신종교로서 무종교(Nonreligion) -최근 서구 학계의 무종교 연구를 중심으로- (Nonreligion as a New Religion －Focusing on Recent Studies on Nonreligion in Western Academic Circles－)

초록

‘무종교(nonreligion)’는 특정한 종교적 믿음을 갖고 있지 않거나 특정 종교조직에 속하지 않는 인구군이나 관련 현상을 가리키는 보편적인 범주로 현재 학계에서 사용 되고 있다. 무종교인의 증가는 서구는 물론이고 전세계적으로 하나의 뚜렷한 종교적 /문화적/사회적 흐름으로 한국도 예외는 아니다. 최근(2021년) 한국갤럽 조사에 의 하면 무종교인의 비율(60%)이 ‘종교인’(39%)을 크게 넘어섰으며, 이러한 추세는 1995년부터 10년 주기로 실시되고 있는 통계청의 인구주택총조사에서 2015년 처음으 로 무종교 인구가 총인구의 절반을 넘는 56.1% - 종교인구 43.9% - 를 기록하면서 이미 예측된 것이라 할 수 있다. 이렇듯 한국의 무종교 상황은 서구 특히 유럽에 견 줄 만큼 빠른 속도로 심화하고 있으나, 관련 주제에 대한 한국 학계의 관심은 제한 적이며 이마저 한국종교사회학회에서 관련 논의와 조사연구를 선점하고 있다. 따라 서 본 논문은 한국의 종교학계 특히 신종교 연구가 동시대의 특징적인 종교문화 현 상인 ‘무종교’를 새로운 연구영역으로 수용하여 신종교 연구가 그 폭을 넓히고 시의 성을 획득하여 더욱 활성화되기를 바라는 필자의 기대를 담고 있다. 본 논문에서는 우선 ‘무종교’가 서구의 종교사회학에서 근래에 높은 관심을 받으며 중요한 하위 연구 분야로 급성장한 배경을 지식사회학적 시각 – 사회환경적 조건, 학문적 인프라 구축과 ‘패러다임의 전환’ 등 – 에서 살펴보았다. 이어서 서구 학계 무종교 연구의 최근 동향을 파악하기 위해 2021년 여름에 열린 ‘국제종교사회학회 (ISSR)’와 ‘무종교와 세속성 연구 네크워크(NSRN)’의 국제학술대회의 관련 세션과 발표내용을 바탕으로 일련의 중요 연구 주제를 제시하였다. 끝으로는 일련의 서구 학자가 ‘무종교’를 신종교에 비유하여 설명하고 있음에 주목하여 이 두 현상 또는 이 두 연구 분야가 가지고 있는 밀접한 상관성을 강조하였다.

영어초록

‘Nonreligion’ is a broad term to refer to the population or related phenomenon that does not have a specific religious belief or does not belong to a certain religious organization. The increase in non-religious people is a distinct religious/cultural/social trend these days across the world, and South Korea is no exception. According to a recent (2021) survey of Gallup Korea, the proportion of non-religious people (60%) got far ahead of religious people (39%) of the population. This trend is to be predicted already in the 2015 Census conducted by the Korea National Statistical Office, when the non-religious population accounted for more than half (56.1%) of the total population for the first time. As seen above, the increase in non-religious people in South Korea is gaining speed, quite comparable to the European situation. But the interest of Korean academics on ‘nonreligion’ is rather limited, and even related debate and research are preoccupied with members of the Korean Association for the Sociology of Religion. Therefore, this paper is motivated by the expectation that studies on new religions will be revitalized by integrating ‘nonreligion’ in the research area, a distinguishing religious trend of the contemporary era. This new step could markedly broaden the scope of the research area of studies on new religions, not to mention acquiring timely relevance. Firstly, this paper examined how ‘nonreligion’ has received, somewhat recently, much attention from sociologists of religion in the West and has rapidly grown into an important sub-research field, from a perspective of the sociology of knowledge. Secondly, to get an overview of the latest research trends in studies on nonreligion in Western academic circles, two international conferences of International Society for the Sociology of Religion (ISSR) and Religious and Secular Research Network (NSRN) were chosen as case studies. A series of sessions and presentations of these conferences in 2021 are selected and reviewed by the degree of connectedness to the subject ‘nonreligion’. As a result, some significant research subjects on ‘nonreligion’ were presented and commented on briefly. Finally, based on the writings of several Western scholars, the close correlation between ‘nonreligion’ and new religions was underlined.
