石坡 李昰應 墨蘭畵의 審美意識에 關한 硏究 (Study on Aesthetic Consciousness Presented in Seokpa Lee Ha-eung)

초록

본 연구는 조선시대 말기의 정치가이자 서화가로도 명성이 높았던 石坡 李昰應(1820-1898)의 墨蘭畵를 중심으로 작품 속에 내재된 審美意識을 알아보려는데 있다.
秋史 이후에 뛰어난 묵란화가들이 많이 나왔지만 그 중에서도 석파의 묵란은 필법에서 그리고 회화의 정신적인 측면에서 볼 때 秋史蘭에 비해 풍운의 정치가다운 파격적인 날카로움을 나타내고 있다. 또한 힘차고 빠르며 대담한 필치를 보여준다. 그러나 한편으로는 보수적인 선비로서의 기개가 은연 중 드러나고 있으며 그의 꼿꼿함이 그림 전체를 지배하고 있다. 이는 당시의 정세 속에서 희생되어 불운한 삶을 살아야 했던 왕손으로서의 지조와 자존심을 지키고자 함에서 온 것같다.
석파는 일생동안 單蘭畵, 群蘭畵, 叢蘭畵, 石蘭畵, 器皿怪石蘭圖 등을 제작했으며 이 중 石坡蘭의 전형은 石蘭畵에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 말년의 석란화에서는 잎이 길고 유려하며 三轉을 의식하지 않은 채 풍성한 蕙蘭으로 꽃과 잎 모두 다양한 변화와 독특함을 꾀하고 있다. 결국 그의 말년작에 비추어 볼 때 바위보다는 蘭에 귀결시킴으로써 蘭 속에 자신의 人品과 예술혼을 집결시켰다. 이러한 石坡蘭의 독창성은 단순한 기법의 연마가 아닌 유교 사상을 중심으로 禪的 요소, 隱逸的 성향을 아우르는 그의 審美意識에 기인한 것이다.
석파는 그의 蘭 속에 유가의 선비정신, 禪的 요소, 隱君子的 성향을 포함시켜 石坡蘭을 완성시키고 있다. 유가의 선비정신은 正道, 고전, 중용의 적당함, 군자의 절개를 나타내고 禪的 요소는 空으로 비움, 간결, 현실초월적인 성향을 표현하며 隱君子的 성향은 無爲로 집약되어 巧보다는 拙이, 美보다는 醜가 반영되어 표출된다. 그리하여 修己와 治人의 덕목을 강조하는 유가의 선비정신과 고차적인 정신 일치에 입각한 禪的 요소를 탈속·자오의 수단으로 이용하여 정신 해방을 주장하며 속세를 초월해 자연과 합일되어 살아가려는 隱君子的 성향은 그의 작품 속에 고스란히 스며들어 그의 蘭에 상징성을 더하고 있다. 또한 墨蘭畵가 문인화의 한 부류라고 볼 때 그 기법의 진수보다는 그 精神性이 창조적인 예술 창작에 영향을 준다는 데에 큰 의미가 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the aesthetic consciousness inherent in orchid paintings in black and white of Seokpa Lee Ha Eung who was well known a politician and painting and calligraphic artist in the end of the Joseon Dynasty era.
There have been a lot of artists who drew black and white orchid paintings since Chusa. The works of Seokpa, however, are featured with unconventional sharpness in technical and psychological aspects representing his rough political life compared with the works of Chusa. In addition, they show strong, fast and audacious strokes of the brush, while the spirit of a conservative scholar is revealed in secret and his uprightness is dominating the overall atmosphere of his works. It is likely that they have come from the efforts to keep his fidelity and self-esteem as a member of the royal family who had to endure hard times in the political situation at that time.
Seokpa created a wide range of artistic works covering paintings of single orchid, orchids in group, densely grouped orchids, coupling of orchids and rocks and coupling of orchids and rocks on a precious bowl among which the paintings of the coupling of orchids and rocks represent his orchid paintings. In particular, those created in his latter years portray long and elegant leaves and feature various changes and uniqueness in both flowers and leaves without being dependent on the Samjeon (三轉: a drawing style of rolling the brush three times). In view of the works created in his latter years, his attention is focused on orchids rather than rocks, concentrating his personality and artistic spirit on orchids. The creativity of his paintings of coupled orchids and rocks is based on his aesthetic consciousness encompassing Zen elements of Confucian ideas and reclusive tendency rather than the result of simply cultivating techniques.
Seokpa is completing the paintings of orchids and rocks by including the gentlemen’s virtue of Confucianism, Zen elements and the propensity of reclusive gentlemen. The gentlemen’s virtue of Confucianism represents the right path, classics, moderation and integrity of gentlemen, Zen elements indicate, emptiness, brevity and propensity to transcend the reality and lastly the propensity of reclusive gentlemen is concentrated on Muwi (無爲, wu-wei: being natural as they are) and is expressed by reflecting simplicity rather than ingenuity and ugliness than beauty. As a result, the propensity of reclusive gentlemen who wishes to transcend mundanity and live in harmony with nature is deeply ingrained in his works and even more is symbolized by orchids using the gentlemen’s spirit of Confucianism that emphasizes the virtue of self-cultivating and people-governing and Zen elements based on high-level spiritual unity as a method for unworldliness and self-enlightenment. Furthermore, given that orchid paintings in black and white is a type of literati’s painting, the meaning of his painting can be found in the fact that the spirituality rather than the essence of techniques affects creative artistic works.
