十二地支의 文字學的 考察 (A Literal Study on the Characters of Twelve Earthly branches)

초록

본 논문은 아시아 한자문화권에서 서수부호문자(序數符號文字) 체계인 동시에 역(易, 曆, 歷)을 이해하는 반복 순환 문자체계로서 전통 문화의 근저를 이루고 있는 육십갑자의 음적(陰的) 구성 요소인 십이 지지 글자의 문자학적 고찰을 하고자 함이다.
십이지지의 글자는 십 천간과 마찬가지로 그 기원과 최초의 사용처는 아직 정확 하게 밝혀지지는 않았다. 십 천간과 같이 십이지지 글자는 서수사적 의미를 지니고 있으며, 시절의 흐름에 따른 태양의 심천을 나타내는 음양소식(陰陽消息)을 표시하는 부호문자이기도 하다.
갑골문에서 보여 지는 완벽한 육십갑자-현재에 쓰여지고 있는 것과 동일- 이전 에 고간지자(古干支字)가 있기는 하다. 그러나 역사 시대로 인정되는 은(殷) 대의 갑골문으로 새겨진 갑골과 수골 조각에서의 날짜를 기록한 역(曆)의 기록과, 서수사적인 역(歷)의 부호 기능, 반복 순환하는 천문적인 시간성을 가지는 역(易)의 부호체계로 이해되는 간지글자에 대한 문자적 고찰은 의미가 있다고 본다.
문자학이란 글자의 형태(形), 소리(音), 의미(義)의 기원, 형성과정, 변화, 등을 살펴보는 것인데, 음가는 중국과 다르므로, 본 논문에서는 십이지지 글자의 형성과정인 기원, 그리고 글자의 형태와 의미에 대한 고찰로 제한 한다. 우선, 각 천간의 자형의 발달 과정을 갑골문(甲骨文)-금문(金文)-대전(大篆)-고문(古文)-소전(小篆)의 순서로 알아보았다, 글자 형태에 의거한 글자 의미 해석은 후한(後漢)의 허신(許愼)이 지은 『說文解字』에서 정점을 이룬다. 특히 한대(漢代)에 대두한 음양오행설과 글자 형태에 의거한 의미 해설은 근대 실학파와 고증학파들의 많은 비판을 받지만, 동아시아권 전통문화의 이해체계에서는 여전히 실용되고 있다. 허신의 음양 우주론적 해설에 비판을 가한 청대(淸代) 갑골학자 곽말약(郭沫若)의 과학적 고증에 의한 십 천간 글자의 고증도 함께 고찰한다.
청(淸) 대의 실학파 고증학자들의 신랄한 비판과 함께 한대의 음양 우주 오행 론에 입각한 허신의 해설은 현대 과학에 비추어 본다면 미신적이고 견강부회한 해석이라고 생각되어지지만, 전통이란 수많은 시간의 인간의 삶 속에서 진실성을 가지고 내려오는 것이다. 그럼으로 오늘날까지 한국 나아가서 동아시아 한자문화권에서 민중의 삶 속에서 전통으로 내려오는 문화적 DNA 속에 간지자에 대한 해석은 아직 살아 있다고 보며 본 논문의 의의를 두고 있다.

영어초록

This thesis aims for the literal study of twelve earthly branches, which understood as a system of periodic, almanac and chronicle symbols in East Asia cultural band , where maintains its cultural basis on Chinese characters. The origin of these twelve Chinese characters has not investigated until now exactly. The number of ‘twelve’ is considered having two origins, one is from ancient Chinese original observation of astronomy -that is - the discovery of Jupiter and the great Dipper. And the other is the transmission of twelve signs of the zodiac from Babylonian civilization.
There were the another ancient names of twelve earthly branches, as same with ten heavenly stamps, which can not be known when the names were used and disappeared.
By the excavation of 甲骨文 of Yin Dynasty, which were carved on the armour and helmet of turtle and cattle's bone, we can find the sixty 甲子(ten heavenly stamps and twelve earthly branches) carved on the cattle's bone, perfectly as same as the characters being used nowadays. We can find that twelve characters, as well as ten characters, have the ordinal numeral sequence. and also they have the repeating circulations on their calendars.
And also this thesis studies on the shape and meaning of each twelve characters. we can find the historical progressing steps of the shape and form of characters. Such as, 甲骨文-金文-大篆-古文-小篆-今文.
In the Han Dynasty Xu Shen(許愼)’ Shuowenjiezi, in which, there are his spacial interpretation of twelve earthly branches on the basis of the inter-acting principles of Yin & Yang and five primary elements. He interpreted them by the changing depth of sun light and the plant-living process in a year. In Ching dynasty, The severe interpretation of the sixty cycle 甲子 were different from previous ancient Han Dynasty’s scholars who based their philosophy on Yin and Yang cosmic theory. The former criticized and denied the latter’s theory, which was unscientific and has no historical evidences. But this present author thinks that the latter’s interpretations of the sixty cycle 甲子 are still transmitted and maintained still now in our traditional cultural and concept. Therefore, they can not be denied and neglected wholly, because the tradition has the transmitted truth.
