자동화 사회의 디지털기억과 기술적 무의식 - 윤이형과 테드 창의 과학소설을 중심으로 (Digital Memory and Technological Unconsciousness in an Automated Society)

초록

이 글에서는 윤이형의 「고스트」와 테드 창의 「사실적 진실, 감정적 진실」을 중심으로 자동화 사회의 기술적 무의식과 디지털기억기술이 개인 정체성 형성에 미치는 영향을 탐구하였다. 두 작품은 자동기억기술과 검색기술이 인간의 사고과정에 통합되는 사회를 상상함으로써 일상에 밀착된 기술이 개인과 공동체의 삶에 미치는 영향을 탐구하였다. 이들 작품에서 라이프로깅은 디지털 빅데이터의 소설적 장치로서 광범위하게 축적된 개인자료와 검색기술을 통해 언제든 과거의 자신을 소환, 재생하는 것을 가능하게 해주는 뉴미디어이다. 두 작품에서 과거와 현재를 왕래하는 인간의 분신은 ‘디지털유령’이다. 디지털유령은 디지털 미디어를 통해 언제든 개인이 필요할 때 소환되어 만능 해결사의 역할을 수행한다. 디지털시대의 인간이 갖는 기술적 무의식으로 개인은 디지털유령을 자신의 또 다른 자아로 자연스럽게 수용하기 때문이다. 「고스트」에는 기계기억을 통한 트라우마 치유라는 긍정적인 측면과 함께 기억데이터의 검색이 초래할 불안한 상황이 암시되어 있다. 「사실적 진실, 감정적 진실」은 구술사회와 자동기억기술이 상용화된 디지털영상사회를 병치, 제시함으로써 기억기술의 변화가 인간의 정체성과 인격형성에 미치는 영향을 섬세하게 살피고 있다. 이들 작품은 진화한 라이프로깅 기술이 인간에게 오직 외적으로 표현된 사실만을 진실로 확신하게 만들 수 있다는 것, 이것은 인간으로부터 데이터로 치환될 수 없는 불투명한 영역을 삭제하는 것으로서 인간을 데이터의 집합체로 간주하는 태도를 갖게 할 수 있음을 경고한다. 두 작품이 제기하는 문학적 질문은 기술가속의 산물인 방대한 데이터에 모든 것을 의지함으로써 현재를 상실해가는 현대인의 삶과, 인류의 미래가 오직 기술의 혁신과 가속에 있다는 현대과학의 믿음에 대해 다시 한 번 성찰할 수 있게 한다.

영어초록

This paper aims to explore the influence of technological unconsciousness and digital memory technology in an automated society on the formation of personal identity, focusing on I-hyung Yoon's "Ghost" and Ted Chiang's "The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling". The two works explore the impact of everyday technologies on the lives of individuals and communities by imagining a society in which automatic memory technology and search technology are integrated into human thought processes. In these works, lifelogging is a device of digital big data that enables people to summon and replay their past at any time through extensively accumulated personal data and search technology. In both works, the human alter ego that travels between the past and present is a ‘digital ghost.’ Digital ghost is summoned whenever an individual needs it through digital media and acts as an all-purpose problem solver. This is because, due to the technological unconsciousness of humans in the digital age, individuals naturally accept digital ghosts as their other selves. "Ghost" suggests that while there is a positive aspect to healing trauma through machine memory, the retrieval of memory data can also lead to unstable situations. “The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling” juxtaposes and presents an oral society with a digital image society where automatic memory technology is commercialized, delicately examining the impact of changes in memory technology on human identity and personality formation. These works warn that evolved lifelogging technology can make humans believe that only externally expressed facts are true, and that this can lead to an attitude of regarding humans as a collection of data by deleting the realm of the unconscious from humans. The literary questions raised by these two works allow us to reflect once again on the lives of modern people who are losing the present by relying on massive data, a product of technological acceleration, and on the belief of modern science that the future of humanity lies solely in technological innovation and acceleration.
