일본 독본에서의 문종(文種) 의식 형성 과정 (The Formation of the Sense of Genre in Japanese Language Textbooks)

초록

한국 개화기의 교과서는 한국의 독자성을 유지하기 위한 노력은 있었으나 많은 부분 일본의 영향을 받아 출발했다는 것은 주지의 사실이다. 이후 식민지기의교과서 또한 어쩔 수 없이 일본의 의도대로 편찬될 수밖에 없었다. 이러한 영향관계에서 살펴보았을 때 한국에서 일본 교과서의 흐름을 분석하는 것은 큰 의미가있다 할 수 있다. 본고는 일본 국어교과서의 큰 흐름을 살펴보고 문종(文種, 장르) 의식이 교과서에 어떻게 반영되었는지를 고찰하였다. 일본 국어교과서 역사의 큰 흐름을 살펴볼 때 중요한 변화를 말하자면, 한문에서 일본문(和文)으로의변화, 문어체에서 구어체로의 변화, 지식전달 중시에서 문학적 내용 중시로의 전환, ‘국어과(國語科)’의 성립, 근대적 ‘문학’개념의 성립 등으로 설명할 수 있다. 이러한 과정이 국민국가의 성립, 언문일치, 표준어성립, 문학적 취향의 중시 등여러 층위에서 복합적이고 다양하게 진행되고 있었고, 이러한 국어교재의 시대적흐름은 국민의식의 함양과 제국주의 체제를 공고하게 하는 방향으로 진행되었다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 감성적인 글의 중시, 서구문물의 도입 등은 필연적으로 문종을 세분화하며, 이는 곧 다양한 글쓰기와 감상의 등장을 의미한다. 교과서에 실릴 글들의 선정과 배치에 대한 고민, 교과서 문장의 장문화(長文化)에따라, 장르를 세분화하고 명확하게 구분하는 감각도 동시에 형성되어 갔다는 것은 어떻게 보면 당연한 귀결이라 볼 수 있다. 교과서 내의 문종 개념은, 처음에는소설류, 도덕상 담화, 이학(理學)상 논설, 여러 대가의 문장, 시가(詩歌) 등으로근대적 장르의식 없이 분류되었던 것이, 시간이 흐름에 따라 ‘수신’, ‘이과’, ‘지리’, ‘역사’, ‘실업(實業)’, ‘국민교육’ 등으로 내용에 따라 분류하게 되었고, 이후 문학적 취향의 중요성이 대두됨에 따라 ‘문학’이라는 분류가 추가되었다. 이는 당시일본문단의 서구 근대문학의 도입과 정착이 교과서에도 반영되고 있음을 보여주는 것이라 볼 수 있다

영어초록

Korea showed some efforts to maintain their own identity, it is well-known that in many aspects they developed under the influence of Japan. Consequently, textbooks of Korea after the period of Japanese colonial rule were bound to be compiled as the Japanese authorities intended. Considering this context of historical influence, it would be of great significance to analyze the historical trend of the school textbooks of Japan. The present paper surveyed the overall trend in Japanese language textbooks, and explored how the sense of the genre of writing was reflected in them. Major changes in the historical development of Japanese language textbooks include the change from Chinese characters to Japanese characters, from literary style to colloquial style, the changeover of focus from knowledge transmission to literary contents, the establishment of ‘Japanese language’ as a subject, and the formation of the modern concept of ‘literature.’ These changes were made in a complex and diverse manner in multiple dimensions including the founding of the nation-state, the unity of the written and spoken language, the establishment of the standard language, and a high regard for literary tastes. And this study could confirm that the historical changes of the Japanese language textbooks was toward the direction of cultivating the national consciousness and consolidating the imperialist system. Further, putting emphasis on the emotional style of writing and the introduction of Western culture inevitably led to the subdivision of writing genres, which meant the appearance of diverse styles of writing and appreciation. The concern over the selection and layout of the articles to be compiled into the textbooks as well as the increased length of the sentences in them, naturally led to a growing sense of breaking down genres and clearly demarcating them. With little sense of modern genres, early textbooks compiled fiction, moral lessons, scientific articles, excerpts from great writers, and poetry. Yet as time passes, Japanese language textbooks came to show classification by genre, including ‘morality’, ‘science’, ‘geography’, ‘history’, ‘vocational and technical education’, and ‘national education.’ Subsequently, ‘literature’ genre was added as the importance of literary tastes came to the fore.
This can be interpreted as a reflection of the circumstances of the Japanese literary world at that time in which modern literature of the West was being introduced and taking root.
