초록

이 논문의 주된 목적은 이제마의 사심신물 사단을 검토하여 성리학과 다른 사단 이론을 전개한 의도가 무엇인지를 찾는 것이다. 이를 위해 필자는 유가의 사단 논의를 살핀 다음, 이제마가 시도한 사단의 재해석, 그리고 인의예지의 실현 방법을 검토하여 유가 전통의 사단 해석과 본질적으로 다른 점이 무엇인가를 분석했다. 사단은 송대 이후 다양한 시각에서 해석했지만 이들은 모두 초월적 관점에서 논의하는 특징이 있다. 그러나 이제마는 경험의 관점에서 사단을 사심신물 사단으로 재해석하고 이를 토대로 의학이론을 전개했다. 그는 사단을 심신에 선천적으로 주어진 지행 능력으로 이해하고 심신의 작용을 자신의 의료 경험을 통해 검증함으로써 천인합일을 지향하는 초월적인 사단 해석을 벗어나려고 했다. 또한 그는 감정의 편착이 발병의 가장 큰 요인임을 발견하고 감정의 편착과 심신의 사단 기능과의 관계를 검증하여 의학이론의 기초로 삼았다. 그리고 그는 심신의 객관적인 도덕 판단과 행위의 기능을 공공성에서 찾고 극공의 수신을 통해 도덕 판단의 주관성과 사욕으로 인한 도덕 판단의 오류를 벗어나려고 했다. 이에 근거하면 이제마가 사단을 재해석한 것은 도덕에 대한 초월적･사변적 해명을 벗어나는 계기를 제공한 것으로 평가할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 의학이론의 근거를 심신의 사단 기능에 기초함으로써 검증 가능한 의학이론을 모색한 것으로 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The main purpose of this article is to analyze Lee Jema's theory of the four beginnings of "affair, mind, and body and thing" and therefore the reason why he developed his own ideas, which are different from Neo-Confucianism. For the purpose, I researched Confucian discussions of the four beginnings, and later his reinterpretation of them, and his views of the realization of humanness, righteousness, rituals, and wisdom. In addition, I studied his originality, which differentiates his views from other Confucian traditions.
Since the Song dynasty, the four beginnings had been understood from various perspectives, but they have one similarity, that is, a transcendental standpoint However, Lee Jema reinterpreted the four beginnings as the four beginnings of "affair, mind, body and thing" from an experiential perspective, and proposed a medical theory on the basis of human experience. He understood the four beginnings as cognitive and practical faculties inherent in human mind and body, and tried to overcome a transcendental understanding of the four beginnings to aim at the unification of the Heaven and humans by verifying the function of human body and mind through his own medical experience. Also, he realized that biased emotions are major causes of disease and analyzed the relation between the biased emotions and the four beginnings.
He thought that our objective moral judgment and action are possible due to the commonality of our experience, and claimed that we should overcome the fallacy of moral judgement caused by subjectivity and personal desires through our utmost moral cultivation. As a result, his efforts to reinterpret the four beginnings can be understood as a chance to overcome transcendental and speculative understandings of morality. Also, the fact that he based the foundation of medicine on the function of the four beginnings of human mind and body can be understood as his trial to search for a verifiable medical theory.
