成三問과 申叔舟의 策文에 나타난 現實認識 比較 (Comparison of the Perception of Realities between Seong Sam moon and Shin Sook joo through Observed in 「Chaekmun」)

초록

本稿에서는 성삼문과 신숙주가 1447년(세종 29년) 文科重試에서 제시한 策文을 통해 그들의 현실인식의 차이를 비교해 보았다.
策文은 어려움에 처해 있는 국가의 문제를 소통시킬 수 있도록 과거를 통해 세상에 첫발을 내딛는 젊은 인재들에게 해결책을 구하는 수단이었으며, 젊은 인재들의 학문적 역량과 현실에 대한 견해를 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 도구였다. 本稿에서 다룬 성삼문과 신숙주의 책문은 하나의 策題(策問)에 대한 서로 다른 策文(對策)이 남아있는 경우로 매우 드문 일이다. 또한 성삼문과 신숙주는 집현전 학사로 같은 길을 걷다가 癸酉靖難이라는 사건을 계기로 극명하게 인생의 행로가 엇갈린 ‘역사의 라이벌’이기도 하다. 그러므로 이러한 두 인물이 젊은 시절 같은 책제에 제출한 대책을 살펴보는 것은 매우 흥미로운 일이다.
본고는 우선 策題에서 구체적 사례로 들어 준 네 가지 항목에 대한 이들 두 사람의 책문을 조목조목 비교하고, 이를 종합해 策問의 본지인 법의 폐단을 고치는 방법에 대한 두 사람의 의견 차이를 살펴보았다.
이를 간단히 정리하면 성삼문은 기본 원칙에 충실할 것을 말하며, 지금의 법을 지키는 것만으로 충분하다고 하였다. 그러면서 역대 정치의 득실을 살펴 역사적 사례에서 배우고, 훌륭한 왕들의 정치를 본 받아 그들의 마음을 본심으로 보존하면 至治에 이를 수 있다고 말하였다.
반면, 신숙주는 현재 대두되고 있는 문제를 직시하고, 이를 현실적으로 고칠 수 있거나 고칠 필요가 있는 것은 개선해 나가야 한다고 하였다. 그러면서 言路를 열어 直言을 들으라는 것이다. 과거에서 策問을 내어 신하들의 對策을 통해 의견을 듣는 것처럼 여러 사람의 의견을 절실하게 듣고 잘못된 점이 있다면 이를 時宜에 맞게 개혁해 나간다면 폐단이 누적될 이유가 없어 근심이 사라질 것이라는 것이다.
성삼문은 治者의 一心에 至治의 성패가 달려 있다고 하였고, 신숙주는 여러 사람의 의견을 들어 時宜에 맞게 개혁해 나가야 폐단이 없다고 한 것이다. 이러한 그들의 현실인식의 차이는 그들이 살다간 綱常義理의 삶과 事功權變의 삶을 그대로 투영한 것이라 볼 수 있다.
‘綱常’과 ‘權變’은 양면적 성향으로 갈라질 수 있는 개념으로 인식할 수 있지만, 현실적으로는 둘 다 필요로 하는 것이다. 유학의 이상은 ‘綱常’과 ‘權變’이 中正을 이루는 것이지만 諸現實은 그렇지 못한 경우가 더 많다. 본고에서 논한 성삼문과 신숙주 역시 兩者의 조화를 구현하기 보다는 한 사람은 綱常의 측면에, 다른 한 사람은 權變의 측면에 치우쳐 각기 자신의 생각과 신념으로 일생을 살다간 사람들이다.
이러한 점에서 본고는 이들이 젊은 시절 제출한 책문에 나타난 현실인식의 차이점을 비교해 봄으로 해서 策文이 그들이 갖고 있던 생각의 저변을 엿볼 수 있으며, 극명하게 엇갈린 인생행보를 짐작할 수 있는 좋은 자료가 됨을 증명하고자 하였다.

영어초록

This study compared the perception of realities between Seong Sam moon(成三問) and Shin Sook joo(申叔舟) using Chaekmun(策文) presented in civil service examination Jungsi(文科重試) in 1447 (19th year of King Sejong).
Chaekmun was a means to communicate difficult problems in the country and seek solutions for the problems from young talented people who took their first step into the world through the civil service examination. Furthermore, it was a good instrument for weighing young people’s academic competencies and their view of realities. The Chaekmun of Seong Sam moon and Shin Sook joo examined in this study is a rare case that different answers(對策) remain for the same question(策問). Moreover, Seong Sam moon and Shin Sook joo are ‘rivals of history’ who walked the same road as the scholars of Jiphyeonjeon(集賢殿) but split into the opposite directions at Gyeyujeongran(癸酉靖難, the purge in 1453). Therefore, it is quite interesting to compare the answers presented by the two persons for the same question during their youth.
This study compared the two persons’ Chaekmun item by item for the four items suggested as specific examples in the question, and determined differences in their opinions on how to correct evil customs of law, which was the main purport of the question.
According to the results of this study, Seong Sam moon suggested being faithful to basic principles and that it was enough to observe the established laws. In addition, he said that the ideal government could be attained by learning historical cases and examining the gains and losses of past governments, and imitating great kings’ governance and keeping their principles in heart.
On the other hand, Shin Sook joo suggested that immediate problems should be clarified and corrected if they could or should be corrected. Moreover, he said that the path of discussion should be opened in order to hear just opinions. According to his answer, if opinions were collected from various people like the civil service examination presenting questions and hearing the subjects’ answers, problems would be corrected timely, no evil practice would be established, and everything would go well.
Seong Sam moon insisted that the success of government depended on the ruler’s whole mind, and Shin Sook joo maintained that evil customs would be removed if many people’s opinions would be heard and problems would be solved in a timely manner. This difference in their perception of realities was reflected also in their respective life of morality and justice(綱常義理) and life of wisdom and achievement(事功權變).
‘Morality(綱常)’ and ‘wisdom(權變)’ may be considered to be concepts contradictory to each other, but practically both are required. The Confucian ideal is harmony between ‘morality’ and ‘wisdom’ but most of real cases fail to reach the level. For Seong Sam moon and Shin Sook joo discussed in this study as well, they followed their respective thought and belief throughout their life, inclining to either morality or wisdom rather than pursuing harmony between the two.
This study attempted to find differences in the perception of realities between the two figures based on Chaekmun that they presented during their youth and, by doing so, to prove that Chaekmun is good material for probing into the base of their thoughts and understanding their extremely contrasting life journeys.
