A study on choreographic characteristics of Sin-jeontongmu: through examining Sook-ja Kim’s Naerimsaeyeo

Sin-jeontongmu (Neo-traditional dance) as a subdivision of Hanguk Changjak-muyong (Korean Creative Dance), has been used as a for more than one decade. This term refers to a particular dance style combined with something variated from the traditional dances. In this sense, this study discusses special qualities sand characteristics of movements, which could be regarded as particularities of Sin-jeontongmu, through examining “Naerimsaeyeo”. This dance is one of the representative examples of Sin-jeontongmu choreographed by Sook-ja Kim. This study employs two research methods. One is oral history interview with the choreographer, Sook-ja Kim, to listen to the internal voice for a choreographic concept and intention for Naerimsaeyeo, a successful re-creation of Seung-mu. The other is Laban/ Bartenieff Movement Analysis to examine the movement qualities to discuss what elements are continued and transformed from the traditional. The discussion about the examined particular characteristics can be summarized as the follows. Naerimsaeyeo most importantly conveys inner emotion and spirituality of the traditional Seung-mu, which is Han in this dance. Yet, the spirituality is presented in different ways of expressing the emotion, such as an emphasis on a contrasting quality and concurrently placing oppositional characteristics. Also, the fundamentals of the Seung-mu movements are continuously carried on in both ways; one in an original shape and quality as well as the other in a re-created variation of the traditional one. That is to say, the original and the re-created version share some commonality. And other artistic compositional elements such as structural changes, qualitative variations, proscenium stage usages, modernized costumes, western theatrical settings and light effects, are synthetically combined and cooperated for creating something new but still familiar. In this sense, Sin-jeontongmu, as the word itself implies, signifies a contemporary neo-classical fusion (hybrid) with a harmony of the traditional and modern, old and new, and original and transformed.
