초록

한국 사천왕상은 시대마다 위치한 곳이 달랐다. 통일기 신라 초에는 ‘탑 안에봉안된 사리기 바깥 면’에 위치하다가, 8세기 중엽 무렵부터 ‘탑의 초층 탑신 면석’으로 옮겨갔다. 이후에는 사찰 입구에 天王門이 건립되고, 그 안에 봉안되면서 寺域을 지킨다. 고대동아시아의 예로 비추어 보면 佛殿 내부에도 사천왕상을 봉안했을 가능성이 높지만 아쉽게도 남아있는 예는 없다. 고려시대에도 『金光明經』 도량이 40여 차례 이상 열렸고, 이때 사천왕상은 필수였기 때문에 불전 안에 사천왕상을 모셨을 것이다. 남아있는 예만으로 단언하기는 어렵겠지만, 사천왕상은 점차 ‘안에서 밖으로’ 자리를 옮기는 뚜렷한 변화를 보인다.
탑과 佛殿에 위치해 있던 사천왕상은 13세기 후반 무렵 사찰 입구에 마련된 천왕문에 봉안되기 시작했고, 사천왕이 수호해야할 공간은 사찰 전체로 확장된다. 문헌 기록으로는‘1337년 통도사 천왕문 건립’이 가장 이른 예이지만, 정황상 1270년 入元 求法僧이 갑자기늘어나는 13세기 후반 즈음부터는 이미 중국 사찰의 천왕전이 고려 사찰 영역에 도입되었을가능성을 제시했다. 이에 따라 남아있는 대형 사천왕상과 천왕문의 예만을 두고 ‘천왕문이조선시대 후기에 시작했고, 그 원인이 임진왜란 이후 碧巖 覺性(1575~1660)의 호국의 발현때문’이라고 본 기왕의 견해에 대해 보다 면밀히 검토할 필요가 있다고 보았다.

영어초록

Korea ‘four heavenly king statues’ were differently placed in each age. In the early unified Silla, it was located on the 'outer side of the enshrined sarira reliquary inside the pagoda', and from the middle of the 8th century, it moved to the ground floor stupa underpinning face stone of pagoda. After that, the ‘four heavenly kings gate building’ (天王門) was built at the temple entrance, and enshrined in it to protect the temple area (寺域). In the case of ancient East Asia, it is likely that the four heavenly king statues were enshrined in the Buddhist temple (佛殿), but unfortunately there are no examples left. In the Goryeo period, ‘place of enlightenment(道場)’ of “Jinguangmingjing (金光明經 Suvarṇa-prabhāsôttama-sūtra)" was held more than 40 times, and because the four heavenly king statues were primarily required at this time, the four heavenly king statues may have been received in the Buddhist temple. It is difficult to say with only the remaining examples, but the four heavenly king statues gradually show a distinct change in shifting 'inside out'.
The four heavenly king statues, located in the pagoda and Buddhist temple, began to be enshrined in the four heavenly statue gate building at the temple entrance in the late 13th century, and the space that four heavenly kings must defend expands throughout the whole temple. According to the documentary records, "the construction of the four heavenly kings gate building of Tongdosa temple(通度寺) in 1337" is the earliest example, but as a matter of fact, from the late 13th century when ‘dharma-seeking monk’ (求法僧) suddenly increased in 1270, the four heavenly statue hall of temples in China had already been introduced into the temple area in Goryeo. As a result, the four heavenly statue gate buildings were started in the late Joseon era with only the remaining large-scale four heavenly king statues and the four heavenly statue gate buildings as examples, and it is thought that it is necessary to examine more carefully the previous view that the cause is due to the patriotic appearance of Byeokam Gakseong (碧巖 覺性 1575-1660) after Imjin Japanese Invasion (1592-1598).
