우리나라 마애불에 나타난 미의식 연구 (Research on the aesthetic consciousness in the Rock-cut Buddhist Sculpture of the Korea)

초록

이 연구는 우리나라 각 시대의 마애불 속에 표현된 조형성의 공통성과 차별성을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 미의식을 도출하는 과제이다. 마애불에 나타난 미학이나 미의식은불교조각이 갖는 불교미학인 원융(圓融)과 장엄(莊嚴) 그리고 한국미술에 공통으로나타나는 자연주의 미학을 가진다. 삼국시대, 통일신라, 고려, 조선시대 마애불의 조형성과 그 속에 내재된 조형의식과 미의식을 살펴보았다. 시대와 지역마다 다른 모습이듯 드러난 조형성과 미의식은 같기도 하고 다르기도 하였다. 이는 면면히 이어지는전통미술문화 속에 많은 공통성과 또 다른 차별성을 갖는다. 마애불에는 불교미학의한 축인 장엄의 비중이 두드러지지 않는다. 원융은 모든 중생의 귀의처인 부처를 이상화하는 것에 핵심이 있다면, 이는 시대마다 이상적인 인물유형으로 부처를 형상화하였다. 마애불 조성 그 내면에 관류하는 조형정신이나 미의식의 공통성은 종교적 이상의원만한 상호(相好)를 가진 불상 조성과 전통적인 미술문화에서 추구되어진 미의식인자연주의 미학이 공존한다. 백제마애불에서는 맑은 미소 속에 지극히 인간적인 얼굴,신라마애불에서는 고졸한 미소 속에 소박한 얼굴, 통일신라마애불에서는 이상적인 신체 추구 속에 권위주의적인 얼굴, 고려시대 마애불에서는 절대자 모습으로 신이한 힘을 가진 신상 같은 얼굴 그리고 조선마애불에서는 나약한 선비의 인간적인 얼굴을 본다. 한국미술의 자연주의 성격인 무작위성, 비균제성, 해학성, 세부 표현에 무관심, 자연을 닮은 형상성, 자연환경과의 조화 등의 미학이 마애불에도 공통적으로 내재되어있다. 또한 시대와 지역에 따라 차별성을 갖기도 한다. 각 시대마다 조형적 특성이 다르지만 자연주의 미학과 절제되고 함축적인 표현 속에 균제와 조화를 가진 인간적인모습의 부처를 추구하였다. 이는 마애불에서만 보는 미의식이나 조형의식이 아니라 한국미술의 보편적 미의식과 조형의식에 수렴하고 있다. 이는 불교적 이상인 원융을 추구하면서 자연에 순응하는 자연주의 미학의 모습이다.

영어초록

This study investigates similarities and differences in artistic expressions embedded in the rock-cut sculptures of Buddha created each era in order to determine the aesthetic consciousness of the sculptures.
The aesthetics and aesthetic consciousness contained in the rock-cut sculptures of Buddha are based on both Buddhist aesthetics, emphasizing reasonable harmony and magnificence, and the naturalistic aesthetics which commonly appear in Korean art. This paper explores the artistic expression of the rock-cut Buddhist sculptures created during the Three Kingdoms period in Korea, the Unified Silla Kingdom, and Chosŏn Dynasty. Then it examines the characteristics of art and aesthetic consciousness inherent in the sculptures. It discerns the similarities and differences among the sculptures created in the different times and locations. These similarities and differences exist throughout all traditional Korean art and culture. Relative importance of magnificence,which is one of the axes of Buddhist aesthetics, is not notable on the rock-cut sculptures of Buddha. The sense of reasonable harmony mainly idealizes the Buddhist, so the shapes of the Buddhist sculptures trace the idealized shapes of humans imitated in each time period. The converging point of the artistic spirit and aesthetic consciousness penetrating the artistic characteristics of the Buddhist sculptures is the coexistence of the harmonized reciprocity reflecting the religious ideal and naturalistic aesthetics all traditional Korean art and culture pursue.
The rock-cut sculptures of Buddha from the Baekje Kingdom is reminiscent of a typical human face wearing a pure smile, whereas the rock-cut sculptures of Buddha from Silla Kingdom reflects a very artless face dominated by a plain smile. The rock-cut sculptures of Buddha from the Unified Silla Kingdom shows a face with authority as part of an ideal body shape. The rock-cut sculptures of Buddha from the Goryeo Dynasty era reveals the mysterious face of God, the absolute being. The rock-cut sculptures of Buddha from the Chosŏn Dynasty represents an image of a feeble scholar. Universal characteristics of rock-cut sculptures of Buddha include naturalistic aesthetics such as randomness, asymmetry, humor,disinterest in detail expression, shapes resembling nature, harmony with nature, etc. However, the time and locations in which each are created are factors that produce evident differences among the sculptures.
Despite these differences in the artistic characteristics of the sculptures,naturalistic aesthetics and humanistic shapes in balance and harmony seem to be universal in Buddha sculptures. This implies that it is not only rock-cut sculptures of Buddha, but also all Korean art that shows this artistic spirit and consciousness as well as naturalistic aesthetics targeting infinite interpenetration as ideal in Buddhism.
