetics are beauty and play, and this is believed to be an opportunity to restore human integrity.
