한반도 중서부 지방 주거지와 지석묘의 공간분석에 대한 시론 - 환경요인(environmental elements) 분석을 중심으로 - (A spatial analysis of settlements and monuments in the midwestern region of the Korean peninsula with a focus on environmental elements)

초록

기존 청동기시대의 지석묘에 대한 연구를 살펴보면, 지석묘 자체에 대한 연구는 많은성과를 이루었으나, 주거지와의 관계에서 종합적으로 분석될 수 있는 기회가 상대적으로적었다고 보여진다. 그러나 1990년대 이후 대규모 발굴의 증가와 발굴자료의 축적으로인해, 청동기 시대를 종합적· 통시적으로 살펴볼 수 있는 기회가 주어졌다고 사료된다.
이에 지금까지 축적된 한반도 중서부 지역의 지석묘와 주거지 자료를 중심으로 청동기시대인들의 삶과 죽음에 대해서 유추·고찰해보고자 한다.
본고는 이러한 분석을 하기 위한 첫 번째 시도로써, 한반도 중서부(서울·인천·경기도)지역의 주거지 유적와 지석묘 유적의 위치에 남겨진 정보를, 지리정보시스템(GIS)을이용한 공간분석을 통하여 고찰해 보고자 한다. 본고에서는 지면관계상 자연환경적 요소(environmental elements:토양 분석(pedology)·수리 분석(hydrology)·지형 분석(topography: 경사 방향(Aspect), 경사도(Slope) 및 고도(Elevation) 분석))에 대한 분석만을 다루었다.
자연환경 요인에 대한 분석 결과, 생계경제방식의 변화, 특히 농경의 전개가 청동기시대인들의 주거와 매장지의 위치 선정에 큰 영향을 미쳤음을 알 수 있었다. 즉, 벼농사와밭농사에 적합한 토지조건을 가진 지역에 주거지와 지석묘가 자리하고 있었다. 대체로유적들이 지류로부터 적당한 거리를 유지하며, 배산임수 지역에 위치하고 있다. 청동기시대인들이 그들이 처한 자연 경관과 환경적 특징들에 적응하는 과정에서, 이론화되기 이전의 풍수의 개념이 이미 청동기시대 한반도 거주민들의 의식 속에 자리하게 되었을 가능성을 배제하기 어려웠다

영어초록

This study sets out to examine the spatial relationships between settlements and monuments (dolmens) of the Bronze Age (c. 1500~400 BC) in the midwestern region of the Korean peninsula, mainly Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi province. A change in the subsistence economy might have prompted an alteration of a landscape by people in order to create new settings for agriculture. The traces of this remolding can be read based on the distribution of settlements and monuments and the patterns they form. In order to look at what elements affect the positioning of the settlements and monuments in the environment during the Bronze Age, several questions have been raised as the following: 1. How near were the most fertile soils for rice and upland agriculture to the settlements and monuments? 2. How did their positions change through time? 3. What were the relationships between monuments and settlements and water? 4. What were their topographical features in terms of aspect, slope, and elevation of the settlements and monuments? In this article, the focus is on the analysis and results concerning the relationships between settlements/monuments and natural features including soil types and distance from water sources as well as aspect,slope, and elevation. As a result, the location of settlements and monuments across appropriate soils for rice and upland crops seems to reflect the trends of the Bronze Age subsistence economy. The analyses of the distance from water to the sites of the dead have found that they tend to be located in closer proximity to water sources than the sites of the living. Together with these outcomes, the results of the topographical analyses have reminded me of the ideal topography of Baesanimsu (背山臨水), which means ‘to be situated to face a river with one’s back against a hill'. Even though a cautious approach is required it may be possible to claim that Pungsu (風水) can be considered as one of the latent concepts on the Korean peninsula dating from the Bronze Age.
