청화백자 산수문(山水文)과 노론이 만든 영조(英祖) 신화 (Porcelains with Underglaze Cobalt-Blue Decoration of Landscapes and the Myth of King Yeongjo Created by the Noron (Old Doctrine) Faction)

초록

‘산수문(山水文)’ 청화백자는 18세기 이후에 성행한 것으로 추정되고 있다. 조선 전기의 청화백자나 17세기에 유행한 철화백자에서는 산수문을 확인하기 어렵기 때문이다. 그러나 산수문 청화백자가 언제부터, 어떤 주제로 제작되었는지에 대해서는 여전히 논란의 여지가 많은 상태다. 청화백자 산수문의 제작 시기와 관련해서 영조(英祖, 재위: 1724-1776)가 연잉군(延礽君) 시절에 손바닥만 한 유지(油紙)에 수묵으로 그린 화초(花草) 네 폭과 산수 두 폭을 번조소(燔造所)로 가는 종[胥隷]에게 보내며 작은 항아리[小壺]를 구워 오게 했다는 기록이 주목된다. 이 일화의 출처는 김시민(金時敏, 1681-1747)이 자신이 소장한 매화 한 폭이 결실된 영조의 다섯 폭 도자기 밑그림으로 만든 화첩(畫帖)에 1724년에 쓴 글이다. 이 글은 산수문 도자기가 숙종(肅宗, 재위: 1674-1720) 대부터 제작되었을 것이라고 생각하게도 한다.
김시민이 소장한 영조가 연잉군 시절에 그렸다는 도자기 밑그림은 영조의 진작이라는 증거는 없다. 영조의 진작이든, 혹은 그렇게 전해졌거나 미상의 그림을 영조의 그림이라고 주장한 것이든, 김시민은 난초, 국화, 매화라고 그 제재를 밝힌 화초 그림들과 달리 산수도 두 폭의 주제는 특정하지 않았다. 그 산수도들이 매우 작은 유지에 수묵으로 그려진 특징 없는 일반적인 산수도였기 때문일 것이다. 그런데 영조 대에 본격 유행한 청화백자 산수문의 주된 두 장면은 ‘동정추월(洞庭秋月)’과 ‘장한강동거(張翰江東去)’이다. 청화백자에 시문된 <동정추월도>는 전형적인 소상팔경도(瀟湘八景圖)의 한 장면이기보다는 악양루(岳陽樓)가 제재인 중국 시문(詩文)을 도해한 고사도 계통의 산수화라고 할 수 있다. 특히 정선(鄭歚, 1676-1759)은 악양루가 중심이 되는 이러한 동정호 그림을 토대로 청화백자 산수문에 그려진 것과 같은 곧은 깃대가 옆에 선 악양루가 화면 우측에 위치한 <동정추월도>를 그렸다. 현재 전하는 청화백자의 <동정추월도>는 김시민과 가까운 사이였던 정선이 그린 이러한 <동정추월도>와 가장 유사하다. 반면 동정추월도와 짝을 이루는 강안(江岸)에 선 두 인물이 대화를 나누는 장면은 그림의 주제를 특정하기 어렵다. 강안전별도(江岸餞別圖) 계통의 이 장면을 판단하는 근거는 그림과 함께 청화백자에 적힌 ‘장한강동거’로 시작되는 이백(李白, 701-762)의 「송장사인지강동(送張舍人之江東)」의 시구(詩句)이다.
이러한 점들을 토대로 이 논문은 영조 즉위 후 노론과 안동 김씨 가문의 상징적 인물인 김창협(金昌協, 1651-1708)에게 시호를 내리는 것을 논의한 날 경종의 희귀한 어필인 ‘장한강동거’ 구절이 노론의 핵심 인사들 사이에서 새롭게 환기되었을 맥락에 주목하였다. 김시민이 자신이 소장한 영조의 도자기 밑그림 산수도를 ‘장한강동거’와 관련시켰을 가능성이 있기 때문이다, 숙종 사후 노론의 핵심 인사들은 연잉군 시절의 영조가 부왕인 숙종의 자질을 이어 그림에 조예가 깊다는 신화를 만들어 냈다. 김시민의 어화첩 제발도 이러한 노론 핵심 인사들의 논조를 공유했다는 점에 이 논문은 주목하였다. 영조에 대한 신화가 새롭게 만들어지던 당시의 문화적 맥락에서 접근할 때, 청화백자 산수문의 주제 및 형식, 제작 시기 등에 대한 미술사적 이해도 깊어질 수 있을 것이다. 청화백자 산수문에 그려진 가을바람 부는 해질녘과 달밤의 운치 있는 광활한 수면 풍경은 당시 문사(文士)들 마음에 감흥을 일으키는 시적 정취가 넘치는 산수공간이기도 하였다. 이러한 갑번자기를 주문하고 향유할 수 있었던 18세기 전반 장동(壯洞)을 중심으로 한 문인들의 취향과 이들의 정치적, 문화적 맥락 속에서 청화백자 산수문도 재조명될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Porcelains with underglaze cobalt-blue decoration of landscapes are believed to have become popular after the 18th century. However, there is still a lot of controversy as to when porcelains with underglaze cobalt-blue decoration of landscapes began to be produced and on what topics. This paper focuses on the record that King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776), when he was a prince, drew two landscape paintings in ink on a very small piece of paper and then had his servant create a small jar for him. The source of this anecdote is a record written in 1724 by Kim Simin (1681-1747) in an album made from the five porcelain sketches of King Yeongjo that he owned.
There is no evidence that the sketches for making potteries that Kim Simin possessed were drawn by King Yeongjo during his time as Yeoninggun (Prince Yeoning). Whether they were the works of King Yeongjo, or whether they were passed down as such, or whether Kim Simin claimed that the anonymous sketches were painted by King Yeongjo himself. Kim did not specify the subject of the landscapes, unlike the flower paintings, part of the sketches for making potteries that were identified as orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum blossoms. This may be because the landscape drawings were typical, featureless landscape sketches drawn in ink on very small paper.
It has been understood that porcelains with underglaze cobalt-blue decoration of landscapes were mainly depicting the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers preferred by the elites of the Joseon dynasty. However, the main scenes shown in the porcelains with underglaze cobalt-blue decoration of landscapes are of “Autumn Moon over Lake Dongting” and “Zhang Han Leaving for Jiangdong” in theme. It is possible that the blue and white wares depicting landscapes began with these two scenes rather than the eight scenes. It is difficult to find any clues that contemporary appreciators particularly preferred the paintings of “Autumn Moon over Lake Dongting” among those of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers. In addition, designs on ceramics are thought to follow the pictorial trends of the time, but the scene of “Zhang Han Leaving for Jiangdong” is a theme of landscape painting that has not been seen in the works of painters since the reign of King Sukjong (r. 1674-1720). If the porcelains with underglaze cobalt-blue decoration of landscapes were not modeled after the landscape paintings prevalent at the time, how was the combination of these two themes achieved? In order to infer this point, this paper focused on the intention of the inscriptions written on the album leaves by Kim Simin of the Andong Kim clan after he created the album of King Yeongjo's sketches immediately after the ruler’s accession to the throne. When approached in the cultural context of the time when the myth about King Yeongjo was being newly created, extensive art historical interpretations of the subject matter, style, and the time of production of porcelains with underglaze cobalt-blue decoration of landscapes can be deepened.
