조선 후기 獬豸像의 도상 변천 - 광화문 해치상을 중심으로 (The Iconographic Developments of the Haechi Statue in the Late Joseon Period – A Study focused on the Haechi Statue at Gwanghwa Gate)

초록

이 논문은 해치의 도상 변천과정을 통해 조선시대 해치상의 양식변천 과정을 밝히는 것이 연구의 목적이다. 이를 위해 먼저 중국의 기록과 17 세기 공신상에 등장하는 해치 흉배를 살펴봄으로서 조선에서도 17 세기 전반 이전에는 중국의 도상을 충실하게 따르고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 해치의 도상은 양란 이후 17 세기 후반부터 변화를 시작하여 사자와 결합되는 과도기적인 시기를 거쳐 19 세기 후반 광화문 해치상을 기점으로 조선만의 독창적인 도상이 정립되었던 것을 확인하여 보았다.
해치 도상의 변화 이유에 대해서는 자세히 알 수 없지만 숙종 이후 조선중화주의에 의거하여 조선의 문화 수준에 깊은 자부심을 느끼며 문화 전반에 걸쳐 중국을 모방하는데서 벗어나 조선만의 고유한 색채가 발현되었던 문화사적 흐름이 주요한 원인이 되었던 것으로 추정된다.
해치 도상의 변천과정에 관한 연구는 조선 전기와 후기에 제작된 해치상의 편년 근거로 사용되었다. 조선 전기 작품으로 추정되는 해치상은 주둥이가 앞으로 돌출되어 있고, 머리 중앙에 큰 뿔이 하나 있으며, 온 몸이 비늘로 장식되어 있는 등 17 세기 전반 이전의 도상으로 제작되었기 때문에 경복궁이 창건되는 조선 전기에 작품으로 판단된다.
조선 후기로 편년되는 해치상은 주둥이가 돌출되지 않았으며, 머리 중앙의 뿔은 나선형의 돌출돌기로 형식화되다가 사라지며, 온 몸을 원형 점무늬로 장식되는 등 조선 전기와는 다른 특징을 보여 중국과는 다른 조선만의 독창적인 해치 도상이 정립되었다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
조선 후기 해치상은 광화문 해치상을 정점으로 하여 제작 기법과 작품 수준이 현저하게 저하되는데, 당시 혼란했던 사회상이 예술작품에 어떻게 투영되었는지를 알 수 있는 좋은 예라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This dissertation is framed for stylistic developments of the Haechi (a mythical unicorn-lion) statue by investigating iconographic changes of the mythical creature. First of all, according to Chinese records and a rank badge (hyungbae) with the Haechi figure appeared in meritorious retainers’ portraits. Chinese iconography of Haechi was seen in the artwork produced before the Joseon dynasty in the early 17thcentury. This iconographic characteristic of Haechi started to change since the late 17th century after the Japanese Invasion of Joseon in 1592 and the Manchu war of 1636. At this time it went through a period of transition, and fused with the form of a lion. Finally Joseon’s Haechi iconography achieved its originality of iconographic characteristics as seen in the Haechi statue of the late 19thcentury at GwanghwaGate.
Even though we cannot recognize an exact reason for the transformation of Haechi iconography, it is possible that Sinocentrism after King Sukjong’s reign profoundly affected Joseon society and provided Joseon people with pride in high-developed culture.
Possibly for these reasons they did not merely copy Chinese culture, but created Joseon’s originality with contemporary cultural flow.
Research on changes of Haechi iconography was applied to record chronology of the Haechi statue which was manufactured in early to late Joseon period. When it comes to the Haechi statue of early Joseon period, it is characterized by its projecting mouth, a horn in the center of its head and the body covered with scales. These iconographic features are detected in the Haechi statue produced before the early 17th century; therefore it seems that the statue belongs to the work of early Joseon period when Kyeongbokgung Palace was built.
The Haechi statue recorded as late Joseon period does not have the projecting mouthpart anymore. In addition the central head horn with convoluted projection which appeared in the statue gradually disappeared, and its whole body is decorated with a dotted pattern. These iconographic characteristics are totally different from those of early Joseon period. It means that Joseon’s innovative Haechi iconography was developed at that time.
After the time of the Haechi statue at Gwanghwa Gate, the statue of late Joseon period met a fall in its technical standards. It shows how contemporary social instability in late Joseon period was reflected in art work.
