초록

Typical causative (forced causative) is making others move by someone and thereby making them do something. But in this paper, the writer discussed the meaning of the sentence of 「(さ)せる」where causing subject is inanimate subject. In the sentence with inanimate subject, the meaning of 「(さ)せる」indicates 「possibility」 「possible attribute」and 「methods」.
First, it is common aspect that subjective noun phrase indicates the meaning of inanimate object. In addition, inanimate object can neither “force” nor “allow”. Accordingly, in case of inanimate subject, good conditions are prepared well and “inanimate subject を さ せ る ~ ” is thought to be indicating the meaning of possibility. In other words, subjective noun phrases are statements that describe properties (characteristics) that are inherent in inanimate objects. They describe properties about inanimate noun phrases. And they are thought to have common aspects of “attribute noun phrases”.
Second, in the previous study related to causative sentences with inanimate subject, it is common to identify them as broad sense causal relationship. But in this paper, the writer analyzed that denotation of causal relationship is too comprehensive, and attribute noun phrases (attributes of inanimate subject) have the meaning of possibility. It is thought that in case of inanimate subject, there are many noun phrases where subjective noun phrases “describe attribute” and in such subjective noun phrases, predicate “(さ) せ る” also includes the meaning of “possibility”. Between “possible attribute” and “abstractly possible”, there are two attributes. The meaning of receiving grace is strong and it in not causal relationship caused by negative cause and more detailed classification is possible.
Third, it is thought that in causative sentences with inanimate subject, “さ せ る” also indicates the meaning of “methods”. That is, inanimate subject’s “(さ) せ る” is used as “methods”(means) to be intended to achieve for specific purpose. It is neither “possibility” nor “causal relationship”. Because denotation of causal relationship in previous studies is too broad, it can be understood as means of this inanimate subject. Therefore, it can be said to be indicating the meaning of “methods”.
